World Cup in Brazil (2 Viewers)

Terrible time for the defensive collapse. Rooney finally has his moment, England has the momentum, and then they let Suarez loose behind everyone. Too sad. -- Al

[Gerard is past his best the new players are not proven same story, disappointing to be a England fan

Such disappointing stuff from England:redface2:, poor passing, poorly timed dribbling/runs easy for the Uruguay defence and once again poor defence, they gave Suarez the last goal on a plate. Uruguay were much better on the ball and much better defensively and have Suarez and Cavani but they were on the ropes after England's goal, England suddenly where confident and passing the ball around with poise and suddenly they gave the game away...
IMHO England (and Portugal) are overrated (with all due respect, that's what I think of both teams).

Yes, he is not young anymore, he does pass the ball well but that's about it now. I liked Sturridge and Rooney but Sterling looked disastrously inexperienced and out of his depth I am afraid. And the central defence looked extremely shaky (they basically gave 2 goals away). They can still qualify though, but what for?

I don't know if you can chalk up the result to Greek stubbornness or Japanese incompetence but I think I fall more on Japanese incompetence, particularly when you have a man advantage most of the game.

Colombia Ivory Coast is a heck of a match!

Was there this afternoon, besides the great 2nd half of the match, the Colombian fans were fantastic in the stadium! Just got home from the pub where me and a few Brazilian friends went taking along with us a bunch of nice Colombians, to see the other 2 games on tv. Great game Uruguay and England! Can`t say the same about Greece and Japan... Today is a holiday here so we took full advantage of it!

Paulo,

I agree. This gets back into the TEAM mentality, which sometimes gets underrated in itself. The announcers and media focus so much on one player and put an enormous amount of pressure on that guy to lead the team. No one else plays for England except Rooney and likewise no one else matters in Portugal except Ronaldo. When Spain won, they won as a Team. When Spain failed...it was SPAIN that failed as team and not one individual player.

So, enter the Team Rooney (who I like) and the Team Ronaldo (my daughters like) and everything around the game revolves around them. Then they can't produce...JUST LIKE THE LAST WORLD CUP.

IMHO Teams that play as a Team are as follows:

South Korea- I know they are small potatoes in the cup, but they can out last any team on the pitch because of their fitness.
USA-They are not going to make it, but they do play unselfishly.
Germany-need I say more
Ghana-good lord those guys are good.
Chile-took down Spain in old school straight soccer fashion

There are others, but those are off the top of my head. So, I feel you Paulo.

I'm not a big soccer fan, but watched about 5 minutes of the game between Japan and Greece. I couldn't believe how many guys were flopping to the ground whenever they were touched. In the five minutes that I watched, maybe ten guys did this. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. The most interesting part of the game was the fact that the Japanese fans brought their own garbage bags to clean up the stadium after the game.

When it comes to acting, if the recent hockey playoffs are any indication, football players have nothing over hockey players, who must've thought they were up for the Academy Awards.

Well that might be true in the case of the Rangers. LOL. I just watched another five minutes during lunch and these guys are dropping all over the field. A guy touches them, they fling their arms into the air and drop to the ground like they have been shot. A ref rushes over. Angry words are exchanged. The game starts. No one scores. Repeat for three hours.

Swiss badly overmatched. 5-0, should be 8-0. Update: Swiss have now scored twice to save some of their pride. -- Al

Yeah, that's just wonderful................

Now Italy has to beat or tie Uruguay to move on; no pressure..............

I'm afraid you're in for a disappointment. Of course, I'm prejudiced as I lived in Uruguay :wink2:

Well, la Republica Oriental did make the semis in 2010 so I am confident!

Yep Brad, they are skillfull warriors that play with their hearts; certainly a force to rekon! 1950 is well engraved in our memories here....{eek3}{sm4}{sm4}{sm4}

Hard to tell Carlos how good they are. I don't think either team will seriously challenge for the Cup.

And as we all know European teams don't fare too well at World Cups held in Latin America.
