I think it's a case of the English doesn't seem to be jelling and that Algeria is not playing that badly. I had read somewhere that Algeria probably had one good match in them. I wonder if this is the one.

Not many positives for us there,Algeria defending well too.I fear a draw or worse here.

Rob

Yesterday it was Tony Hayward from BP and today it was the England football team.Two p*** poor performances with no conviction in front of an angry and disappointed audience.

Better book the meals for the flights home Mr Capello,I'd have the chicken if I was you.

Rob

What the hell was that ??

I think next time they should submit the Aberystwyth choral society to represent us. SERIOUSLY !!! What a disappointment.

Unbelievable. I know this is a good result for the USA but too see the English side play like this is, in a way, saddening and not to mention disappointing.

Steve McManaman over on ESPN just killed them.

This is actually worse than their match against the US. Next to the Spain match, this is the most surprising result so far.

They are still in good position to move on but the style of play has to be a concern.

It was Pathetic.

My dear wife who has no interest in football but always cheers England on pointed out how often our players stand off their opponents instead of getting in there and tackling.Awful performance.

Slovenia will be even harder.

I am dreading that game as you said Rob....order the chicken :(

The thing that summed up the whole game and Englands performance the most,that bloody great pigeon for ages pirched atop the Algeria goal without being disturbed!

Rob

As far as the disallowed goal goes, you can't say that it would have been a goal because the ref blew the whistle immediately (excessive shirt grabbing is always one of the usual reasons they give) and the players stopped playing. I've seen that happen before unfortunately.
US is not in an easy position. Assuming England wins today, England and Slovenia are tied in points with 4 each. US need to beat Algeria and then hope for one of them to beat the other. If there is a tie between England and Slovenia, three teams would then have five points and it gets tricky because of the goal differential rule.

Here are the rules:

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their
rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the
teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams
concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams
concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

Also, don't forget that in the third group game, both matches are played at the same time. This is done in order to avoid collusion (goes back to 1982 WC) and one side not playing hard.

All you can say is it will be interesting.

Brad, thanks for the clarification about Soccer rules which I do not fully understand. Imo FIFA should introduce the 'advantage rule' as used in some sports in Australia where scores are allowed to stand if members in the opposing team are playing against the rules.

But I doubt they will adopt my suggestion because they still haven't introduced the Video Referee that we use use in Australia in Rugby League etc :)

wow what a game ha!????

I am sad because i think we should keep this 2:0 lead but hey hwat can you do right?
Congratulations USA for the fight

Well about the game:

-biiiiiiiiig mistake of our defender CESAR,he did a poor job and an very good and expirience attacker like Landon Donovan make a beautyfull goal from a very hard ankle-i give him all respect!! and i also think our goalkeešer defence are very poor from this goal even he is a very good goalkeeper,i guees it was not his day today......

-i think this fast goal from Landon Donovan,make some fear in our players and they start to play not so defensive.I was very angry at their play,because they was sooo confuse,they didnt know what to do (atacking or defending 2:1),...it was very nervous game....

I also think th ereferee was a little confuse because he dissalowed this goal because it was some shirt pulling but i think it is his decision and he will need to answer for it.It is not Slovenia's fault for the reeferee decision.
I also think this was a goal and USA shoul win but hey i am happy that it was a draw so now everyone still have a chance.It will be more interesting.
But i also know that refeere at begining he allowed a very ugly game from Dempsey and not give him a card at least yellow one,so maybe than the reefere feel that he was not completely honest or he was just lost in the game i do not know but in my country we also didnt agree with his decisions about Dempyes not getting a card and some other USA players didnt get a card for their bad behavior for a long time,....

It is football,sometimes you get some sometimes you lost some,...we are all in the game....

At least now you know who Slovenians are and that we are not so bad or stupid or poor team and that we can also score some beautyfull goals.
I think our Coach make some mistakes in tactics or players didnt listen to him,...i hope our game will improve for England and i am sure we will play nice game with England,but i think that USA can have a lot of troubles with the Algeria.USA must win and this is also a big preasure and i am sure that Algeria will fight so like i say everything is still open,and who knows maybe we will win against England!!!

I think at the end we all can be satisfiad by the beautyfull game that it was played in this SLOVENIJA-usa match!

GOOOOOOOOO SLOVENIJA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(we are still in the game!!!)

Ales, I was impressed with the way Slovenia played, they are a World Class Team and I wish them luck in the World Cup. I hope FIFA introduce some better Referees and Rules to this sport as I do try to like Soccer as much as I like Rugby League.

England v. Algeria, boring, disappointing, where is the old English football I used to like so much? Liverpool of old, Dalglish, Keegan, anyone, come back to entertain me out of this:eek:. It was actually worse than the performance against the USA! The players look dejected, no flame, no speed (a little more speed might help...), no nothing. I just can't understand what a man like Heskey is doing playing for England, he can't play football at all, how come Joe Cole doesn't play instead of him, is Joe Cole comatose or something? Is there no better striker in England besides Rooney? Michael Owen hasn't been playing a lot but I am sure he can still play light years better than Heskey ever will. I had never seen Rooney play so bad, look so passive...And he is still surprised people boo them... A real shame. Are these players feeling fustrated because of people always thinking they should bring the cup when really they are very far from it and should probably start from scratch? It's looking like Uruguay, champions in the nineteen thirties and gone downhill since then (wait, Uruguay are playing fine now...).
My team, Portugal, is also looking pretty boring and uninspired. Am I going to see both my sentimental favorites on the way home soon?
It's curious that both England and Portugal do have some skill, people who know how to pass the ball around decently, but at the speed and intensity they are playing I prefer not to to watch them at all...
Give me back the European Champion's League or the Lakers v. Celtics over this anytime.
I am sure Mourinho or Hitzfeld would know how to extract something useful out of this people,if given a decent opportunity to work them...:rolleyes:
Oh well, things can change, and if they don't, it's just a game, there is always them LAKERS...

Paulo

One thing to say: if England wants, one day become a champion they have to really but really improve their game, it was terrible ugly....football match

Sorry for that.

I think every single England fan will agree with you Rod. Shameful :(

Nothing here from my side to support the German game today but the referee passed out cards because of one single attitude and that is "I CAN".
It was simply ridiculous and it killed the game during the first half.
Serbia deserved their goal but the whole match was killed by the ref.
How are you supposed to play? Make sure not to touch each other at all?
How do those refs get picked and what qualifies them to rule a World Cup game? FIFA has to work on that.
Konrad

Easy; they are former NBA referees, another sport where if you breathe on another player, they call a foul.

Pitiful.

The referees need to understand something; the fans do not pay to see THEM, they pay to see the match/game, the egomaniacs that they all seem to be...........
