Re: Poll Update

Interesting, while I realize less than 30% of the forum members have replied and there are many more collectors than members, I am surprised the ancients are only in the 10% range. If this is representative, where did all those sold out Conte Spartan sets go?

Re: Poll Update

They're in a 40 foot container, on a ship, somewhere in the Pacific.;)
Sorry, my bad.
LOL, good one. Of course, that does not cover the ones that were in stock everywhere before that ship went astray.:D;)

I just returned from the Texas Show in San Antonio where I purchased all the new King and COuntry Alamo series. Great figures. Now I am patiently waiting for the next batch to come out. I aslo found some other one of a kind Alamo figures and the WESTON south of the border series. Great stuff, great time. Cannot wait till next year but my wife tells me not so fast!:D

Poll Update

1st: 48 votes - World War II (European Theatre)

2nd: 30 votes - Napoleonic Wars

3rd: 23 votes - Medieval

4th: 19 votes - First World War

5th: 18 votes - American Civil War

An interesting poll this.

World War II with a total of (60) is still double the popularity all the Napoleonic Wars. However I'm surprised Vietnam and Modern conflicts polled so low, but I'm not surprised the Korean War scores so poorly.

The Napoleonic vote should be 31 and the Zulu vote should be 13 since I have since started collecting these and I cannot change my poll vote:);)

I mainly collect Zulu War figures from Little Legion.* I also have a few K&C German Tanks.

Although I do not collect ACW figures, I have been taking one trip a year to an ACW Battlefield with my father.

I have picked up a few books on the Zulu War and I have just started to read them.

Might the scores reflect or correspond roughly to the age of the forum members?

Prost!

Here's the latest tally with WWII still exactly double the Napoleonic score.

1st: 64 - World War II

2nd: 32 - Napoleonic Wars

3rd: 25 - Medieval

4th: 19 - World War I equal with ACW

5th: 18 - Other

Somewhat surprised the crusades is on top of ACW?

That's for sure. There are a number of ACW collectors in Australia and the ACW section of the Deetail range I had and sold off to buy 1/30 stuff went very quickly.

Considering that the ACW had this popularity in Australia I thought the ACW would have been a major section of the hobby in the USA and I was very surprised it has poled so low here.

I also thought that the forum- being America the ACW would rank highly here but it doesn't. Yeah! there are a few on here who collect/display the blue and the gray but nowhere near the WWII collectors and I would think the Naps would overtake the ACW as well.

I posted my above comment soon after your OP and I won't say it-Hell! Yes I will- I told you so :D.

You say you are a passionate ACW collector (which surprised me I thought I was the only one on here) But there lies the rub how do you define "passionate"? I too am very passionate about the ACW and collecting said figures (currently 1500 1/32-54mm metals from practically every manufacturer some now long defunct) subsequently, that's what I voted for. Now I also have a couple of hundred or so of FIW & Alamo figures that I am also very fond of but I did not vote for them as my definition of "passionate" did not fit my interpretation of the criteria of your poll.
Put another way, if the love of my life or someone else with the same authority said "Either your soldiers go or you do" I would willingly give up my Davy Crockett Tennesseans and my Roger's Rangers but I would put up with suffering needles in my eyes before I gave up any of my blue or grey troops. That's how I would define "passionate".

Therefore that's why I believe your poll is slightly skewed by giving an option of multi-choice because now you have most voters voting for more than one era. Now if they are all passionate about their multi choices as I am about the ACW then I stand corrected and duly admonished but I think I would still remain somewhat sceptical. For example I for one would have said Ron was the most "passionate" Napoleonic collector on the forum (as his abundance of uppercase posts tell us everyday) and I know he collects other eras but I had no idea that he was also "passionate" about the Spanish Civil War and the two or three Del Prado figures representing that era-if you see what I mean.

We collectors are today very fortunate to have such a diverse range of eras to indulge in and possibly voters have voted for a number of military periods they already have a few figures of and would like to add to their collections as indeed I would but I don't have a big enough bank-roll to do so. But are they truly being honest with being passionate with their multi-choice voting?

Having said all that your top three end results would most probably not alter because although every American trade TS survey ranks the ACW and WWII as the top two best selling toy soldier eras on the market today with Naps a close third, that however, is definitely not the case on Treefrog which is indeed a predominantly WWII forum with Naploeonic coming in as second. Now I have known that for twelve months just by reading most of the threads so did we really need a poll to confirm the blindingly obvious .

Interesting perspective, articulately expressed as usual Bob. I certainly did not respond with the notion of passionate that you express; on an needle to eye basis I would say none since none of these would have much appeal to me if I couldn't see them. Rather I took the term as one of its alternative definitions provides "...expressing, showing, or marked by intense or strong feeling...". Now in context, I think you can have an intense or strong feeling about any collection you intend to continue or expand; if you do not, why are you expanding it? Thus if you only acquired a couple of figures for a period or only dabble in it from time to time, it would not be included. But if you intend to represent multiple or signficant aspects of a period and enjoy learning about the history that relates to it, then I think it could be. I know I wouldn't have a 100 or so of anything unless it met my definition of passionate.;) It is interesting how interpretations can vary on that score.

You are undoubtedly right that a poll was not needed to know that WWII was decidedly the most popular here but I have found it interesting to see what other members are "strongly interested" in collecting besides those things mentioned in their usual posts. I guess one man's treasure is another man's trash; which is how Ebay got started I suppose.:D

In your case as I stated-I stand corrected and duly admonished-in future I'll stay well clear of any other such polls as I appear to be as thick as a plank in attempting to decipher them.

Whoa mate, no need to stand corrected, just a difference in prospective; you are just as much entitled to yours as I am to mine.:) We just both tried to explain why we each had the one we did.;)
