Put my dog down this weekend...I'm bummed... (3 Viewers)

Very sorry to hear and sorry for late reply. I felt extremely lucky in that I had 4 great German Shepherds and 44 years of pure joy. Brutus, Rebel, Duke and Nero will be forever in my heart and memory. From a kindergartner to pushing 48, I was still that kindergartner when around them. Dogs are special, probably better friends than most humans. They are the only friend who will always greet you happily and be genuinely interested in what you are up to!

Sad time for you Mike, very sorry to hear of your loss

I had never heard of this either but this poem and George’s first post got to me, not afraid to admit.

It just shows you you're human and are comfortable in your own skin.

But more importantly, shows you're a good person with a soul.

The day I don't get emotional over such things will be the day I know I am a broken human being.

Mike,

I'm sorry about your loss. Putting down a dog, a really special one, is one of the hardest things I've ever done. I have four dogs, and losing one is a nightmare.

Mike,
Ugh, just heartbreaking to think about. Hard to beat a dog’s love and companionship. My boy Max means so much to me in just two years. It’s hard to contemplate what you’re experiencing. I love the thought of them waiting for us. Thanks George for the poem!

Sadly I can't see myself getting another Dog since I downsized. I now live in an over 50's complex, have a small unfenced yard and I'm not keen on having Dogs inside, to much hair etc. Another issue is the cost of health care etc for animals. I was speaking to a Truck driver at work last Monday, he said he had to pay AUD $3,500 in Vet bills for his daughters Dachshund, apparently it needed an operation to remove a still born Pup. That's a lot of money for the average Truckie, but hard to say No to your Daughter I guess.

My Father was a Veterinarian so I'm aware that First pregnancies often have issues, especially when they are mated young. Anyway, I didn't mention that it's likely to have other expensive health issues such as back problems etc. People just don't do enough homework on what Dog breeds they are thinking about buying, some Breeds are very prone to health problems.

That said, my youngest son's dog Bonnie, is such a loveable Jack Russell. Here she is dressed up for Christmas last year.

Pat & Pat...

I got Boo from the Houston Miniature Schnauzer Rescue Center 14 years ago...he was 3 years old then...
they said he was a lost Hurricane Ike dog...
don't let the name fool you...I paid $500 to rescue him...but he was chipped, spayed and current on shots...
pets are expensive to buy and usually very costly to maintain...
usually his visits to the vet were more expensive than mine to my doctor...lol...
couldn't walk out of that place without spending $400 per visit...
at his biggest...he was 24 lbs...a big chest and a very strong stocky dog...
he was a barker...barked at everybody...lol...annoying at the time...but I miss it now...
Vet would just laugh and say "Schnauzers were talkers...
I could throw his ball 100 times and he would bring it back to me...eager for me to throw it again...
at the end he was 12 lbs....he just quit eating his special blend that I made him...
a wet can mix that I added pasta and green beans too...
so I would make him French toast and bacon the last few weeks..
he loved the bacon and syrup...but eventually even lost interest in that...
he had to be hand fed one small piece at a time the last couple of weeks...and then finally he just refused to eat anything...
I always shared my people food with him...he loved Chinese food and pasta...
I will get another dog...one day soon I hope...
I have some personal issues that I need to through before it would be fair to adopt another dog...
looking forward to that day...
thanks to everyone for their comments...so much appreciated...thanks!

Thank you for the shared memories, Mike. This is Pat Senior. It is always a flood of remembered little things that accompany these feisty & friendly guys. Our Pep III we still miss. He was complimented by our Vet as the 'most feared animal' that ever came into their office (he wasn't a talker...but if you messed with him, he'd nip you before you knew it). Our new girl is definitely a 'talker'. Her amazement at all things new (toads in summer, snowfall in winter) is a delight. Sincere Best Wishes.

Mike,

Man sad, just sad. We had to put down our mama Labrador named Maddie "Moosie" after she had a spinal rupture in early December. The wife and I called them to go to bed and she just went paralyzed from the mid back down. Out of all the Labradors I've had she was the kindest, most loving and smartest Lab we had. She gave us two litters of labs to which we kept one from each litter so we still have her sons in the family.

Needless to say it was a bad, sad day.

We like big mini schnauzers. Less frail. Glad you saved Boo!
They always bark - it can't be stopped sometimes, and and they love people food. Our 1st Pep liked fried calamari and any candy I had...
Since you seem to be the schnauzer guy in your home, it's a good idea to wait until you feel up to a new dog.
We jumped right into a new one to ease our grief. She is truly insane. In a good way - I think!
I have been thinking of Boo this Christmas and I am very sad about your loss.
But I hope you had a Merry Christmas anyway! We are all still alive.
Sorry to answer so many times, but I was really moved by your post & grief.
