69th Annual MFCA Show and Mart-live reports (2 Viewers)

That is a christmas set cook - the christmas pudding is so obvious, I can smell the brandy......................

Yup, agree, but I believe he is an earlier version due to the age of all else in the collection I bought him in.

I have the later pudding cook set too.

Thanks!
Tom

How was the Bill Horan Retrospective ? Was there alot of his work on display ? Saw his ''Last Stand at Gandamak" years ago at the MMSI show in Chicago. It was outstanding!

Great show report, Brad! Considering how busy you were at the show, I don't know how you found time to do it all. But, I'm glad you did. I enjoyed meeting you and now have a face to put with the avatar.

I had a great time - spent too much, drank too much, ate too much, my back was killing me from walking, bending and standing, my throat was hoarse from talking - all in all a very fine show.

I don't have a picture of the set, but the display took up a 4'x8' table. I do believe there's a picture in the ones that Nick Infield took of the exhibits, but either way, I'll post one as soon as I can find one. Greg DiFranco wrote a "foreward", if you will, that was printed and displayed with the display, too, and I want to get the text of that, to include with the pictures.

Bill did include about a dozen of his baseball figures, portraying the greats of the game from around 1900 through the 40's. Apart from the omission of Grover Cleveland Alexander, which, as a Phillies fan, I'd like to have seen ;) , those figures are a real treat for those of us collectors who are also baseball fans.

Prost!

Thank you very much, Pat! I was glad to meet you in person, too, and thanks to all the guys from your club, too (for the uninitiated, they make up the "Hawaiian Shirt Mafia" of the Wings & Wheels IPMS club), for pitching in to help tend bar in the hospitality suite, special thanks to Don Johnson, mixmaster extrordinaire! And I know what you mean about being hoarse-I used a whole pack of Ricolas Saturday and Sunday ;)

Prost!
Brad

PS-Dennis Sosna and Doctor Joe both visited Scott yesterday, he's awaiting some tests today. I'm going to call him when I get home tonight and see how he's doing.

Got home late last night, back at work now, I'll post my remaining photos tonight.

I did get to see Andreas on Saturday, vielen, vielen Dank für die superben Bilder, besonders die aus der Ausstellung! I'm with you on the Varus diorama, it's outstanding. The Gandamak diorama is similar in quality. My buddy Dennis Sosna is compiling the sets, and if he ever finishes it, I'll get him to post some pictures.

Again, it was great to see everyone, and George, thanks especially for your support and kind words!

We do have pictures of all of the exhibits, too, and as soon I get the collection of photos, I'll post them for everyone, along with a list of the awards.

Thanks, everyone!

Brad

I look forward to your pictures Brad .Thanks for all the hard work you put into this.

You are welcome and thanks for putting in all the time to make this such a great show............

Brad (the Baron) already mentioned the details about Bill's display. I took a couple of pictures of the baseball figures that Bill made. Next to being a Rev War buff, I am also a baseball historian in my spare time. The photos don't do Bill's work justice but I thought to post them anyway.

I'm sorry I missed those ball players because they look fantastic. The one of Three Fingered Brown is spot on.

Do yourselves a favor, and pick up Bill Horan's book. It is filled with amazing pictures. His ACW figures are amazing.

Revwarbuff, Thanks so much for posting those pics of Bill Horan's ballplayers. Those are just amazing little portraits.

Andanna and all others who photographed the show, Thank you show much for taking the time to take and share your photos. I wish I could have attended, but maybe it's best that I did not...I'm still trying to financially recover from the Westcoaster, and I know I would have gotten in trouble with Thor and Ken and Eriocka there. Unbelievable stuff, and thank you all again for your time and efforts.

The Vardus ambush diorama is staggering Andanna. I was spellbound by your photos. What a beautiful piece of art. Someday I hope to see it in person. I'm just blown away by that. Love the scene with the Roman fallen in the stream trying to regain control of one of the three eagles.

