Marathon time! It really picks up around episode 5. My comment about the first episode is that it came off a bit too much like a comic book or "300" remake. Not that is was bad, but it got better as the characters developed. The women on the show have developed nicely too. ;)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I thought the episode (8) with the mutilated (putting it mildly) and crucified gladiator was kind of ground breaking for anything I've seen on TV or cable. Still have that image in my head. -- Al

Yes........:D

definitely a marathon...

I have seen 1 and 2...

still a marathon...

1 The Red Serpent Play 54 minutes A Thracian warrior enlisted by the Romans to fight has his destiny seized by an act of rebellious violence. As punishment, he faces death by being forced to battle in the gladiatorial arena.

2 Sacramentum Gladiatorum Play 53 minutes Enslaved in gladiatorial school, the newly christened Spartacus must try to suppress his desire for vengeance when his new master promises to reunite him with his wife.

3 Legends Play 56 minutes Though Spartacus proved himself during training and now wears the attire of a gladiator, his coarse attitude and relentless quest to see his wife isolates him from his fellow gladiators and Doctore.

4 Thing in the Pit Play 50 minutes Having performed shamefully in the arena against Crixus, Spartacus is forced to fight in the Pits. Batiatus, determined to profit from Spartacus, may be at risk if his debts aren't repaid.

5 Shadow Games Play 56 minutes Batiatus is presented with a gladiatorial opportunity of a lifetime. Spartacus and Crixus must overcome their mutual hostility to fight as a team against a legendary and unbeaten opponent.

6 Delicate Things Play 55 minutes With the glory and riches reaped by Spartacus's victory in the arena, it appears that his long-desired reward will be granted when Batiatus informs him that he will be reunited with his wife.

7 Great and Unfortunate Things Play 52 minutes Overcome by his wife's death and the pressure of Batiatus's control, Spartacus must make a choice: leave his past behind and assume the mantle of a champion gladiator, or die.

8 Mark of the Brotherhood Play 52 minutes Batiatus purchases a fresh batch of slaves at an auction to be trained as gladiators and ponders the idea of selling Crixus. Ilythia coaxes a new recruit to try to kill Spartacus.

9 Whore Play 51 minutes Batiatus breaks the news that Spartacus is to service the richest woman in Rome.

10 Party Favors Play 52 minutes Spartacus and Crixus are set up to fight in an exhibition match for Numerius's birthday -- but Crixus is intent on blood.

11 Old Wounds Play 52 minutes Spartacus hovers on the brink. Meanwhile, Batiatus plots revenge against his enemies.

Well the season finale was on tonight. Any comments? At 1st I really could not see myself watching this series for more then 1 or 2 episodes, but as time progressed and I made it to episode 3,4 and 5 I began to find it interesting. I remember at 1st I thought the acting was very poor and the story line needed some work however as time progressed the story got better and the acting seemed to be a notch better. Then again maybe I just got use to the bad acting :D All in all though I would have to say the season finale was very good. Everyone that had something coming to them got what was expected with the exception of a few and the revolt that I really tuned into each week for finally came.

I thought it was good also.It won't rank with the best shows of all time but is enjoyable.Season 2 has been delayed as the guy who plays Spartacus has some form of cancer but the doctors say is very treatable.

Found the season closer to be outstanding. It is not often that a series will slaughter everyone in sight in one episode. What a bloodbath! I found that I really got interested in the characters as the season went on. I almost gave up on the show after the first episode but I am very glad I stuck with it. I hope that the star actor recovers from his cancer. That is a rough break for anyone. If you watch this series, do it from the start or you will lose out on the reasons for all the back-stabbing and animosity between the characters. It turned into a real entertaining contest to see who can be the worst scuzball. -- Al

What a great show! Of no historical value, but a lot of fun.

Reports of his demise appear to be premature - this sound like good news if true:

Fans of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" will be happy to hear that star Andy Whitfield, who has been battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma, will return to Starz in January. "Spartacus" will return in a prequel series, starring John Hannah and Lucy Lawless, the Chicago Tribune's Watcher blog reports.

Contrary to rumors, the role of Spartacus will not be re-cast.

According to Starz, Whitfield is "responding well" to treatment and will appear as Spartacus in 2 out of 6 planned episodes. The prequel series will focus on the rise of the House of Batiatus, the gladiator academy, and will revolve around the relationship between Lawless' and Hannah's characters, Lucretia and Batiatus.

"The prequel story maintains the excitement and entertainment value of the first season of 'Spartacus,' giving audiences the engaging experience they've come to expect," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement released Tuesday, May 11.

"Fortunately, Andy is responding to his treatments, and will be able to be part of this prequel in a limited capacity."

This is good news. The planned prequel also sounds very viable. Should be interesting to see where the personalities came from. -- Al

I really don't care about a prequel. Are they gonna have the series back fully and pick up the story where it left off.

If anyone had based watching this show on the first 20 posts on this thread....

they never would have turned the tv on...

seems like everybody started to like it after they gave it some time...

Probably depends on the health of the guy who plays Spartacus.

I must say that despite me thinking to start with that this was a bit cartoonish nonsense I now really enjoy it!. The characters have grown on me and I think its pretty good entertainment. Brutal but the buckets of blood are done in such a way that it kind of becomes the norm if you see what I mean, even my wife who hates too much gore is enjoying it. Although it can still be shocking none the less, the scene where the woman had her smashed in on the side of the pool was an eye opener:eek:.

yeah

It may well be a shameless rip off of 300 & Gladiator with a large dose of over the top hammy acting but heck it's certainly become compulsive viewing for me to the point of almost being a guilty pleasure.;)

Reb

They used to call them 'Blood and sandals' epics, this is more 'Tits and Togas' ;)
