YANKEES Clinch AL East! (1 Viewer)

In the NFL, there is a salary cap. Teams in nearly ever city can expect that at some point they will have a good team. Some teams have terrible management, but that can't be helped. This has kept national interest in football at a high level.

In baseball, there is no cap. A very few teams are able to snag the majority of the good players. The smaller market teams may have a good run here or there, but the deck is stacked against them. I see fewer people interested in baseball, expecially from towns that are out of the running (and have been for years).

The real truth is that a number of the "small market teams" are owned by some of the richest men in the U.S. They are billions richer than the Steinbrenners. The difference is they do not give 2 hoots about their small market teams and choose to finance their teams on the cheap, while the Yankee ownership roll their profits back into fielding a competitive group. For fun, some of you ought do financial searches of all the baseball owners. and you will be amazed how much richer these guys are next to the Yankees. Better, folks should start whining about how cheap these other owners are rather than blame the Yankees for spending most of their fortune..to please their fans..Michael

Oh great, thanks for pointing that out, now the "Joe Torre" bashing will start again.

Thanks.

George for a Boston fan....you sure have a "thing" for Torre!

Michael don't let George S fool you, since he doesn't own a publicly traded

company his exact wealth isn't known just estimated. He bought the Yankee's

for 10 million and is the majority owner it is the most valuable sports franchise

in the world with an estimated value of between 1 & 2 Billion.:D

The "Boss" is loaded.:)

30 teams in MLB. 5 of the 8 playoff teams had payrolls among the top 9 in the league. All four teams in the second round are among the top 9 payrolls. MLB needs winners in NY, Boston, LA for the TV markets which supply the money. So this is a result they want - like the large number of steroid produced home runs. Good for ratings = money. They will not change the system.

1. New York Yankees $201,449,289
2. New York Mets $135,773,988
3. Chicago Cubs $135,050,000
4. Boston Red Sox $122,696,000
5. Detroit Tigers $115,085,145
6. Los Angeles Angels $113,709,000
7. Philadelphia Phillies $113,004,048
8. Houston Astros $102,996,415
9. Los Angeles Dodgers $100,458,101

John Henry owner Boston Red Sox net worth 3.1 billion
Larry Dolan owner Cleveland Indians 3.3 billion
David Glass owner K.C. Royals 323 million
Carl Pohlad late owner Minn. Twins 3.6 billion
Robert Nutting owner Pittsburgh Pirates 5.8 billion
Peter Angelos owner Baltimore Orioles 1.2 billion
George Steinbrenner owner N.Y.Yankees 1.3 buillion

I can play these number games all day..If your team is not competitive, it is because your owners are cheap..Michael

GS stake in the Yankees is easily worth the 1.3 Billion listed. He also owns

a ship building company and breeds horses.

My point being that the small market versus big market scenario not being fair is a false one. It is obvious that the small market owners are near as rich or better than the large market ones..They would rather screw their fans than try to field a competitive club. Michael

Why is it of the 4 major US sports that baseball is the only one with no salary cap? The players union? The owners? Is there collusion between the two to bleed the fan base to death? I dunno. I believe the NYY would be INSANE not to go after Halliday. Remember, you can never have enough pitching and who knows if Wang will recover. Pujols could always DH. Tex is too good a fielder to replace. -- lancer

That argument has ever merit except that of being true. If an owner in Pittsburgh or Minnesota dropped a couple hundred million into the payroll every year they wouldn't be rich very long. They are not going to get the return that a winning team in LA or NY will. These teams exist to give NY and LA someone to beat. And the owners in small markets benefit more from successful Yankee and Dodger teams than if their own teams win. That's the system.

Michael I would agree with you 100%! Many of the owners just want to be in

the club. Some like Joe Robbie in Miami and a few others have a dream or

vision of what they want to accomplish......and look what the tax man did to

him!

Others like H Wayne Huizenga just want to "Pump and Dump" and make a

buck. Just read how he screwed over the Robbie family!

That is why I like GS he loves the Yankees and trys to bring a championship

home every year! I hope his sons carry on the tradition!

I was reading a couple of articles online today and Roy Halladay said he wants to pitch for two teams, either the Mets or the Yankees.

Also, word out of St Louis is Pujols is not interested in signing an extention beyond 2009 and the front runners to land him are, you guessed it, the Yankees.