Thanks for the pictures. The ball players are unbelievable. I love baseball history, especially the early 20th century players like Mathewson and Johnson. These figures are just great. My brother would love the Williams. Thanks. -- Al

Hi, all! I didn't get finished moving the rest of my pics last night, but I'll post them tonight. I also have some to post for George (Warrior), some shots of his dioramas, so you can see what you missed :D I have to say, I never really thought about the diorama mats before (Build-o-Rama), but to see them in use, in person, you really see what you can do with them.

PS-an update on our friend Scott Hershbell, who is another member of the show committee, and my co-bartender. He collapsed Friday a little past noon while working at the admissions table, and was taken to the hospital. The EMT's said he had a seizure, but tests proved negative, and his own doctor said it was exhaustion. He checked himself out of the hospital yesterday morning, and will be back running his landscaping company tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your prayers/well-wishes on Scott's behalf. He's a member here, too, so he'll be checking in.

Prost!
Brad

Brad,

I didn't know that Scott had a medical, possibly life threatening emergency but it's good to hear he's recovered. Please give him our best.

Regards,

Sure thing, Brad! Actually, it was just after we had all met, that someone found me to let me know someone passed out at the table. When I got back, I found out it was Scott, and they had already taken him away.

Hi, everyone! I've got the last of my pics, plus George's, loaded to a very obstreperous Photobucket, so here's the rest from Saturday. These represent some photos I took in the exhibition.

Alan and Marion Ball's Nelson diorama:

31Nelsondio1.jpg

It was mounted on a little rotating stand; here's a side view, showing both sides of the scene:

32Nelsondio2.jpg

and from the other side:

33Nelsondio3.jpg

Alan said he wanted to give the boarders' perspective, leaping down on the enemy, but also the view from below, the "Oh, sh-t!" moment, as he put it.

This was an interesting little shadowbox:

34WatchingTV.jpg

and a tribute to Frank:

35Zappa.jpg

I liked the expression on this figure, Marshall Tallard at Blenheim:

36ACruelMisfortune.jpg

This was a clever piece, American Indian whalers, called, "The Strike":

37TheStrike.jpg

and an excellent Roman Legionary:

Some more of the exhibited figures. A GI in Vietnam, and a deep sea diver in 54mm:

39GIinNamandDeepSeaDiver.jpg

This was a really nicely executed piece in 1/6th scale, "One Small Step":

40OneSmallStep.jpg

An example of the armor dioramas, entitled, "Get Out of the Car!":

41Getoutofthecar.jpg

An example of the really great work in flats that we see at the show, a Prussian Cuirassier from Frederick the Great's army:

42PrussiancuirassierSYW.jpg

and an exquisite fantasy flat:

45Fantasyflat.jpg

though I must apologize for the reflection on the glass protecting the figure!

Here are some models from the Ordnance categories. A Fokker Dr. I:

43FokkerDrI.jpg

and a Supermarine Walrus flying boat:

44SupermarineWalrus.jpg

A Marine CH-53 Super Stallion, modelled by Joe Wagner from my IPMS club, the Delaware Valley Scale Modelers:

48JoeWagnersSuperStallion-gold.jpg

If I remember correctly, he took the gold in his category. Also by Joe, a P-39Q (kit by Eduard) in 1/48:

More from the Ordnance category. A diorama of an M3 Stuart in North Africa:

46M2inNorthAfrica.jpg

And this dio, of a Deuce-and-a-half, I believe it is:

47Deuce-n-a-halfdio.jpg

This diorama, of a Jagdpanther in an emplacement, is by Paul Keefe, also of the DVSM:

50PaulKeefesJagdpanther.jpg

I think Paul had an offer to buy this piece, before the judging was even finished.

and one more figure, a paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne in Normandy:

5182ndAirborneNormandy.jpg

Those were all the pictures I took, because I really wanted more to get pictures of people around the show. There are already much nicer photos posted, such as Andreas', and more will be available in the next couple of days.

Next up, some of George's (Warrior's) table displays...

Here are some of the displays George had on his tables, showing the different wares he has to offer, and his skills in putting together some great displays.
