Summer 1940 - 'Dowding's Harvest' (1 Viewer)

Great looking diorama. I was thinking of using that set in front of a Nissan Hut but your diorama has now changed that. The Battle of Britain is one of the best stories of World War 2. I hope there are many more exciting new sets.
Great job.
Cheers

Rob,
Great job! The detail and weathering look great! I like the plowed up dirt on the wings.
Semper Fi!

Thanks guys I really appreciate your very kind comments.Since I joined the forum some years back I have seen so many of you produce amazing dio's and paint jobs,I always wanted to have a go myself but never really took the step of actually doing it.The response to my scene has been so good and encouraging that I will definitley be doing more:).

WOW Rob, what a great first

As a teenager I made heaps of dioramas for my 1/35 plastic tanks. When I got older I stopped making plastic kits and dioramas but having seen yours it has reignited my old dio passion and I intend to get back into making them again.

Now, what do I start off with

Thanks Oz thats very kind of you.I started thinking about a dio when i saw this new set and then it grew in my head (not a lot of room in there you might think!;))until i finally knew just what i was after. As Reb said it really is addictive and am now trying to pin down what to do next.

Doesn't sound weird at all. Works good for that effect. Just I never used it but now I might. :)

Hope it doesn't get hot and humid on the K&C stand in June, it could be one of those Kenco moments!!

You can also try used coffee grounds, just make sure they are dry. Lay them out on a baking sheet for a couple days. I have used it for farm displays and you can make furrows in it. Looks great.

I looked at loads of shot down ME109's online (there were so many-and other aircraft)and there were a few that came down in hay fields. There were also pics which showed earth over the wings, some several inches deep. The bullet holes are very interesting.I'd kind of had the idea of doing them in the 'traditional' manner in which you may for instance see them in a film,in a straight-ish line. But on doing research i found that the holes were everywhere and not in a regular pattern.

It was also the case that many of these aircraft including many ME109's came down either because their engine overheated, they ran out of petrol or a single bullet in the engine did the business. There are apparently still many Luftwaffe planes waiting to be found in the woods and forests of the South of England, makes me want a metal detector!(I'd also like to venture into High wood on the Somme, but my wife absolutely forbids it!:()

The Ashdown Forest is a good place to go for a hunt around, near to the village of Forest Row they recently found bits of a Me110. Also, Lingfield was cordoned off when they found a UXB in a friend's back garden a couple of years ago!

There are some excellent local histories in Surrey and Sussex about the BoB and WW2. Some of the most sad are the bombing of the Whitehall cinema in East Grinstead and the primary school again in Lingfield by lone luftwaffe bombers dropping their arsenal before reaching the capital. In both cases there were large losses of life. The area also came under fierce bombardment from V1s dropping short of London.

I agree on this, as I live near here as well (East Sussex). My Dad (when he was a kid) and his mates found part of a Churchill tank turret left behind by the Canadians which were camped nearby.

If I remember rightly, if you go up the A22 towards Godstone on the left at Blindley Heath you could see the remains of pillboxes built in 1940 for the anticipated invasion. Can't remember if they are still there.

The Canadians were based at Hobbs Barracks on the A22 between East Grinstead and Godstone. Many of the officers were billeted in nearby Holtye House. Some East Grinstead families have relatives living in Canada today, some of the servicemen marrying local girls. I have a vague feeling the Canadians boasted an armoured unit in the area, some being flown into France after D-day from Coolham airfield near Billingshurst?

These were billited at Crowborough, where I live. My Dad and his mates used to get rides in the back of Bren Gun carriers.

On the Golf Course there is a monument to the Canadians who were killed when a V1 dropped out of the sky onto their tented encampment.

All over Sussex and Kent there are pilllboxes,Tank traps, remains of anti Tank ditches and all manner of other items for the defence of this country. Some years back the 'Defence of Britain' project logged all these defences right across the country and there are i believe moves to have them listed as protected buildings.Wherever you go in this country you are never too far from a pillbox or innocent looking lump of concrete that once barred the way to Nazi invaders.

The things i REALLY want to find are the secret bases of 'Churchills secret army' the small groups of trained saboteurs designed to strike and then disappear into the countryside in the event of a Nazi invasion. These consisted of small underground dugouts and weapon dumps in the wooded areas of Britain, they were manned by farmers, game keepers etc who knew the countryside and were trained to kill. There have been several tv docu's about the subject and some of these guys now in their 80's still won't talk about it.