A rotation of CC, Burnett, Halladay,Chamberlain and Pettite/Wang/fill in the blank and a lineup with Pujhols in left and/or DH; might as well DOUBLE crown the Yankees after they beat the Phillies and cancel the 2010 season.

At some point, it really becomes a joke the way the Yankees conduct business; they are the Walmart of MLB and all the other teams are a mom and pop store in downtown Anytown USA that goes under as a result of Walmart setting up shop a mile outside of town.

No wonder why baseball is considered a joke of a sport and that fleabrain Selig is the king of court jesters.

George, Pujols still has 2 more years on his Cardinal contract. I really don,t see them letting him go. I do question his real age, he sure looks older than 29 or 30?

Hi Pete,

The salary cap in Football is a joke, if it wasnt then all the teams would be equal and you wouldnt get such lopsided results in games. But I dont want to get into a comparison of the two sports because they just arent the same.

Now the money issue dont forget that the Yankees pay big bucks in the revenue sharing tax levied on them by the agreement between the players Union and Baseball. They kicked in for 110 Million last season to the other teams in the league to off set the salary issue. Sure teams in what are considered small markets dont do as well in the free agent game but is that really the fault of teams like the Yankees and Red Sox? Its all on how much the owner and front office guys want to spend.

Now Halliday and Pujols might make sense to some folks but I dont think they are good fits for the Yankees especially with the giant salaries they will want. I can see an arguement for Halliday but I would hope that Cashman and the Front Office are looking for younger rookies and prospects to bring up in the system and not trying to buy another big arm like Pavano just to pay for two years of Dr bills and some really bad outings on the mound.

The idea that the Yankees are the Walmart of the MLB is just inane otherwise they would win it all every year and it would become boring. Also lets not try and say that the Red Soxs are a Mom and Pop organization, if they were would they have been able to spend 50 million just to get in to the same room Daisuke? So they may have been blue collar and mom and pop at one time but they arent now so please drop the whining about who spent this and that and lets enjoy the game.

Dave

Just because one of these owners has a large personal fortune doesn't mean that the business shouldn't operate on a sound financial footing. That will differ from market to market. As Doug said, if they spent their personal fortunes on their team without regard to staying within a budget, they wouldn't be rich long.

For all the reasons you stated, the NFL is the #1 sport in the US of A and baseball is in the toilet.

Just look back at the past few years in the NFL; the Dolphins, 1-15 two years ago, finished 11-5 and won the division last year, the laughing stock Cardinals made it to the Super Bowl, the 5-11 Titans from 2 years ago were 14-2 last year, the 5-11 Ravens from two years ago got to the AFCCG last year, on and on it goes.

Baseball needs a salary cap, and not the joke of a cap they have now where if you go over the set amount for total salary, you pay a luxury tax; gee, what a concept...........................

Don't worry George, if the Yanks win it all with this lineup, they are not likely to sign Halladay or Pujols. They only tend to make big free agent splashes when they don't win the title.

They might make a run at top center fielder or your left fielder (Bay) and let Damon go, and they will sign a good 3 or 4 starter, but assuming Wang is healthy, they are set at 1 (CC) 2 (Wang) and 3 (Burnett), and just need to worry about 4 (Pettitte?) and 5.

Why not? The rich get richer. Don't forget Damon and Shemp are free agents after this year, so they could replace them with Pujols as the DH and put Bay in left.

Bay is ending up in New York next year; you know it, I know it, they will either outbid the Red Sox or drive up the price.

Wang may be done too I heard, so Halladay is a natural fit.............

Gary

No, he has one more year, then the club holds an option for the second year; rumor is they are thinking of trading him while they still can for a raftload of talent..........

I just happen to think the man is a class act, carries himself with class, a credit to the game and to the sport in general.

He wears his heart on his sleeve, nothing wrong with that.

And I was at Fenway when he came back to manage his first game after his health troubles and he got a standing ovation and acknowledged the crowd with tears in his eyes; there wasn't a dry eye in the house that night, this being in Boston and he got that ovation from Red Sox fans.............................

Youre right George salary caps work,we have it over here on our AFL (Aussie rules) teams and it makes for a much more competitive comp you dont want to end up like british soccer teams owned by overseas interest etc etc.

Salary caps work better than the way things were in the 30's through the 50's; the team who showed up on the front porch first in Podunk Nebraska and got the signature of mom and pop John Q Public on the contract got the player.............................
