2019 Baseball season (3 Viewers)

Jose Altuve is a freak of nature...
he boggles the mind...
at a minute 5' 6"s tall...and 165 lbs....
he hits well above what one would expect someone would with his small stature...

he had 31 HR's regular season this year...
and now has 5 HR's post season...
he missed about 25 regular season games due to injury...
so he probably would have had more than 31 HR's regular season...

it's always been amazing to me that he held several batting titles...
for such a little guy to have so much power is pretty crazy...

Yordan Alvarez (Houston's DH)...has been a complete bust in post season...
regular season...he played only 87 games...
but had 27 home runs and 78 RBI's...
he was crushing the ball...
I think he has 1 hit in his last 23 at bats currently...
now that's a slump!
Hinch finally pulled him last night and put in Diaz to DH...
the Astros offense has been terrible in the post season...
Mike, the Astros have a history of mighty mites. Back in the 60's and early 70's they had a pair of players who were of smallish stature but were huge offensive dynamos. One was Joe Morgan, 5'7", 160 lbs, who hit .271 and had 268 Hrs, lifetime. The other was Jimmy Wynn, aka The Toy Cannon, who was 5'10", 160 lbs, who hit .250 with 291 lifetime Hrs. Small and powerful seems to be a Houston trademark.:wink2: -- Al

Judge is so big and powerful...
he almost looks illegal...^&grin
while I always feared his bat...
I was duly impressed with his glove and arm...
NY had a heck of a season...
103 wins...went to the ALCS...
maybe Yankee's fan feel disappointed...
but that's a great season by any standards to me...
all they need is a shutdown starting pitcher...
that team will be competitive for years if they can keep them together...

Al...
I remember Joe Morgan...
I had to look up Jimmy Wynn...:redface2:
cool nickname...The Toy Cannon...

Al...
I have watched you live and breathe baseball for a couple of years on here...
I know it's your life blood and you are very passionate about it...
I'm absolutely delighted that your Nats made the WS...
should be some good entertainment!

Al...

this is when you should have bet them...
50 to 1 odds...

The Nationals are making the franchise's first appearance in the World Series and had to overcome a disappointing start to the season to get there. Washington was 19-31 on May 23, with its World Series odds drifting to 50-1 at some sportsbooks. The Nationals caught fire in the second half of the season to earn a wild-card berth in the National League. They outlasted the Milwaukee Brewers in a wild-card game, then upset the Dodgers in a National League Divisional Series. They swept the St. Louis Cardinals to win the NL pennant and advance to the World Series, where they're one of the largest underdogs in recent years.

Thanks, Mike. Glad that the Astros made it, as well. The best should be there. I have been a MLB since 1960 when the M&M boys opened my eyes and I have followed it ever since. I hope to see a very entertaining series, even if it isn't the one the networks would have liked. I'm sure NY v LA is what they all wanted but they got the Mid-Atlantic v the South. One thing for sure, TV ratings in DC and Houston will be high. -- Al

Mike, it's ironic that due to health issues I literally missed the first month of the season and only slowly got back into the game in May, right when the Nats hit their nadir. The Nats and I kind of recovered together. At the very least, they sure helped me recover, but I sure missed the window to place that bet. -- Al

Al...
the Nats winning for you was good therapy...^&grin
and you're right...
they started off really bad...
that article said they were 19-31 in May...
most fans might have thrown in the towel at that point...
so yea...^&grin...a huge comeback for both of y'all...

Congrats Mike. I have some bad news though. I'm picking the Astros in six. That will probably put the jinx on them. The Nats have been red hot, but the Astros pitching is just too good and home field is a bridge too far. The Astros are the better team. Of course, I said the same thing about my Dodgers! I'm pulling for the Nats due to my proximity to DC and I always felt sorry for the long-suffering Washington Senators fans.

ty Doug...just enjoy the WS...that's all any of us can do...

this should be against the law...

I usually sit in section 127...

the tickets are usually about $100 per person...

I just looked out of curiosity...

Game 1 WS Oct 22...StubHub

section 127...

$1,327.09 per person...

standing room only...

$450.00 per person...

you gotta be kidding me...

