Question for Louis; so today on the drive time sports talk radio show, the hosts interviewed Mike "Mad Dog" Russo as they are broadcasting from radio row in San Francisco. Mike said Belichick left New York because George Young hated Bill, Bill knew it and he knew he was never going to get the head coaching job.
After Parcells left, the Giants hired Ray Hanley instead, Belichick was hired as the coach of the Browns, then he followed Parcells to the New England, then the Jets, then Bill left the Jets and was hired by New England.
Wow.
So the Giants could have had Belichick, but hired Ray Hanley instead........................Louis, what gives here, why did Young hate Belichick?
In the two part "A football life" about Belichick, he fondly waxed on and on about the Giants, how he loved coaching there, I don't think he ever wanted to leave there.
I don't get it...................
I know that Young didn't like Belichick, because Young wanted complete control over personnel decisions, and Belichick, like Parcells, wanted to control these decisions himself. However, that is not the only reason the Giants lost Belichick. Parcells knew how good a coach Belichick was, and got Belichick the Browns job before he announced he was retiring, leaving the Giants to hire Ray Handley, who had been the running back coach, not even one of the coordinators. I may be an odd Giants fan, but I always thought that Belichick was the reason the Giants won in 86 and 90, not Parcells. Without Belichick, Parcells has never won a title. Belichick has 2 with Parcells, four more without him.
I can almost forgive George Young for losing Belichick (the second of the only two bad decisions he made as the Giants GM), but I can't forgive him for his rookie mistake in 1979: wasting the 7th pick in the draft on Phil Simms, Moorehead State, instead of drafting Joe Montana, who just won the National Championship with Notre Dame in one of the greatest comebacks in college history in the Cotton Bowl, because of rumors that Bill Walsh wanted to draft him in the third round. Simms could have been had with the Giants third-round pick, and while he was an adequate journeyman type quarterback, who had one great season (1986), and one truly great game (Super Bowl XXI), if the Giants had Joe Montana (or Eli Manning, for that matter), with that perennially great defense, offensive line, running game, and Mark Bavaro at tight end (the Gronkowski of his day), they would have won at least 4 titles. Simms, playing behind those terrific offensive lines, with those great running games (Joe Morris, O.J. Anderson), still managed to be the most sacked quarterback in NFL history (because he held the ball forever and wouldn't throw it away), only averaged 204 passing yards per game, and nearly threw as many interceptions (157) as he did touchdowns (199). I booed him when they drafted him, and, frankly, believe they never would have won in 2000 if he hadn't gotten hurt. The fact that they won Super Bowl XXV with Jeff Hostetler speaks volumes.
