I bought this very old book for 30p at some sale. It has a simple summary of the state of model soldier collecting then and contains many full colour pics, unfortunately, very small pictures showing minimal detail. I have selected three unique diorama pictures, which I find very attractive.

And yet another Almark book. They were prolific publishers in the military modelling field in their time. Many of their books were odd shaped booklets. Most were interesting, some were outstanding. I really like this book by Roy Dilley and Bryan Fosten. An earlier reviewed Almark book by the same two authors were on the diorama. This one focuses on the model soldier, with really nice drawings by Fosten.

I have that one too - though I had to pay a whopping £1 for mine! The pictures are really far too small though :Djb

That book by Simon Goodenough and Tradition is a good one Trooper.

Here are two more oldies. The book 'Modelling Miniature Figures' edited by Bruce Quarrie I have had for many years and found quite useful. It some ways it is a genuine time capsule in that there are chapters on Airfix/Historex conversions, converting 1/72 scale plastic figures, converting old Britains and also a chapter on acetate figures. I have an old Segom Napoleonic figure in the line up to be built and this is one of the few books that talk about them. Things most modelers don't do any more:(

I remember a couple of books I loved in the school library were the Battle of the Bulge and the American Revolution done with Toy Soldiers...

For the plastic fans, I attach some scans of a "Starlux" toy soldier catalog which I got from the ToySoldier Company many years back. I had purchased some very hard plastic Starlux figures then, approx. 60mm in height. Rgds Victor

Shep Paine is lauded as one of the most prolific modeller in the world. His book on making dioramas is worth getting for its practical approach, which also covers box dioramas, his speciality.

Hi All,

I also have a copy of Henry Harris' "Model Soldiers" book, with a different cover from Trooper's copy. One of my favourite toy soldier books, it features some very nice models, albeit with colour touch up on the pics.

These carriages were all built and beautifully displayed by the author.

Probably the best book featuring some of the finest model soldiers and their makers during the heyday of the model soldier industry. Many of these makers or their models are mentioned briefly in other books but this book gives good backgrounds on some of these makers. Each maker had a distinctive style and philosophical approach to their craft. These few pictures only give a bare glimpse of the quality of the models featured. Rgds Victor

The cover features a Napoleonic kettledrummer model made by one of the best makers Roger Berdou.

Many of these makers worked only to commission, so the only chance to see their works is at auction houses (if you have the money) or in older books like these.
