There is thes pathetic cry from many saying some conversation here depresses them, and it is not fun anymore.

So lets look at this:

Someone starts a conversation about scale for instance and you have no interest in it, it depresses you....Well....Dont participate and only participate in conversations that uplift your spirit.

Someone starts a conversation about scale for instance and you dont agree, so you come back with a nasty demeaning remark and bring your cronies in, now you have a depressing conversation.

Someone starts a conversation about scale for instance and you respectfully disagree and conduct an intelligent conversation, bringing up good and bad points, now everyone grows and open their minds to new avenues that our wonderful hobby can present to everyone.

So you can see there is no need for there being an element of what has been termed "The forum no longer being fun due to subject matter" due to the topic being deemed unnecessary or not entertaining by those who are not interested..

The problem is you have to consider that the subject matter may be informative, entertaining and important to others, if not to you.

Alex,

Speaking for myself there are very few subjects in themselves that are depressing, its when they are shut down or hijacked on purpose that its annoying. I understand there was some aggro in your scale thread, but was that difference of opinion or was it deliberate trouble stirring?

How could scale, which was brought up by Maddicus, and then expounded upon into some legitimate overall scale discussion be deliberate trouble stirring.

But I know where you are going with this and I will not address your true intent until it actually comes out. . Alex

Alex,

I'm not going anywhere with it^&confuse I only asked because I saw there were heated exchanges on that thread but I did not think they were deliberate but merely differences of opinion that sometimes make feelings run high, but no problem I was just trying to answer your thread.

OK......That is the essence of what I am saying. We need to stay cool or dont get into the conversation at all, if it distresses you. I think it is that simple. We all need to be able to voice our opinion no matter how unpopular.

Yes that is totally true, I don't think anyone has a problem with any subject as long as they don't set out to insult anyone directly . There are lots of issues here that come around time and again that some find difficult, but if its done in an adult way it should always work. Subjects like the Holocaust for instance are by their very nature and the fact we have people here who lost family through it very controversial , but it can be discussed . Its about freedom of speech and respect for others. War by its very nature is bound to have difficult subjects. The bombing of German cities by Allied airforce's is another huge topic that will ignite passions on both sides, but as long as people don't set out to insult folk where is the problem?

YES !:)!:smile2:!......I am not being sarcastic. You just solve the problem, and it is that simple. As the old saying says "If you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

For me personally I enter technical conversations to gain knowledge from the many well informed members we have, then I use that knowledge to improve my scenes.

I bring up scale because it is current. There should be no stress at all involved in that conversation. I so appreciate the members who take the time to present their findings. Yet others find it stressful.

Everyone on the forum should have to read what you wrote above to qualify as a member

Thanks
Alex

And Alex its very easy. If I made the following statement ' I believe the bombing of Germany was vital to the ending of the war and therefore justified despite the terrible losses to German civilians' well I believe that is justified. But if I were to say ' Not only was the bombing of Germany a wonderful thing but all the civilians deserved to die a fiery death and I'm only sorry more were not killed ' Well that would be a grossly ignorant thing to say and highly offensive to not only any German member but to all really.

I enjoyed reading the thoughts on the scale thread, because for once I did not have a strong view either way so you can just enjoy it a bit more.

For better of for worse, scale invities hostiltity. However, it's not just scale but WW II in general, what many who frequent this board collect. Don't ask me why but you never see anything like this on the glossy threads, just collectors enjoying what other show. Since I have been a member (2005), WW II has alwasys seemed to create a lot of controversy. Maybe because the conflict is relatively recent in the history of the world. I really can't say.

I'm not sure about that one, we've had some pretty brutal dust ups around here regarding the American Civil War, oops, sorry, I meant The War of Northern Aggression.

Yes, that's true but they only happen rarely. WW II dust ups seem rather common.

Well lets all just agree on everything and close the forum,no need for discussion then is there....................^&confuse
No one is holding a gun to your head to post.

Are they WW2 dust ups or armour/vehicle detail / scale dust ups ?

Sometimes both Brett!^&grin

Don't think you see so many of the K&C V FL to and fro anymore though, do you think finally everyone got sick of that???

Rob,
I think we can thank the excellent work by the Mods. In addition so many are now buying multi brands it is all blurred. I did disagree with a comment by Firebat about it being K&C supporters and everyone else. Just look at the Australian collectors on this forum and most are actually multi brand collectors. Those that only collect one brand are usually just sticking to a theme such as Lighthorse or say Zulus. As for armour a lot of mixing going on (ie. TomNT, Villagehorse and Wayne WA to name a few).
Dont want to sidetrack this thread.
Brett

Alex..

You make very good points and, you are right that people should be allowed to discuss subjects they want to and if others have no interest or, are bored with them they should hunt out threads where they can have ''fun'' as has been said nobody forces anyone to read the posts its as easy to skip them than actually read them and, then post you actually dislike them or similar.

That's the bizarre part for me.

Brett,

Yeah I really just meant that it appears (I guess I could regret saying this even as I do) that all the rubbish that was thrown at people on both sides of that argument seems to be a lot less nowadays which is very good to see. And I agree that with the arrival of companies like CS and more recently TG mixing is much more achievable if people wish too. I must say that although there are great concerns about prices in the hobby , in terms of choice for the collector its a great time to be collecting.

Fun is what you make it and if you look arguments you will find them. If you want to find enjoyment you will find that as well, in spades. Just look at Waynepoo's scenes.

Yes, this is a place for opinions but sometimes there can be too many. Arguments for arguments sake is not productive. Sometimes you have to know when no to say something and just let it go. Invariably, that will produce less friction, more enjoyment and a heightened degree of harmony.
