The Harwin British Tommy Soldier Doll arrived and is on display with a real British WWI Officer's uniform, a Steiff Tommy Doll and a Trench Art Tommy Doll:

I just obtained this very realistic doll, made during WWI or shortly thereafter by a Belgian refugee doll maker named Van Rozen, of General Joffre:

The WWI Era Algerian Spahi headpiece arrived. Now I only need the correct royal blue sarouel (baggy pants-it is presently on display with a green Moroccan Spahi Sarouel) to complete the uniform:

I managed to pick up a mint condition Harwin "Ally" Highlander Soldier Doll and this moth eaten Steiff WWI German Infantryman. I only paid $300 for the moth-eaten infantryman, and plan to strip him of his buttons and field equipment to restore an otherwise mint Steiff German infantryman missing his buttons and lacking field equipment.

Sounds like a solid plan, a sacrifice for the greater good. Always upgrade as condition is everything. -- Al

I picked up a 1910 Steiff German Infantryman Doll wearing a Dunkelblau Waffenrock Tunic and Feldmutz Cap:

Did Steiff include cockades on the caps for German dolls, Louis? If they did, is it something you look for when judging condition?

Prost!

Brad,

Yes. Most of the Steiff Soldiers I possess have the cockades on their hats, and it is a factor on condition.

Regards,

Louis

To members of the forum,
In addition to the more conventional toy soldiers and broad range of aircraft, AFVs, and artillery, have within the past seven months broadened my interests to another "endangered species" (equally addictive) of hobbies. Gotta love the choo-choos. If only I had room, I could ride my Lionel Hudson to the poor house in style. :wink2: -- Al

Brad,

I just managed to pick up a 2nd Empire Child's Cuirassier Helmet and Cuiriass, to display alongside my actual model 1879 French Helmet and Cuiriass:

On my trip to Antietam, I hit some of the local antique malls. While there was not a lot of quality (but overpriced) militaria like you find in Gettysburg, there were some excellent buys (I picked up two antique clocks for my wife's collection, which made my homecoming a lot more pleasant), including something I have wanted for a long time, a 19th Century miniature portrait of a military officer:

I also found these really interesting fully jointed wood WWI French Soldier Dolls, meant to be viewed from the side, which came with an old envelope identifying them as "Parmalee's French Soldiers":

I guess that must have been a fairly common portrait at the time, so its certainly possible. There is a stamp on the back identifying the portrait painter:
