Sudan Campaigns 1880 - 1898 (1 Viewer)

Thanks , I 'll try some more posts. I only have a few boxes as well , and the ones I have only have stickers for identication . I like a number of manufactiurers , but I particularly like the heft of Trophy. I have been collecting for 22 years , off and on , I just retired and I am enjoying the forum

Besty regards
Kirk

My Trophy catalogues have the following Regiments available to be painted in khaki uniforms for the EGYPT and THE SUDAN campaigns:

NORTH STAFFS
CONNAUGHT RANGERS
ROYAL SUSSEX REGIMENT
ROYAL WEST KENT REGIMENT
GRENADIER GUARDS

But Len would also “paint to order” which is where the LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT could have come from

I think you will find that facing colours were redundant on khaki, the Regiment flashes were starting to appear on helmets

Cheers

Martyn

Thank you Martyn,

You are right but the facings still were in use during Sudan war, as a matter of fact Khaki uniforms took over during the Boer wars.

It would be great if you could take a picture showing soldiers of each Sudan regiment side by side and do the same for Boer War regiments.

Hi Al

It will be my pleasure to take pictures of the various Regiments I have. I think that the only Regiment not wearing khaki in the 1896/1898 Sudan campaign was the Royal Marines.

The other Regiment the Trophy produced for the Sudan campaign was of course the YORKS and LANCS. I can post pictures showing a comparison of the Yorks and Lancs and 2nd Somerset helmet flash if that helps. In fact the helmet flash on my Yorks and Lancs is the same as shown in the picture posted by Lawrence of this Lincolnshire Regiment.

Cheers

Martyn:)

I don't know if you mean toys soldiers or real regiments? By 1898 there were no British regiments using facing colours, only helmet "flashes". In 1884/85 there were only a couple and one of these had to borrow another regiments tunics!

Welcome to the forum, Kirk. Your photography is light-years ahead of mine. Thanks for sharing.

Here are a couple of examples of helmet “flashes” I have in my collection

Thank you, Martyn...but how do you make a difference between Yorks and Lans?
I also have King Rifles in green uniforms on one of my Sudan Victoria gun boats ... I will post the pictures later today.

How does one differentiate between each regiment that wore Khakhi? I can see the difference in the flashing on the Somerset, but how about the others? Just curious as I will still play with them :)

When the British army switched to wearing khaki the regiments began to wear helmet flashes, some with the name of the regiment, others just a color or tartan patch. I believe Trophy went with a generic patch that was seen quite often: red with the regimental name in white letters (the little white "V" on the Trophy flash). That flash could be a number of different regiments which is good for toy soldier collectors who like to create sets for many different battles.

I am not sure what the Somerset flash looked like in real life. It may have had a white bugle because they were light infantry, but the Somerset flash on the Trophy figures looks very similar to the flash of the West Yorkshire Regiment with the two vertical white lines.

Here is a link to a forum discussion about helmet flashes:

4thhussar , you may be correct about the generic use of flashes by Trophy.
The Lancaster flash on the link seems to indicate that .
Does anyone have any copies of Trophy ads with other regiments in khaki to see if they did differentiate them in any other way .

They are all great figures !

As promised a picture of 3 different regiment that came with my 2 Sudan "Victoria" gun boats. A King Riffle soldier is one in green.

Excellent Al. Looks like a Scots Guard sitting at the other end to the KRRC

My Victoria (now Hans') came with at least two different regiments than the ones you are depicting. Two were redcoated (so one might be the redcoated regiment on your steamer), the third wore blue uniforms (Royal Artillery or Royal Engineers).

Louis,
I showed only "sitting" soldiers on this picture: there were other regiments on the board in blue: Royal Marines. I will post pictures of both gunboats with their crews when time permits. I also have almost complete set of a crew for the 3th gunboat which is still to be found :)

Al: The first reference I found to the "Nile Paddle Steamer" was in the 1988 Catalogue. It listed "18 seated British Troups", 2 privates and an officer and a colour sergeant, all drinking tea of course. I guess you received what Len sent unless it was a special order. Mine is a later year model and does not have crewmen operating a deck winch loading boxes of fruit. Does anyone have a "Victoria" with the deck winch? If so, please post a photo.

I was also only referencing sitting troops holding cups. Mine had crewmen carrying boxes of fruit, but no deck winch.
