Hi All,

I also have a copy of Henry Harris' "Model Soldiers" book, with a different cover from Trooper's copy. One of my favourite toy soldier books, it features some very nice models, albeit with colour touch up on the pics.

I have the same cover as yours Vic - but also managed to find a version in French too. Here are both - with a nibbled corner to cover of French version. Probably by "Les Souris!"^&grin jb

Hi JB and all,

that's what happens when you keep mice as pets... I keep silverfish as pets.... Hence the regular domestic upheaval my side.... sigh!

Here's an oddity. A self-published set of two ring-bound booklets by Len Burrell. I suspect only those domicile in the UK would have seen these. Len Burrell was rather active in the UK modelling scene during the 80s. Not that I was contemporary - I gathered this from seeing some of his work in older Mil Modelling mags.

These two booklets were done in 1989. Burrell was an active exponent of large scale WWI/WWII figures sculpted with ERP (epoxy resin putty).

The first booklet largely covers basic sculpting concepts with wire armatures, and useful templates on specific weaponry and accessories.

The second booklet describes in some detail the set up of a mandrel turning device, largely to make specific accessories. Type-written pages with some nice photos and drawings, all in b/w.

This excellent booklet should be acquired by all military modellers. It is a collection of practical modelling ideas taken from Mil Modelling magazine. Stan Catchpol was a pseudonym for Bryan Fosten.

I have more books. Here are a couple of Kalmbach books:

This one is on photographing your models. All types are covered, from static to working, outdoors and shadowboxes. The cameras may be outdated by now but some of the setups for taking decent pics are in this book.

This other book is by Ray Anderson. A truly gifted modeller for conceptualising shadow boxes. He specialises in animating Historex figures. One of my fave books.

Here's a more recent book by Graham Dixey, a regular contributor to the MM magazine. it covers both round and flat figures, the basic points of making and painting your own miniatures, and it is a handy size.

This one will appeal to the toy soldier collector only. It covers the production of new metal solid cast toy soldiers that were made following the demise of W Britains hollowcast figures. Lots of small companies came and went then, and most of these are listed here alphabetically.

These two older books are recent acquisitions which are probably familiar to many of you.

"The Vikings" was bought from a really nice military bookshop in Hong Kong and "Medieval Military Dress" was obtained from Abebooks. Both contain excellent documentation and pictures. I've always admired Rothero's drawings in MilMod and this book has 86 drawings. I had also bought a lot of Pegaso accessories on helmets, shields, swords etc, so will be embarking on some of these warriors.

Have you got "Napoleonic uniforms recreated in colour photographs" it has a mounted 15th Hussar on the cover?

That is a great book
It had really great photographs and lots of useful information about a lot of manufacturers
It had a great photo of the Trophy Boer War steam engine

Great stuff . . . keep it coming! I've a lot of the books shown but am always looking for more. Charles Hall catalog anyone?

Hi Victor,

Hope you don't mind me posting this book. I picked this up a few weeks back and it has excellent photos and images of how to make scenery. It was printed in 1996.

I'm very tempted to build a cottage as described in the book. Figured I might just double the dimensions (Games Workshop is roughly 28mm?? wargames scale?)

Instructions on building bases, bridges, trees, walls, fences, rocks- great little book.:)

Hi Scott,

Post away! I saw that book before. Lots of great photos. I believe that the current wargames scale then was about 28mm, so presumably a rough doubling of their dimensions would be 56mm, close to 1/32 scale.

Hello Martin,

I post all the Napoleonic series from this Europa Militaria specials. The mounted 15th Kings Lt Dragoons (Hussars) is in the "Wellington's Army" book.
There is the 7th Hussars std bearer on the cover of "Napoleon's Line Cavalry".

I think not would be fair to say that is was that small hardcover book with the chariot in the front that got me into diorama making and collecting.

Can you show me the 15th Hussar? I just remembered it was on the front of Military Illustrated magazine!

Martin

Hello Martin,

I know the picture you are referring to in MI. All my copies of MI are now bound up into thick volumes and I can't scan the pics properly. What I can do is to scan some pics of the 15th Hussars from this Europa book.
