NFL 2015 Season (1 Viewer)

I'm going to get my prediction out there early for those relying on it to place their bets::wink2:

Carolina 38
Denver 17

A return to the ugly Super Bowl blowouts of yesteryear. Be prepared to check out the bizarre alternative programming other TV stations offer during the SB by the mid-third quarter. Denver's D might keep hope alive until halftime but then they fold down the stretch and this becomes a blowout.

I concur...
sounds about right to me...
I can see Denver's great defense...
but lack of offense...
struggling to keep field position all day...
losing field position on punts almost every series...
I think Newton will pick his spots and gradually pull ahead to a lopsided victory...
much as I admire Manning...
I think the Broncos are over matched on both sides of the ball...
maybe not so much on defense...
but I think Peyton will be scrambling and taking sacks all day...

Denver's only hope is to apply enough pressure on Newton to force turnovers...

The Browns have indicated that they intend to release Manziel in March.

Perhaps this will wake him up to the opportunity he's throwing away.

Question for Louis; so today on the drive time sports talk radio show, the hosts interviewed Mike "Mad Dog" Russo as they are broadcasting from radio row in San Francisco. Mike said Belichick left New York because George Young hated Bill, Bill knew it and he knew he was never going to get the head coaching job.

After Parcells left, the Giants hired Ray Hanley instead, Belichick was hired as the coach of the Browns, then he followed Parcells to the New England, then the Jets, then Bill left the Jets and was hired by New England.

Wow.

So the Giants could have had Belichick, but hired Ray Hanley instead........................Louis, what gives here, why did Young hate Belichick?

In the two part "A football life" about Belichick, he fondly waxed on and on about the Giants, how he loved coaching there, I don't think he ever wanted to leave there.

I don't get it...................

This game, like many Super Bowls before it, will be decided early; as a viewer, you'll know pretty quickly who's going to win this one.

Two best examples for me are the 2002 Super Bowl, Patriots vs Rams and the 2008 Super Bowl, Patriots vs Giants; I knew in both instances about midway through the first quarter who was going to win both of those games.

If Carolina comes out and moves the ball, scores a few times and Denver comes out and goes three and out a few times, or worse yet, turns the ball over which leads to more Carolina points, then it will end up 103-0 Carolina.

If Carolina comes out tight, can't move the ball and/or commits a turnover or two and Denver scores off of them and Manning has the game of his life, then once again this year, Denver will pull a game out of their collective rear ends for a win.

Then the floor tile with confetti and ketchup sprinkled on it pizza peddler will ride off into the sunset with yet another Super Bowl win and heads will explode across New England.................

I know that Young didn't like Belichick, because Young wanted complete control over personnel decisions, and Belichick, like Parcells, wanted to control these decisions himself. However, that is not the only reason the Giants lost Belichick. Parcells knew how good a coach Belichick was, and got Belichick the Browns job before he announced he was retiring, leaving the Giants to hire Ray Handley, who had been the running back coach, not even one of the coordinators. I may be an odd Giants fan, but I always thought that Belichick was the reason the Giants won in 86 and 90, not Parcells. Without Belichick, Parcells has never won a title. Belichick has 2 with Parcells, four more without him.

I can almost forgive George Young for losing Belichick (the second of the only two bad decisions he made as the Giants GM), but I can't forgive him for his rookie mistake in 1979: wasting the 7th pick in the draft on Phil Simms, Moorehead State, instead of drafting Joe Montana, who just won the National Championship with Notre Dame in one of the greatest comebacks in college history in the Cotton Bowl, because of rumors that Bill Walsh wanted to draft him in the third round. Simms could have been had with the Giants third-round pick, and while he was an adequate journeyman type quarterback, who had one great season (1986), and one truly great game (Super Bowl XXI), if the Giants had Joe Montana (or Eli Manning, for that matter), with that perennially great defense, offensive line, running game, and Mark Bavaro at tight end (the Gronkowski of his day), they would have won at least 4 titles. Simms, playing behind those terrific offensive lines, with those great running games (Joe Morris, O.J. Anderson), still managed to be the most sacked quarterback in NFL history (because he held the ball forever and wouldn't throw it away), only averaged 204 passing yards per game, and nearly threw as many interceptions (157) as he did touchdowns (199). I booed him when they drafted him, and, frankly, believe they never would have won in 2000 if he hadn't gotten hurt. The fact that they won Super Bowl XXV with Jeff Hostetler speaks volumes.

George you and I both know how this story is going to written, I don't care if Carolina has scored 1,000 points in the playoffs so far, or the Panther defense is playing yada, yada... this is going a close ball game that will come down to a Manning led late 4th quarter drive for a TD, FG to win it and send the ol man riding into the sunset with his Superbowl trophy, so it is written and so it shall be...Sammy

Hard to argue with you on this one Sammy; statistically, Manning is ALL TIME in the 50 year history of the Super Bowl THE WORST QB to ever make it.

He's also the oldest.

Which can only mean one thing; a crushing late game PIC 6 thrown by the old man for old times sake to lose the game......................:wink2:

I just can't see the Broncos winning with their offense. Yes their defense is great but the offense might put up 10 points or less in which case the defense would pretty much have to hold the Panthers well under their 31 points per game season average.

I hope you are right, because I will be pulling for Manning to have a good game and win, but I expect things to play out the way George sees it.

I read a story in the Times this past weekend that during 2015, concussions were up 58% from 2014. The increase could be partially due to players reporting incidents more and realizing that it doesn't make sense to suck it up when you may have a concussion. In addition, I don't know if you saw it but a former 27 year old player for the Giants who passed away was found to have CTE. 27 years old. Very sad.

with all the advancements in medical technology...I'm sure more actual permanent damage is now diagnosed or discovered...

in the lifetime of a football player...the big hits probably start in high school...then bigger hits in college...the slobberknockers in pro football...

a lifetime of whacks to the head take their toll...

I wonder if their are any studies on the most dangerous position to incur brain damage...

QB...wide receiver...running back...gotta be an offensive position...

I don't begrudge any player that rapes an organization of a big money contract and then retires early...

better than getting raped yourself...

I think the word "rape" is not the right word here; rape is violence by one human being against the other.

Players are just getting the best deal they can because careers are short and they're putting their bodies on the line. I don't have an issue with that. Get what you can while you can.

Here is a good interview with old Vikings coach Bud Grant. The part about concussions is interesting. He's a hardy 88 years old and said he had several concussions playing football. He says he was even knocked unconscious once. He has no problems at 88 years old. There are a lot of old players that don't have problems. Why is that never talked about? Is everything about CTE really understood?
The NFL has gotten so big and I think the media would love to tear it down. Now it's a feeding frenzy with these stories.
The best thing the NFL can do is teach proper tackling form using the shoulder with head to the side. Show them old film of Jack Ham tackling. If you use your head to spear someone, throw them out.

In following the NFL concussion issue I am still amazed at how some of the players react to head injuries. Many of them avoid team doctors or staff in order to not have to go through league mandated concussion protocols after games with some going as far as not speaking during films sessions etc. One player said it was not even about the money or playing time, rather it was the pressure from teammates to not be seen as soft.

It is more than a medical issue it is also about the culture in the NFL.

Man this nails it; proper tackling form, shoulder into the waist/lower body, head to the side, none of this headhunting crap, spearing, tackling around the shoulders and whiffing, getting stiff armed.

It's a lost art.
