Sudan Signal Tower (1 Viewer)

I made this Sudan signal tower for my Jenkin's Nile figures...I changed it a little from the picture Randy posted...it looked a little rickety if it was going be that high...so I beefed mine up a little bit...I think I will put mine on top of my garrison...I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out...hope John makes an officer with a telescope...

Michael, what would you do with yourself if you didn't have a supply of popsickle sticks and razor knives ;). Another nice looking structure.
:) Mike

Thank you...Nick, Robin, Jeff, Randy, Scott, Louis, Martyn, Joe and Mike...

Nick...you know I got a flag ordered from your guy...:D...Union Jack...

Robin...I'm sure yours will be beautiful...I know you do great work...

Randy/Scott...you two need to get started on some more research and find me some small Sudan projects...the key word here is "small"...

Mike...you should try these...they are very easy...just like putting a model together except you make your own pieces...

Do you remember the nice tents UKREB made out of real canvas from the fabric store? Lots of tents used in the Sudan. Of course, many were bell tents such as the new one WB will be issuing. Here is a drawing of a canvas shelter made during the Sudan War that I hope will give you an idea for working with canvas. it looks pretty simple: canvas, some dowels and string for rope? I really hope John makes a camp scene in the desert and includes some nurses as seen here.

The illustration made by Walter Paget at Suakim is described as a "races tent" like the tents used at British racetracks to keep the guests cool while eating and drinking. As you can see tea is being served here.

Enough of these small projects :)

I mean this most sincerely Michael and I do believe that you could make a beautiful Nile boat with all of your talent.

okay, Mike, the gig is up.... in the 5th picture down, cant really make it out, but looks like a pistol holster with CIA on the webbing, on back of the chair. So you're just building all this stuff awaiting your next contract.....

Randy...I have some nice Jenkin's tents...unless I was going to make a regiment's camp site...I don't think I would try this...but thanks for looking for ideas for me...it's a good idea...but I already own some...

Scott...when you want something like that...I think you wait for the pros to make it...JJD, Trophy or Wm. Brit should satisfy...it's way beyond my talent...

Very interesting. Can you elaborate? Do you mean during the war or 1st ever?

Randy

As I undersood it the members of the Army Nursing Service ( what was to become the quarancs ) were the first ever white women to travel up the Nile into Sudan. They also took part in the 1882 Egypt campaign. I've always liked that uniform and fancied a few of the nurses.:D

A bit more info about Nurses in the Sudan.

This is the front page of my copy of THE GRAPHIC dated Saturday, February 7, 1885

I don't wish to hijack Mikes thread but whilst we are on the subject of Nile boats, would it be possible to modify the K&C US Steam Launch into a Sudan one? The crew and the insignia etc will need changing but would it make a passable rendition? The cost of one of these is quite affordable and also the size does matter! (It needs to fit into my cabinet).

All comments appreciated.

Although I am no expert, I can't see why not Jeff. It does look very similar to the Little Legion Nile boat so I am sure alittle "kit bashing" will produce a suitable model.

Martin

How about making some nurses for your Heritage Sudan line?

I wish you would do some Sudan camp scene figures as in the Paget illustration of nurses I posted below.

From http://www.qaranc.co.uk/history.php

Boer and Egyptian Wars

Members of the new Army Nursing Service were sent to the First Boer War (often called Zulu War) from 1879 to 1881, later to the Egyptian Campaign in 1882 and the Sudan War of 1883 to 1884. During the Sudan War members of the Army Nursing Service nursed in hospital ships on the Nile as well as the Citadel in Cairo. It is thought that the first white women to go up the Nile were army nurses (cited in the book Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (Famous Regts. S) by Juliet Piggott).
