I agree that it’s jumping around from 1980 to 1990 to 2015 (the present) but I’m not having trouble following it, although what we’re following is unclear since we don’t yet know what happened in 1990 and how it affects in 2015. That, in and of itself, makes it odd.

I read an article when the season started that the negative reception for the second season was not completely justified in that the acting had been very good.

True Detective may be a series you have to rewatch to appreciate.

It probably doesn't help that the main character has dementia and can't even remember himself what happened. I'm reserving judgment but if the ending involves - spoiler - some mass conspiracy involving the rich owner of the chicken factory who abducts children and then bumps off witnesses that is going to be an implausible resolution.

It seems that the writers have set up this elaborate structure that took weeks to build and now they only have two episodes to finish it or the whole thing will collapse. I’m betting on the latter but I guess we will see.

This show is jumping around so much it is hard to keep track of the characters. Particularly when they suddenly show up decades later. It seems to be trending toward a letdown ending with some sort of implausible mega conspiracy. Some decent acting and scenes but the plot is almost as convoluted as Westworld.

Agreed its a little convoluted and jumps around a little, but I think that's part of the attraction for me personally. I'm tied of the predicable format and endings that most crime shows seem to follow these days. The Mrs thinks I'm just getting old and funny.^&grin

The story-line seems to be pointing towards a pedophile ring, but who knows??

I was a bit torn on the finale. The narrative resolution of the mystery was absurd but the story was compelling. Started to remind me of "A Christmas Carol" with all the "ghosts" visiting the main character. Give it a solid B.

SPOLIER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT It was different, I’ll give it that. And somewhat unsatisfying. But to the producers credit, they went for an unlikely, but simpler, ending than the wicked evil doer hiding in plain sight. I also really liked the very last scene, with Purple back in Nam, as he disappears into the jungle. My interpretation is that was an allegory of him disappearing into his own mind from the ravages of his disease.

Yes it was a decent ending. Not quite what I was expecting but satisfying.
Mark.

Yes, that was classic.

The Hayes marriage never seem fully resolved in the show. I suppose they both moved on; he left the force and she wrote other books, although what he did after that is never clear and intentionally so I guess.

For me, this show was less about the crime and more about memory and passage of time as you grow older. And how the truth gets distorted in that context. I recently revisited my old college for the first time in over twenty years (and it was another decade before that that I attended). I was amazed at how much had changed, how little I could remember from those days, how much that I thought I remembered that was inaccurate, and how some minor, random things that I did recall were still accurate. Aging is a strange and unsettling prospect for memory. The kids attending college there now were not even born when I graduated. Some of their parents might not have even been born. It was surreal. The ghost of the place that I had attended was still there but you had to look mighty hard to still see it.

I had almost forgotten about this show. Season 4 sound interesting:

HBO has revealed the official plot synopsis and title card for the fourth season of True Detective. The next season of the award-winning anthology series will be titled True Detective: Night Country and is set to star actress Jodie Foster and professional boxer Kali Reis.

“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace," reads the official synopsis. "To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

Sounds good.I really enjoyed the first and third seasons.

Looking forward to it. Except for season 2 this has been a very good series.

This looks like Silence of the Lambs meets Ice Station Zebra meets Dawn of the Dead. Nice transition from "Fargo" which is having a good season but with a lot of political tropes.

Saw the first episode. A very mixed bag. Like Twin Peaks meet The Thing but not as good. It also has a woke feminist undertone that is annoying. Similar to the current season of Fargo.

Yes it looks a little weird but I will give it a chance.

I'm in, I read somewhere it's only 6 episodes?

If true, I can invest 6 hours of my life in it, no problem.
