The new Kursk Tiger

DasReichTigerI.jpg

Schwere Panzerkompanie SS-Pz.Rgt.2 Das Reich, Operation "Zitadelle", summer 1943 by Vincent Wai

The print depicts the Tiger I #S33 of SS-Pz.Rgt.2 Das Reich during Operation "Zitadelle". This German tiger tank is sometimes called the "fortunate" or "Lucky" tiger because it carried a personal marking of a Chinese letter - "Fu" which means good fortune or luck."

He's not - that is supposed to be a Normandy Tiger - probably will have a WS number. (But I know Andy is just dying to get into the Eastern Front :cool::D ) At least with the German armour.

I do no remember any Cossack Cavalry-men in Normandy...

I meant my comment as a joke - Andy said he would not do Russian armour in the near future - but he is doing a lot of pieces that are Eastern Front German AFVs. This Tiger tank fought in the east at Kharkov and Kursk and don't believe it ever went to Normandy.

Think DDay -1

Great dio at the docks in England waiting to board various landing crafts.

I'll post in the morning.

In April 1943 Tiger 812 "Tiki" was renumbered 833. In May 1943 "S" (schwere) replaced "8" as the first digit so 833 became S33. The unit appears to have retained this numbering scheme for the remainder of 1943. In March 1944 the unit was detached from "Das Reich" and formed the cadre of the newly forming independant heavy Panzer Abteilung s.SS.Pz.Abt.102 (which did serve in Normandy). All Tigers for this unit were the late model and it used the standard German numbering scheme.

There is a bit more to the story of TIKI - an unverified myth from a journal entry about the commander of the tank, SS Hauptscharfuhrer Soretz. Supposedly, the Chinese good luck symbol on the tank was given by the commander's girlfriend who was the daughter of a Chinese diplomat (or more likely a German who was involved diplomatically with China) and the TIKI is an acronym for her name - Theresa-Katrin. In late 1943, the unit had lost its last Tiger (including TIKI) and the surviving personnel were transferred (detached) forming the cadre of s.SS.Pz.Abt.102. The unit was equipped with new Late model Tigers, one of which was named TIKI and supposedly was camoflauged with a yellow and brown pattern and had the number 812?? as shown in some artwork

The actual Tiger with the Chinese symbol and the number 812 changed to 833 then S33 did exist - it is in photographs. But the rest of the story has been debated as to whether it is true. The mystery has never been solved.

Is it my eyes ,or is the Tiger running gear not as clean as AK039(SL),the tiger looks great until the running gear or is this just a rough prototype, rushed thro to be displayed at the show?NB this is merely a personal observation and is not meant to be critical in any way or to anyone. ken

Good Question....It's a little difficult to tell from the pictures.... the quality of the tracks and wheels are questionable??......hopefully it's just the lighting of the photos......However.....Lot's of nice releases by K/C.

I dont agree, the difference is clear ,even from your posted pictures, like i said this is merely my personal observation,if you dont see it then thats fair ,may become clearer in the flesh, time will tell. ken

It's OK to be critical on this thread. I noticed the same thing and at first thought it was shadows. But with some better pictures, it looks like Russian mud - Andy's artistic interpretation? Which looks fine to me. I guess there is a little of Andy in every AFV :D:D:cool:

If someone could get a closeup of the tracks and also comment about the tracks having seen them in person, that would be great.

Agree with Ken. There is a lot more "trash" around the wheels, and the teeth on both the drive wheel and track have disappeared on the new Tiger. Still, this won't prevent me from getting one. I like it. -- Al

After the summer panther from a few years back any tracks look great!:)
the Tunisian tiger really set a high standard.
The new one looks good but the AK version does have cleaner tracks from looking at the pix. Still time will tell.
