NFL Season 2016-17 (1 Viewer)

Mike:

I thought he was not fined? Last night he pledged $12,000 to the salvation army, but since he was not fined he increased that donation to $21,000 today.

I guess it is different to me because something good came from it.

-Jason

I agree with Jason on this one. I, like Mike, am old school and hate showboating. Indeed, I am constantly talking to my son about being a good winner, and not trash talking or showing up his opponents, and the conduct of NFL players undermines my "they shouldn't be able to tell if you won or lost" after the game message. That being said, like technical fouls in basketball it allows player's harmless stupidity to adversely effect the outcome of a game. I am all for limiting the ref's ability to effect the outcome of a game as much as possible, so I would take the penalty out of the game, and let players who do something outrageous in show boating get fined, or let the players police themselves: you don't like someone showboating? Keep him out of the end zone, and knock him on his butt with a good clean hit later in the game.

Jason/Louis...

everybody is entitled to like what they want…
the excessive celebration is one of my pet peeves…
always has been…
I hate it…

I like a boxer that knocks out his opponent and then walks to his corner…
not the guy that does back flips…

I like the guy that scores a TD…
hands the ball to the ref and acts like it’s not his first rodeo…

Hit your home run…
drop your bat…
round the bases…
get your high fives…
go sit in the dugout…

I’m not splitting hairs here…
not playing favorites…
this is my own team that I’m complaining about…

you’re right…
the fine was waved…
and Elliott did make a substantial donation…

both Odell Beckham and Le’Veon Bell are a little incensed...
and have gone public asking why he got a free pass from the NFL on the fine…

I don’t think I made my post clear…

it’s not about the money to me…
that was never a point I was trying to make…
the guys that do this consistently make big bucks…
they can afford it…

It’s about the team…
how do you make up the 15 yard penalty to your team?

I can’t cite a specific example off hand…
but I have seen on numerous occasions…

and I know you have too…

where a late in the game…
the take the lead touch down…
with an excessive celebration penalty…
followed with a 15 yard farther kickoff…
has allowed the receiving team better field position…
now with just seconds left on the clock…
the celebration penalty of 15 yards…
has cost the team…
and they get beat by a last second field goal…

it's not the money…
it never was about the money...
it’s just a blatant disregard for your team…

this “all about me stuff” costs the team…
it’s just stupid…

I totally agree with your hatred of showboating, Michael. I hate OBJ's antics. My favorite all time player when it came to touchdowns was Barry Sanders. He ran to the referee, quietly handed him the ball, then returned to the sidelines, like he'd done it before, and expected to do it again.

exactly what I'm talking about...

it was never all about him and he probably never cost his team 15 yards in a celebration penalty...

to me that's class and sportsmanship...

love it!

Today I tuned in to Boston sports talk radio for the first time in nearly a month; the topic today was "As a Patriots fan, what team gives you the most concern if you had to play them in the playoffs/Super Bowl?"............................The first ten callers said "Giants, Giants, Giants, Cowboys, Giants, Giants, Steelers, Giants, Seattle, Giants"...............................:rolleyes2:.

I had enough and switched back to Christmas songs to get my blood pressure back to 120/80.

I've said this before, but if they somehow worm their way into another Super Bowl appearance vs the Patriots......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................and............................................................................................................................................................................................................................win to complete the hat trick,..........................................................................................................................................................that would be it for me; finished, done, el finito with the NFL.

hehehe...they gave Dak and the receiving core fits...hope I don't have to play them again...

The way it's shaping up Mike, its Dallas/Seattle/Detroit/Atlanta/Giants/Whoever.................so the Giants go on the road and play/beat Atlanta.

If Detroit beats whoever, you get the Giants, if whoever beats the Lions, the Giants go to Seattle.

Yeah, good luck with that one.

I'd rather see the Giants go to Seattle, but we'll see, things are still up in the air.

The way to beat the Giants is sit in a 2 deep zone shell and keep their one offensive threat in front of you. You don't have to worry about seam routes as they have no viable tight end and their running game is an absolute joke. The corpse of Victor Cruz isn't going to beat you.

I'm convinced winning in the NFL is one part talent, one part pure luck; take that Lions game last week. Detroit is about to punch it in when they fumble inside the five; it's lucky enough the Giants recovered, but then they recovered in the end zone, touchback, first and ten from the twenty. If they had recovered at the two, you force a three and out and they punt and you're in business, but nope the Giants recover the ball in the end zone.

One part talent, one part luck.

