WW1 1914-2014 Centenary thread (1 Viewer)

It' s incredible that almost one century after the end of ww1 the place hasn't been cleaned, drained thoroughly yet {eek3}
I wonder how it is in the Volgograd and Kursk area...

There are many areas of the world where the waste of more recent conflicts still cause injuries and loss of life on a regular basis.

Much unexplored munitions is buried as civilization builds over former sites and just waiting there, almost like a ticking time bomb. At El Alamein, for example, you are not allowed to go out there without a guide for that reason.

Sure, El Alamein, Viet Nam.....But the little, rich, developed Belgium is not comparable to those countries....And it was almost 100 yars ago.

There was a survey carried out in France and Flanders about 6 or more years ago and the end result was that it will probably be another 100 years before it is a rare event to find a WW1 shell along the Western front and the ground will be safe. You see them piled up all along the front.

Terribly sad that this awful War still claims victims.

I also read that mine fields at Alamein are very dangerous because they shift with the sand.

That's an incredible story about Lawrence. Thanks for the article Rob.

Another amazing article Rob. I wonder if he's thinking of donating his collection to a place like the IWM.
