South Africa 2010 (3 Viewers)

Gotta say the South American teams are all looking pretty good. They are the only region that has not lost a team, yet. They are set pretty well for tomorrow's last 1st round games, too. Africa has taken a beating with only 1 of their 6 teams left. And the US has to play that 1 team Saturday. It is going to be a tough one for the US as the Ghana team has looked good. The Germany-England game is another good one. Going to be an exciting Saturday and Sunday. GO USA and England! -- Al

Paulo, good luck for you and Portugal Tomorrow, I do hope we'll get an interesting game from both sides.

Denmark in big trouble. That second goal by Japan was a beaut. Little bit surprised that the Italians went out, waiting too long to wake up. Sorry the Kiwis went out. They're in the same position the US was almost in, 3 ties and going home. That bites, but all they needed was the one goal. Still, a valiant effort. -- Al

It's great that the Jap and Kiwi teams have done so well in a sport that is traditionally English/European considering the FIFA antics of years past when they didn't encourage new countries to compete.

I will take the word "afraid" you writte earlier. I think not that we afraid about England. We have respect! ;)

When England play against Germany........its ever and ever something special....how the UK Press wrote.....the old enemy..... I love the English press.....they push up the duell to the top....... I can only speak for me......for me Football ist England....and England is football...........and its a great feeling if Germany beat the Motherland of Football............and how i write before.....i love the comments of the press if England lost against the huns. ;) :D

sorry for the bad english....but thats to much words for me......... :( and i don´t learn enough at school...........

LOL - are you sure the UK papers weren't refering to their 'other' Old Enemy, us Australians. And I do mean Australians, not Austrians, or anyone born in Austria that may have subsequently moved to Germany  :D

My apologies for a poor choice in words.

I try to keep my perspective when reading the press and media releases amid all the hype generated by the World Cup matches.

England versus Germany matches usually attract a fair amount of media/press attention and public comment.

As in all things, there is no need to go over the top.

It should be a good match this weekend.

As both teams are already qualified I think it'll be more like a friendly game, here they are saying Ronaldo won't play to protect him from a 2nd yellow card, they'll need him much more in the knockout stages...

Abraço, vou tentar ver mesmo que gravado, deve ser bom jogo e estou convencido que o Brasil tem muitas hipóteses de ser o campeão, só a Argentina é que pode fazer sombra. E uma final Argentina-Brasil? Espectáculo!

Watched the Brazil-Portugal game with great anticipation. Great disappointment in a lackluster 0-0 tie. Maybe the Chile-Spain game will be better. -- Al

It has to be better! Spain are facing elimination can,t lose. Maybe, we will have this afternoon one of the best games of the competition.

Hi Rodrigo, we drew and we both went through;), so congrats are in order, abraço amigo. Brazil v. Portugal was a very defensive game, but being soccer what it is nowadays, it wasn't a surprise that it went like that. Both teams were already qualified, made a few changes to their lineups and were already thinking ahead-the knockout stages (in 3 or 4 days:eek:) were and are all that matters now... I liked Brazil's defensive performance, very solid defence and midfield, midfield won almost all the «rebounds», this might make a great difference in the future if Dunga is right:rolleyes:. Attack was generally well stopped by Portugal's defence and Portugal only played the counter. Not much more to say about the game...
Next, a hard bone for Portugal: Spain-they are not firing on all cilinders yet but... I hope we'll be hard on them too:rolleyes:.
It's a pity that because of scoring being harder than with other sports soccer can become too tactic and defensive. Defence is part of the game and good defence has to be valued, but what we like is great offensive shows:p. Watching soccer is feeling like looking for the Holy Graal...:D. Open games are getting rarer and rarer, and the further the games progress the harder to get them. Unless someone scores early a few penalty shootouts must be coming up (so that people can bite their nails off:D). Finals generally are very boring... But oh well, there is always some emotion...

Didn't see the Spain match since it started at 230 am here in Shanghai but gratified they won and will not have to face Brasil at this point.

Kind of surprised at Italy going out and Japan scoring three.

Onto the knockout!

Hello Paulo,

I was expecting something like that, maybe 1 x 1. boring for the public who paid to see a good spectacle. But for sure things will warming-up with the next round and some good games are on the schedule, starting tomorrow.

Good luck against the Spain, i think that Portugal has the potential to beat Spain.

Boa sorte amigo, ciau.

I'm new to the whole World Cup event (though I'm finding it quite interesting), but I have a question. What's the deal with team names. At first I thought that they were just some nicknames thrown out for fun, but I see that in the ESPN reports they seem to use them as official names. Does the US have one?

Sorry to be clueless...so much to learn!

I think you are referring to the nicknames of the national teams.

Here is a list:

Well, it's semi-official. FIFA has made a very rare almost unprecedented statement that all is not well. They have admitted admitted there is a problem with the ball, that they have heard the complaints of the players and teams, and are looking into it. Although what can be done about it now is anyone's guess.

I don't think that the ball is the major problem NOW, they have been using this ball for almost 4 weeks. The problem still the poor quality of the games. Players are very scare to go forward.....

What the bleep is the matter with the US team in the first 15 minutes or so of these games? It is like they are sleep walking. It is really aggravating to keep having to come from behind, not to mention that one of these times it will be fatal. They have now done this in 3 of the 4 games. -- Al

Also the refs have been handing out cards like confetti and quite a few yellow and especially red cards have been quite unfair and have spoiled games:(. I guess that's what you get when FIFA starts pressing them to be very strict on discipline, fouls and cards. Just let them do their jobs as they normally do...
