2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (2 Viewers)

With the way the leagues are set up now, 15 teams each, there is no other option (unless you add expansion teams).

RUT-RO. Word out of B-more is that closer Zach Britton has gone on the 10 day DL with a left forearm strain. Hopefully, Brach and O'Day can fill in for those games. -- Al

That's bad news. Chris

O's bat around in the 8th with 3 HR'S including 1 foment Machado. 11-1 bottom of the 8th. Chris

O's cruise 11-4, behind Bundy. Nats managed to win also, despite the bullpen's best attempt to blow another game. Harper's walk-off 3 run dinger saved the Nats. -- Al

Just catching up with the world today, sounds like only a minor visit to the DL for Britton, and I do believe the O's have a good enough bullpen to operate with success until Britton returns, or they'll just have to hit more home runs!!!:):)

There are a hand few of everyday players that I would pay to see play and Harper might be at the top of the list along with Trout and Céspedes.

The Giants are in last place in the NL West. They have scored 59 runs and given up 60. They are 20th in the league in ERA and 17th in home runs allowed with 14.

Of all the the things that were going to ail this team, pitching was not supposed to be one of them.

That is interesting as pitching has also been a concern for the Nats, specifically, the bullpen. Granted, the Nats are 7-5 and tied for first, but the bullpen has cost them 3 of those games. The Nats have yielded 13 Hr's, 3 by the starters, the other 10 by the pen. We don't have a starter with an ERA over 3.50, yet the team ERA is 4.56, higher than SF's 4.22. SF pitching will come around, Bums is just having bad luck, Cueto looks good. Don't know about Samardzija, though. Do know that the Nats are going to have to fix their bullpen if their present trend continues, and I'm not sure losing Melancon is the reason why. -- Al

Al:

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Samardzija has become a huge question mark and I feel sorry for Bumgarner as he is doing all he can on the mound and at the plate!

I don't often complain about umpires as there is no point, but the plate ump in last night's Nats/Braves game, C.B. Bucknor, is horrible. Bad calls all night, on both teams. He called a Nats batter out on a called third strike that was so bad the pitch got past the catcher and went to the wall. On the final out of the game, the final swing, in fact, he ruled a foul tip that didn't happen, giving the Braves another swing with the bases loaded. It was a travesty of a call as replay showed the batter missed the ball by a good 6 inches, not even close. The Nats had to strike the guy out twice to end the game. Bucknor is just consistently bad and it's a wonder why MLB doesn't do something about it. -- Al

Here is the headline from Yahoo Sports:

"This call from umpire CB Bucknor might be one of the worst in history"

Jason, I have watched the replays of the 'foul tip' call in the 9th, and I believe the batter missed that ball by a good 12", if not more. Absolutely terrible call and now Bucknor is claiming he 'heard' the foul tip. Jeesh. It would have been a disaster had that extra swing cost the Nats, but as it is, it is just another bad call to be ignored by MLB. -- Al

Ha!!!!!! Last week I was ready to toss Ubaldo to the sharks and today he throws a 2 hitter into the 8th!! Unreal....that dude is the epideme of hot \cold. But great win none the less.

Sammy,

That's why it's risky to judge a player or a team on a small sample size. Tomorrow most teams will have played 16 games, only 1/10th of a season. I think the absolutely smallest reliable sample size in baseball is 1/4th season. Look at your team and individual players' stats after 40 games, and then you might be justified in hoping or worrying about how they are doing. Right now my team looks great. For the first 5 games of the season they looked awful. They are not as bad as they looked over the first 5 games, or as good as they looked after the next 10. I will have a look at how the young players are doing around July 1st. If they are playing competitive baseball through that much of a season then I will let myself hope for meaningful baseball through September.

Wait, now he claims that he heard it? That just makes it worse.

Hard not to be enthusiastic about Harper's season so far. Went 4 for 4 with a BB (Solo Hr, GS, 2b, and 1b) with 5 RBI's tonight in a 14-4 win over the Braves. Harper is now batting .404, with a .516 OBP, and slugging .846. He also has 6 Hr's and 18 RBI's in the Nats 14 games. He's having a decent April. -- Al

Can't believe Bums bad luck. He gives up 1 run and takes his 3rd loss. This has to change at some point simply because he's too good to let this kind of luck get to him. Giants continue to hang in and this streak of bad luck will change. It is, after all, an odd year. -- Al

Al:

A loss is a loss, but losing like that really hurts. The one run Bumgarner gave up was on an infield hit. He is a tough guy who has earned the title of workhorse but you have to start to wonder anout the toll these loses might take on his psyche more than anything else.

-Jason

A deeper look inside the numbers only makes things worse for Bumgarner. In his 3 losses the Giants have scored 2 runs. So even if he had pitched 3 shutouts he would only be 2-0 with a no decision.

Ouch.
