Possibly the most disgraceful and unjust sending off of the whole tournament, the Ivory coast player should be punished.

Rob

He may be punished because Ivory Coast needs Brazil to beat Portugal for Ivory Coast to advance and they have caused KaKa to miss the game against Portugal. They may have just shot themselves in the foot.

I just saw that on replay and what a farce that was; bad acting too. FIFA have to overturn the red although for Brasil it doesn't matter since they've qualified. Still, right is right and that second yellow wasn't right.

Sending Kaka off was a bad call by the ref, the acting of the IC player was a disgrace and I really like the way you think, Terry ;)

It could matter to Brazil as they probably want to finish first and play the second place team from Group H, but Group H includes Spain and it is impossible to guess the order of finish right now. Spain could end up the second place team. Maybe it will be a bit clearer after tomorrow.

Guys, tell me that sending off was an absolute disgrace, tell me you both saw it!

Rob

Rob, KAKA is really struggling with him self, have hard time with the passes, I think this substitution, just forgot his name, will put more speed along with Robinho and Luis Fabiano, in the front.

Yes, that is true and I just can't imagine FIFA wouldn't reverse this. It was so blatant.

As far as Group H, I find it worrisome that the Spanish Soccer Federation has backed Del Bosque, even Spain doesn't emerge from the group, and that the players say they aren't going to change their style of playing at all. They better rethink that one.

I don't think they should change their style - how can they at this stage. They need an aggressive strategy to make less perfect short passes and get shots on the goal

Terry

Fabiano has admitted that his second goal was a hand ball. In my mind, although Brasil were the better side, it does cloud the final result. Needless to say, the Ivory Coast manager was livid.

In the event that the ref didn't witness the infraction, wouldn't common sense dictate that the ref would have to give the benefit of the doubt to the accused fouler? If the ref didn't see it, how can he send the accussed off? Don't rules cover this? -- Al

I agree Lancer. FIFA rely on the referee and do not allow the use of television replays for decisions whilst the game is in progress. Clearly this also rules out any infringements he did not witness even if they are made evident by television after the event occured.

Do I understand correctly that the one referee is expected to be able to see the whole match? Seems a bit of a reach to think that he could have such good eyes to take it all in at once.

They have linesmen on the sidelines that report infringements to the referee but I think the lone referee still controls the game - a very antiquated system imo.

The referee follows the ball that is where the action is. The ref should be able to see any foul play. Two playes are not going to tackle each other if they don't have the ball nor are they going to have a handball if they are not near the ball. It's quite simple really, I guess if you are not used to the sport it would seem weird. I can't grasp American football, it takes forever and seems like for the most part the players are stood around and it is always stopping and starting but hey ! it's what we are brought up with :)

In advance of tomorrow's clash, all the Spanish seem, according to the Spanish papers, confident, and you wouldn't expect them to say anything different. The manager, Del Bosque, hasn't tipped his hand as to whom he's going to start except to say that Iniesta has some injury woes so we'll see who he starts. Marca.com, which has lots of information about the WC, is challenging readers to pick their starting 11.

The referee should be able to see any foul play, but the television evidence has proved that few of them can - or want to ;)

I had alluded to this before but some newer fans may ask or wonder why the final (third) group stage matches are played at the same time. Here's the answer:

In 1982 a draw or an Austrian win would eliminate West Germany. A German win by three or more goals would eliminate Austria. But a German victory by one or two goals would eliminate Algeria. After the West Germans scored 10 minutes into the match, the two sides basically kicked the ball around, doing very little, almost intentionally trying not to score. When the final 1-0 score line eliminated Algeria, the African side lodged a complaint with FIFA. The result was allowed to stand, but it was clear to everyone what had happened.

Unfortunately, we have some matches coming up, such as Mexico Uruguay, where the two sides could take this approach.

Thanks Rod,so you don't think Brazil will miss him that much if he should be suspended? I thought Brazil played well as a team last night with good passing and control of the ball, it's blatant cheating like that of the Ivory coast player that can ruin a tournament and I hope they crack down on it

Portugal is doing very well. Congratulations to them. It is raining goals on N.Korea. 3 goals in 15 minutes. Whew! I need an adding machine.:p -- Al
