World Cup in Brazil (2 Viewers)

Australia goalkeeper had a nightmare against the Dutch

The Australians fought skillfully and bravely and left quite an impression. Cahill scored the most beautiful goal so far in the World Cup IMHO.

Cripes, the Spanish team is being thumped again. 2-0 at the half. If they lose this, they're toast. -- Al

Yes, I've just watched it in a pub in the middle of Wales !
The only Aussies in town, but the locals were cheering for us because the local team was also green and gold.

Watching a World Cup match while sitting in a pub in Wales is on my bucket list.

This is not an excuse but the Spanish season is long and Real Madrid, one of the teams that form the backbone of the Spanish team along with Barcelona, was playing for the Champions League until a few weeks ago. Not enough rest.

And they just did not play well. It's easier to be the hunter than the hunted.

Major changes coming. Probably a new coach too.

Well Spain (and Oz) are out and play each other in a final group game. Netherlands and Chile will play for 1st place in the group

Tomorrow it's do or die for England vs Urugway

I agree Brad, makes total sense... But still it’s hard to believe what we saw in these 2 games... Nobody would’ve ever imagined!

Think Austraila would of been better taking RFC goalkeeper ADAM FEDERICI

Ochoa - the goalkeeper for Mexico just played the best game I can remember ever seeing a goalkeeper play. Including several spectacular saves and one so amazing it belongs in the top 10 saves of all time. The ball had gone toward the extreme lower corner of the goal and went half way over the line but Ochoa got a hand on it. How he directed the ball past the back of the post and out was amazing.

Mexico used a strategy of 5 back defensively to stop Brazil offence and Mexico limited their offence to long shots hoping one would go under the bar.

A little late but on this one, entertaining nil nil match. Ochoa was great but also lucky, I remember a second half Brazil point blank header that ended up hitting him, he really knew nothing about it^&grin. Although México did a good job Brazil is clearly the better team and México's offence was limited to long range efforts (although dangerous ones). I expect Brazil to go through to the knockout stages and I can only imagine most teams praying not to meet them...^&grin

I'm sure he will play even with his sore knee. It could be his last World Cup. But he probably won't be 100%. And if the US beats Portugal, Ronaldo may sit out the 3rd game. Do you have tickets for one of the Portugal matches?

Yes Terry, fortunately I do. Portugal will play against Ghana here in Brasília on the 26th, and I intend to be there watching the game. I bought tickets for all the 7 games that will take place here in town. Couldn`t get one for the finals in Rio though...:redface2:

Well im happy with our performance considering its not our #1 national sport probably 4th or 5th most played here behind Aussie rules,Rugby union,Rugby league, cricket.
So if we beat Spain we have done well with a very young team even tho our best player won't be playing (Cahill) so my tip to win the lot will be Germany.

Further to my earlier point Carlos, one of the papers had this to say:

"Seven of Spain’s 23 players competed in the all-Spanish Champions League final a few weeks ago. Ten played in the semis. In the longer view, the team has been playing and playing since winning the 2008 European championship, and several of this World Cup team’s key players — including Casillas, Xabi Alonso, Andrés Iniesta, Cesc Fàbregas and Xavi Hernández — were on that squad.

Xavi, the key figure in their midfield is 34; Casillas is 33; Xabi Alonso is 32. After so many miles on their legs and so much pressure to stay on top, their bodies might have had enough of it. No one ever said it’s easy to be the best. Besides, a younger generation is waiting."

It is disappointing but would be much more so if they had been at their peak and lost.

I will miss seeing Iker patrolling the goal for Spain but at least I will be able to see him doing so for Real.

England looking unsteady on defennce. They don't seem to have the attacking pace they did against Italy. And of course two near misses by Rooney who has yet to score a World Cup goal.

Frightening statistic. Aside from one game in 1966, England has never won a World Cup game where they have given up the first goal.
