NFL 2015 Season (3 Viewers)

I don't think enough is known about concussions and certainly CTE because a person's brain can't be examined until after they're dead.

As far as these things not happening years ago, I don't think we can say that because cases were probably not reported nor, in all likelihood, the linkage made between dementia and playing football.

Man this nails it; proper tackling form, shoulder into the waist/lower body, head to the side, none of this headhunting crap, spearing, tackling around the shoulders and whiffing, getting stiff armed.

It's a lost art.

The problem is that the helmet and shoulder pads are used as a weapon to injure the opponent rather than a shield to protect players from accidental injuries. Requiring proper form tackles, reinstituting old school tackle drills in practice (which were eliminated by the CBA), and ejecting any player who spears would go a long way towards eliminating the concussion problem.

The best thing the NFL could do if they were truly interested in player safety is reduce the number of games. They used to play a 14 game season. Now it is 16 with a ridiculous number of preseason games. One preseason game is one too many. That would involve a loss of money for owners and potentially players though so it will never happen. Instead they will make up more silly penalties that are subjectively enforced during the game but have little impact.

At the last CBA negotiations, the NFL wanted to increase the season to 18 games plus 4 exhibition games, which the Union absolutely refused to consider; the NFL gave up on the idea. The number of games will never be subtracted. What is more likely to happen is to increase the decrease the number of exhibition games to 2 and increase the regular season to 18.

If they go to 18 games, no QB will make it through the season unhurt which will end in April. That is ridiculous greed. How much money do the owners need in a sport that already makes billions? If I were the owner of a team like the Pats, I would be more concerned with getting Brady through healthy to the playoffs than making a few extra bucks with another regular season home game. But I guess that is why I'm not a billionaire. Those guys are ruthless for money.

The biggest rip off in sports is season tickets for NFL football; they jam you for the two home preseason games, ie, force you as a season ticket holder to pay for those games AT FULL PRICE. We had our season tickets for the Patriots for ten years, there were six of us.

Not a single one of us ever stepped foot inside the stadium for a preseason game; we'd give them to friends to take their kids to the game or anyone else who wanted to go.

A friend of mine has season tickets now; 275.00 a seat, him and his brother. They spend 1,100.00 a year on tickets for games they never go to.

Not fair at all, but the owners could care less.

How much money do they need? Apparently, more, much more.

In the NY Times Magazine article that I provided a link to, Why Haven't Concussions Hurt the NFL, the author indicates that the NFL's total revenue in 2015 was $12.4 billion, almost double that of a decade ago, and that Goodell wants to achieve $25 billion in gross revenue by 2027.

By the way, it's a good article.

Anyway, back to the game; there has been zero buzz, as in nothing up to this game.

Zip, nada, zilch.

The last time I remember a lead up to the Super Bowl that was this bland was Steelers/Seahawks back in 2005.

And that game lived up to the lack of buzz, one of the worst Super Bowls ever.

Just awful; the Roethlisburger TD call where his helmet, nevermind the ball, didn't cross the goal line was as pathetic as it gets.

Cam Newton looked bored to death during one of the media sessions; he had this look on his face like he wanted to be anywhere but there.

This is not looking good.............

that's true...

the Super Bowl hype has really been lacking this year...

even on the NFL channel to some degree...

Newton...

announced yesterday...

he is shunning the press because they don't understand him...

if this is true...

I think this just sealed it for Johnny Football...

please God Jerry...

don't pick him up...

"Police report detailing Johnny Manziel incident released"

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...-struck-ex-girlfriend-according-police-report

Now remember Texas A&M suspended him for one half against some cupcake team for signing autographs for cash. And the NCAA could find no evidence he accepted cash even though they had pictures of him holding a fistful at the event. I wouldn't blame just this this numb skull but all the coaches, fans, parents etc who were supposed to hold him responsible for his actions and didn't because he made them money playing football.

well...
the end result is that he is what he is...
and he has to accept where the cards fall...
nobody else...

now Jerry Jones was fascinated with him before the draft and all of these "incidents"...

and there is a petition going around Dallas to pick up Johnny Manzel for the Cowboys...

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/01/dallas-cowboys-fans-johnny-manziel-petition

just a smattering of signatures...
but still some people are signing the petition...

and this is my biggest fear...
him coming to Dallas...

I don't want him anywhere near the Cowboy's organization...

as far as I'm concerned...
and I do believe in second chances...
JM has crashed and burned a half dozen times already...
he has used up his second chance a long time ago...

I'm hoping they draft Carson Wentz...

It's amazing to me how many of these all world college QB's are either a flash in the pan or completely wash out of the NFL.

Manzel, RG III, Vince Young, Kapernick, Sam Bradford, Mariotta, Winston, EJ Manuel, on and on it goes............just train wrecks in the NFL. For that matter, how many good QB's are there in the NFL period, there are more stiffs than legit QB's in the NFL..........

yea...true...but very few have crashed and burned like Johnny Football...he sets the standard...he's raised the bar high...he holds the record for screw-ups...it's just one screw up after another...a complete train wreck...everything that could go wrong for him has gone wrong for him...he's old enough to know better...he's just not a very responsible young man...I question his commitment...you have to put the blame on him...I don't blame anyone but him...my sister used to give her kids "time outs"...that's what he needs...

Well, lets count the top ten (for the 2015 season, not career, career greats like Peyton Manning and Phillip Rivers have fallen out of the top ten, and Tony Romo was knocked out this season by injury):

1. Tom Brady (arguably the greatest of all time, 2 missed extra points away from his second straight Super Bowl, still getting it done better than anyone)
2. Cam Newton (this year's MVP, 17-1 record, combined 40+ touchdowns rushing and passing)
3. Aaron Rogers (maybe the best pure pocket passer after Brady)
4. Eli Manning (best year of his career, 35 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, did it without a defense or a running game)
5. Ben Roethlisberger (still getting the job done with less around him)
6. Drew Brees (32 touchdowns, only 11 interceptions, but still only really gets it done in that dome)
7. Russell Wilson (**** near made it to his third straight Super Bowl, 2nd best of the running QB's)
8. Matt Ryan (the only QB to beat Cam Newton this season)
9. Kirk Cousins (break out season, 25 touchdowns, only 11 interceptions)
10. Carson Palmer (35 touchdowns, only 11 interceptions, but still a total choke artist in the playoffs)

I'll have to disagree with Mariotta. He will be going into his second year. Too soon to write him off.

RG III isn't a train wreck; he's just brittle. He will need to change the way he plays, if possible, probably for another team.

That's a pretty good list. Brady is something else, 38 years old and still playing at a very high level, pretty amazing. They need to find a running game to take the pressure off of him. Not sure about Russell Wilson, he makes some boneheaded decisions in the passing game, we'll see what he does without Lynch. I'd love to see Lynch on the Patriots, it would be Corey Dillon part II.

I think you need to shoehorn Luck in there somewhere, he was hurt most of the year, but he's a very good QB, maybe swap him out for Matt Ryan to keep it a top ten................

Staying healthy is a key for great QBs. Brady never seems to get hurt. Guys like RGIII, Bradford and many upstarts are constantly injured. I don't know how to explain it but the great ones stay healthy and the busts don't. Maybe it is luck. Maybe it is the system. Whatever it is you have to avoid injuries. Carson Palmer was on his way to many SB before he got injured. It's a miracle he is still around and playing as well as he does given his prior injuries. Very few QBs could have fought through those to play at his level. But he will never be considered a great QB because of his health limitations.