That’s about what I’d expect, based on my experience with the 2015 playoffs. Did you check SeatGeek, not that I’d expect any material difference.

Congrats to Mike and the Astros, what a win, what a game that was.

Normally I'd be sarcastic and come up with digs about the Yankees, but truth be told, 100% serious; I'm starting to feel sorry for them.

Since 2000, they're 1-2 in the World Series, including a soul crushing loss to the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the ninth inning in the 2001 WS in game 7, they then lost in 2003 to the Marlins after an epic comeback in game 7 of the 2003 ALCS vs the Red Sox.

Then in 2004, the greatest collapse in baseball history, up 3-0 in the ALCS, then proceeded to lose 4 strait to the Red Sox, propelling them to their first WS win in 86 years.

The Red Sox went on to win another WS in 2007 and after the Yankees failed make the playoffs in 2008, they spend a quarter of a billion dollars on free agents and won a WS in 2009 vs the Phillies.

Since then, they have lost the 2017 and 2019 ALCS to the Astros, blowing a 3-2 lead in 2017 and then last nights nutpunch loss.

They are now the Red Sox pre 2004 short the 2009 WS win, they lose now in nutpunch fashion, crushing losses that will leave a mark forever.

And I think they are going to back up a brinks truck this year on free agent pitchers, probably go after Cole and another front line starter, although to be honest, pitching to me was not the problem in the ALCS, their bats went silent, which is what happens when you face good pitching.

Will be interested to see what they do this off season...……………..

Brad...
I really wasn't planning on going...
I was just curious...

I have actually found that I like watching the game at home much more...
replay...fast forward...rewind...comfort...etc...
not to mention $$$...
but this is absolutely ridiculous...
what family can afford this luxury...

I can hear it now...
"Honey...let take all the kids to see the Astros"...
"Okay...get 5 tickets for all of us"...
"OMG...I just checked...we better watch it on tv...we can go to Europe cheaper"...

I almost feel like this is gouging...
14-15 times regular price...

I didn't notice...
but...my brother in law told me he noticed quite a few empty seats behind home plate Game 5 at NY...
this might be why?

ought to be against the law...
how can they justify this?

Section 119...right behind home plate...
$2,450.50 per person...
if you act quick...
you can still get one...
there are 8 left...

shameful way to treat your year long fans...

Mike, it’s just the way it is in the post season. The tickets go to the companies, banks, etc. Back in 2000 I was lucky enough to share a season ticket plan with a few friends and I got to go to a playoff game and a WS game. I always enjoying going to the ballpark. It’s a special feeling and fun being with other fans, even Yankee fans.

Al...

here is a good article you might enjoy...
lots of stats on the pitching and batting of the Nats and Astros...
I had no idea your starting rotation is so good...
kind of make me question the Las Vegas odds on the game...

Thanks for the link, Mike. It was an interesting read. One thing for sure, to have a chance, the Nats have to get 7 innings from our starters and keep the bullpen out of the game. Houston is very formidable, both pitching and hitting, and I can only hope our pitching rises to the occasion. It will be a blast just playing in the WS. -- Al

agreed on the pitching...I feel the same way...gotta keep the pitch count low...no walks period...and while of course I want them to win...it's all gravy from here on...couldn't lose to a nicer guy...

I feel the same, Mike. I want to win but I hate to see a friend on the short end and if the Nats lose to the Astros, I will be disappointed but not crushed as the Astros are your team. -- Al

Mike:

Big time congrats on the win and getting to the Series. I connected through Houston last night and the airport is awash with Astros gear!

As mentioned before I am an Astros fan by geography. Also, as mentored before, I am also a fan because of the way they built their team. They tore it down completely and told their fans that they would build a champion via the farm system and add free agents along the way. I rolled my eyes and thought it was just another franchise shining on their fans. I was wrong.

By golly, I believe it is GAME DAY. The moron TV weatherman on Channel 5 here in DC is such a huge baseball fan that he is happy to report that although the forecast in DC is for rain, the weather in Houston is going to be perfect for Game 1 tonight. I can't stand it. :rolleyes2: -- Al
