Laura Trott just got her fourth Gold in the velodrome to become GBs most successful female Olympian ever. She has dominated the cycling and shes only 24.

Huge congrats to Jason Kenny who last last night stormed to GB record equalling six gold medals in a night of drama in the cycling at the velodrome . He did this in a brilliant crowd atmosphere and in front of his fiancee Laura Trott who had just won her fourth Gold medal .GB now stands at 50 medals overall and there is a possibility of more today. We stand in 2nd place behind the USA today but I think China may overtake us in that spot.

So glad to hear that USA athlete Abbey D' Agostoni went through to her final after her amazing sportsmanship after helping fellow athlete who fell during race.

Bolt through but Gatlin out, took his eye of the ball and paid a price. People divided as to whether hie exit is a good or bad thing.
 
Bolt is a pleasure to watch, he just glides along while everyone else is running on another level, struggling to keep up. His height is an advantage, that's for sure.

Can't wait until the 200 meter finals and the 4 by 100 relay finals, both mens and womens..................

Usain Bolt was just terrific again tonigh in the 200. The race was over at the 100. He has a chance for a 9th gold in the 4 x 100, which would tie him with Carl Lewis and the legendary Paavo Nurmi.

He is one of the great athletes of all time.
 
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, especially with US fans, but I don't enjoy watching the basketball because the US always wins. I will be rooting for them to lose. It doesn't hurt that Spain is playing them as I root for everything Spanish. Of course, I don't expect Spain to beat them and if not Spain, then the winner of the other semi.

I just don't think continued dominance by a team in a sport is good for the sport.
 
Spain is keeping it close. Only down by 6 at HT.

This was disturbing. The IOC needs to be purged of all it's officials and reorganized. They are one of the most corrupt organizations in sports. They should feed all of the relevant data into a computer and select permanent spots for both the summer and winter games. Kinda like they did when they developed Cancun as a vacation destination.
 
I didn't see the program but this ain't new news. Their conduct is similar to FIFA but at least FIFA is getting a little makeover. The best thing about the Olympics is that it brings under one roof (so to speak) many sports you might not watch. Even without the Olympics you can still watch the various meets and championships each sport carries out. However, most people don't.

While you might be in the minority, you are not alone. I feel the same way. The games are unwatchable and predictable. ESPN (the biggest NBA promoter outside of the NBA itself) doesn't even bring the Olympic basketball games up on SportsCenter until 30-40 minutes into the show.

The view of MARCA, the Spanish sports daily, is that the Spanish team acquitted themselves but the US had too much firepower. Coach K said it was a very difficult game. The rest of the world is catching up but is not there yet. Until then, the US will continue to dominate.

The one thing I didn't like is the US basketball team (both men and women) are not staying at the Olympic Village but on an ocean liner docked at the Rio ports. US Officials said it was too much of a distraction for them or some nonsense like that. If it's not too much of a distraction for other well known athletes, I hardly see it as a distraction for basketball players. Staying apart defeats the experience of getting to know other people.

In 1989, FIBA allowed professionals to play in the Olympics, the US had always sent amateurs while other countries were sending essentially professionals for years.

The US and the USSR were two of the countries who voted against allowing professional athletes being allowed to compete in the Olympics, but FIBA green lighted it.

You want professionals; hello dream team.

Don't blame the US for doing what FIBA instituted, ie, don't shoot the messenger.

As long as it's allowed, why not send your best athletes; for what, to keep it fair?

What next; every player on every team gets one of those shiny participation trophies?

I don't have a problem with the US sending their best players but seeing the US win every Olympics is boring. I'd like to see them lose so that it can restore some interest to the competition.

You want to see the Yankees win every WS? No, I don't think so. It remind me of the subtitle of the book Peter Golenbock wrote about the Yankees: "When rooting for the Yankees was like rooting for US Steel."
 
Being as we are in second place I wouldn't mind if the US lost just this once^&grin:salute::

We've seem extremes in USA Olympian behaviour this time around. On the bad side we had the ' Robbery ' ( why did that get so big in the first place?? ) and on the other hand the sublime sportsmanship of Abbey D'agostino who stopped to help a fellow athlete who appeared injured. That is the true Olympic spirit.

And the payback for Brazil hosting this is already beginning to bite, apparently there have been major cuts in spending for the paralympics , with some countries doubtful whether they can attend.

Pretty hard to believe the Olympics are over, seems like just yesterday I was watching the parade of athletes for the opening ceremony.

Have enjoyed the Olympics a great deal, the swimming events were great, as was the track and field and the gymnastics.

Also enjoyed the indoor and beach volleyball, although I could have done without the Brazilians whistling and jeering every time an opposing player was about to serve, that's really not the true spirit of the Olympics, more like something you'd see in the bleachers at Fenway park or Yankee stadium.

And the made up robbery story was beyond idiotic; people had safety concerns going into the Olympics, that trumped up story was not a good look for Brazil, I don't blame them for being pissed once it came out that it was a false story, what an idiotic thing to do.

It's on to Tokyo for 2020..................