Guys,

The Giants haven't even clinched a spot yet, so I wouldn't worry about who they end up playing. Whoever wins the Super Bowl is going to have to beat the best teams, with or without home field. In the AFC, I think the Patriots, Steelers, Chiefs and Raiders all have a shot. In the NFC, its even more wide open, anybody who makes the field could go on a run and make it to the big dance. It wouldn't shock me if the Cowboys won, even with a rookie QB and sometimes suspect defense, or if the last team to clinch an NFC wildcard berth went to the Super Bowl. P-A-R-I-T-Y. The league wanted it, and now they've got it. Even though it has twice benefited the Giants, I think I prefer the pre-cap era, when every season there were one or two superior teams who met in the Super Bowl with at least 13 or 14 regular season wins. The only team today that still gets it done year in and year out is George's Patriots, and that is both a testament to Brady and Belichik, and an indictment of the AFC East, the other teams in which simply have not legitimately challenged the Patriots supremacy in 15+ years. The fortunes of every other division in football have gone up and down, but in the AFC East it is pretty much always over by week 10, with the Patriots dominating, no matter who (other than Brady) gets injured, and what supporting cast Belichik assembles. Amazing in the era of free agency and cap-enforced parity.

George seems to have forgotten the Packers in the NFC. They are surging and could still win their division. They have a winnable game against the Vikings while the Lions have a difficult one against the Cowboys. If the expected results bear out, they would play the Lions for the title in the last game of the regular season.

Yeah, I have as they've stunk most of the year, but sure, throw their hat in the ring, it's not about being good, it's about being good at the right time as Louis nailed it, anyone who gets in has a shot thanks to the league being so watered down.

And he's also right about the Patriots; in todays watered down salary cap era, they have had an incredible run the past 16 years. 16 strait winning seasons, fewest amount of wins in any year in this run was 9, 14 division titles including 8 strait, 10 AFCCG's including 5 strait, 6 trips to the Super Bowl, 4 wins.

Outside of the Celtics run in the 1960's, I've never seen anything like this, I doubt I'll ever see anything like it again. All done with 1 coach and 1 QB.

And IMO, Brady is the greatest QB in the history of the NFL, he's THIRTY NINE YEARS OLD and is still playing at a pro bowl level.

Incredible and I can say that as a Patriots fan since 1968, I've seen some God awful teams in that time, so this is pretty special.

Enjoy it because it because by the time another QB like him wears Patriot colors, you'll probably be taking a dirt nap. 40 years and counting Jets fans are still waiting for that special QB.

I plan on living until I'm 110 so I think there's a pretty good shot they'll come up with another good one over the next 55 years or so.

Besides, I think the back up they have now is the next one in line for the throne anyway, if he hadn't gotten hurt vs Miami, they would have gone 4-0 without Brady...................just unreal, whatever other teams (or the league) throw at them, they just keep rolling along.

And like I said, I witnessed a lot of bad football from 1968-1975, 1979-1984, 1987-1995, 1998-2000, so good things come to those who wait.

I'm not some pink hat wearing yahoo who came along as a fan in 2001.

My most favorite of NFL times were in the mid 70's to early 80's for the AFC East, my beloved Colts of Baltimore, the Dolphins, Pats, Jets, and back then the lowly Bills always battled it out for the East title, I don't seem to recall that there was a powerhouse that won out easily year in and year out, it seemed to change almost every year who won the East, some great games that I do recall with a many a great player on all of those teams.

The Ravens and Steelers should be a great game on Christmas Day. It is always a slug-fest and with huge playoff implications it should be even more intense than usual.

I am not taking sides as I consider Sammy and Tom to be good friends. May the best team win.

We don't need to take sides. The commentary from each of them should be hilarious.

George,

Now wait a minute...the greatest QB in the history of the NFL? What about Elway, Plunkett, Staubach...heck Manning and those types of guys. Don't get me wrong Tom Brady is a super star, but "The Greatest"...up for debate.

John from Texas

If you want to talk Johnny U and Montana, I'm fine with that but Elway and Plunkett don't belong in that conversation. Manning was a great regular season QB but a terrible playoff performer. Brady is both a great regular season and playoff QB. Staubach is just slightly below the likes of Montana and Brady.

I saw an article that compared Brady's stats to Montana's and it's shocking how far ahead in almost every catagory Brady is vs Montana.

Joe was 4-0 in the Super Bowl, Brady is 4-2 and a lot of people hold it against him, ie, Joe is undefeated in the Super Bowl, Brady is not.

As great as Montana was (my favorite all time Montana story is in the second Super Bowl match up vs the Bengals, right before the 49ers started their Super Bowl winning drive, Joe was in the huddle and out of nowhere, he says "Hey look, there's John Candy in the crowd" or words to that effect and it loosened up the whole team), he did not go out in a blaze of glory and his ending with the Chefs was not pretty.

I also remember in a playoff game vs the Giants, if memory serves me he threw a terrible INT and he got destroyed in the ensuing runback and was laying on the field like a corpse, I think that was his last game as a 49er?

Anyway, people are going to say what they want, they prefer Montana over Brady.........as far as Manning; great, great regular season stats with two teams, but his playoff record is terrible, he did win two Super Bowls, but he also threw a brutal PIC SIX in the 2009 Super Bowl as he was driving the Colts down the field for the game winning score that iced the game.

That PIC SIX for me anyway is a deal breaker.................
