Capt Hubert Dilger moves his 12 pounder Napoleons into battery position left of the Carilse Road in support of Lt William Wheeler's 13th NY Light Artillery Battery of 4 rifled guns around 3pm July 1st. They engage Doles Brigade advancing against Von Gilsa and Ames brigades and Jones' Confederate battery.

The on rushing Confederates forced the two batteries to withdraw by prolonge, firing as they retreated towards Gettysburg.

Diorama notes: Capt Dilger was awarded the Medal of Honor for covering the Union retreat at Chancellorsville. He later fired the shot that disembowled Lt Gen Polk during the Atlanta campaign. Rifled guns are by Troiani, WB and FL, Napoleons are WB. Figs are WB and two of FL. Dilger's Battery had 6 guns, but I only have enough canoneers to man eight pieces, and enough space. Dio board is by Ken Olsen, who also modified two fig sets for me. Chris

Chris

Great setup. I'm surprised you left out which state Dilger's battery was from.

In any event, nice work on the dio. Capt. Dilger is my favorite artillerist of the war.

Outstanding work, Chris. A most impressive number of guns and artillery figures. -- Al

Well done and nicely told. I like the two figures covering their ears. I would imagine that artillery men must have suffered from a higher incidence of deafness due to their occupation.

Hi Chris,
A very nicely done dio, got to love the cannon being fired though:) great work there as well, hope to see some more photos in the near future...Sammy

P.S. fear the turtle!!!! down goes Duke!!!

Brilliant depiction Chris especially that panoramic scope you've achieved in one of the shots. A good match too of the road and soil to cover the bases. And those couple of conversions have been masterfully executed.

Excellent Chris {bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

Once again Chris very nicely told, staged and photograph{bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

Very nice Chris. I like seeing the WB and FL figures together . . . they seem to work well together.
:smile2: Mike

A really beautiful dio!!! Great job. Liked the way the bases were masked and blended into the scenery.

Thanks for all the comments and like votes guys. Really appreciate the great feedback. Took a long time to collect and put this one together. I hear we're getting a couple of artillery figs related to Gettysburg and of course limbers with teams. :smile2: Should make for a great future Gettysburg Chronicle dio. Chris

Nice diorama Chris, very nice presentation.

This area of the battlefield is often overlooked, thanks for addressing it.

I used to be an outside sale rep for an industrial supply company, my sales manager was named Paul Dilger, the great grandson of Hubert Dilger himself.

Chris...excellent job...that is one of the best artillery crew scenes I have ever seen...

George, that's cool that you got to meet his great grandson. Thanks for the comments. Chris

On one of my trips to the battlefield, I took several pictures of the monument dedicated to his great grandfathers battery and mounted them on a nice frame and gave it to him, he was pretty emotional about it, which was pretty cool actually...................
