Nats got a win in NY last night that was almost a 'must' win for them. More important than the win was the way they did it, coming from a 6-1 deficit in the 8th inning with a 6-run rally, adding 1 in the 9th and winning 8-6. The Nats actually got a couple of hits with runners in scoring position during the rally, a good sign as well. It is a tough loss for the Mets, but they are too hot to let it slow them down so the Nats have to take the win and build on it and hopefully get another win in NY during this series. The comeback win is the first real life this club has shown since the first 4 games of the season, and even then they looked dead up until the 8th inning rally. Hopefully the Nats have awakened. It's a potentially season crushing loss. They should have put them away and had the Nats lost they might have been done for the season. You can't blow a five run lead in the 8th. They gave the Nats life. I just hope they don't get swept but it wouldn't surprise me if the Nats returned the favor.
It reminds me of a loss to the Cardinals in 1987. The Mets were rolling and the Cards reeling. In the first game of the series, the Cards looked dead until Terry Pendleton hit a HR to tie the game. The Mets lost and they never recovered.

O's offensive woes continue. Another good game from the O's SP, but no joy as the offense continues to stall, resulting in a 4-2 loss and a 5-12 record. This offensive slump is now 40 games old, going back to September 7th, last season. The O's are 10-30 in the last 40 games, averaging a mere 2.9 runs a game with a BA of .214. Hard to win games when you don't score. And 40 games is no small slump, it is a problem. Don't know the answer. -- Al

Who are the 4 potential free agents whos contracts are up after this year; Manny and Jones are two, right, who are the other two? Way too early to think this way, but that said, if they are floundering at the trade deadline, do you think they'll deal them away or try to resign them in the off season?
George, I think the other 2 big ones are Britton and Brach, the bullpen aces. I don't see how they can afford to sign them all. I think Machado is history, in any event. I would think Jones and one of the 2 bullpen guys will be kept, if possible. If the current tailspin continues, all bets are off and I would think anyone could go. -- Al

The same for the west coast orange and black. Cueto returned from the DL last night and promptly held Arizona to 2 hits. The only problem is that Arizona 1 hit the Giants behind a complete game from some guy named Corbin. The Giants lost 1-0.
All of that with a $200+ mil plus payroll. Ouch.

Glad Cueto is back and seems to be the Cueto of old. Tough loss, for sure. Giants have only scored 42 total runs in 16 games so if it weren't for decent pitching, the Giants could be buried already, but they're still in it and, hopefully, the hitters will heat up eventually. They just need to stay close until Bums and Jeff get back. They have also played 7 1-run games already which shows they are hanging in. The Giants have Pence, McCutchen, and Longoria, who are currently not hitting. Those 3 are too good not to come around at some point. The team just has to weather the storm until all the pieces fall into place. Hopefully. -- Al

The Red Sox scored early and often last night off of the Angels newest sensation from Japan, Kamikaze Oh or whatever his name is, whatever funky Japanese pitch he throws got rocketed into the outfield and he was done after two innings.
Their relief pitching didn't do much better, some tomato can named Bard gave up four home runs that if you strung them together would go from Anaheim to Kamikaze's back porch in Japan.
Scocia didn't look happy, but does he ever look happy, he's the only guy I know who's got a pissed off look on his face 24/7/365. And my advice to Mike would be try a salad, his bulbous head must do a number on the neck holes of his finely knit baseball jerseys, probably throws each one out after one use.
WAY too early yet, but the RS have a very good hitting line up, the addition of Martinez was huge, they are raking and pitching lights out as well, Price and the bullpen gave up one run.
Oh and the MFY's lost to the MAAArlins last night, they got shelled 9-1 and Stanton went hitless, he's getting booed off the field in NY.
Tough crowd those MFY fans.

Good lord. O's v Tigers just underway and there can't be more than a few hundred fans in the stands. To be fair, the game was a night game but was moved to 1pm because of impending bad weather in the Detroit area. Still, it looks and sounds like a big echo chamber... :rolleyes2: -- Al

To be honest I would rather have shaky pitching than cold hitting. You can win a game 10-9 or 9-8 but you will never win if you score 0 runs.

Nats got the 2 of 3 in NY that we had to have to stay viable. Nats won one they should have lost (Mets bullpen meltdown), lost one they should have won (Nats bullpen meltdown), and just won one in a 'normal' game. So we'll take the series win and try to build on it in LA against the Dodgers and in SF against the Giants, which won't be easy in either case. -- Al
The Red Sox are freaky hot. They are playing another hot team, the Angels, and they are chopping them up like so much hamburger, 10-1 and 9-0. The Sox are going to run away and hide at this rate. They won 93 games last year with just about everyone having a down year as crazy as that sounds, their young talent did not take the next step last year.
So far this year, they have, not to mention the pitching, specifically the starters, has been lights out, Porcello is 4-0 with a 1.40 ERA.
Baseball was, is and always will be about pitching, not how many guys in your line up can hit the ball 5 miles.

Betts is on a tear. His swing is almost perfect. Not to mention the fact that he seems like a really humble guy. In the post-game interview he gave his teammates and coaches credit for his recent home runs while working in a few compliments for his opponent.
Twas a massacree. Not awarding them a WS title yet, but the Sox sure look like a sunami on the way to flatten the rest of the AL. They have been impressive. -- Al
