Another sharply pitched game between the Cards and Dodgers tonight as LA took game #3 by a 3-0 score. Well, fair is fair. The Cards beat the two best Dodger pitchers and now the Dodgers beat the best Card pitcher. With the way these two series are going I expect to see a no-hitter at some point. -- Al

Al:

I was not really interested in this series until tonight, paying more attention to the Sox/Tigers. In all actuality, this series is just as worthy. I just can't stand seeing Brian Wilson in a Dodger's uniform!

When Puig hit that triple I went to the fridge to get the mustard out.

The Cards have only scored 4 runs in 3 games and lead the series 2-1. Puig reminds me of Willie Mays. He's big, but also fast. Hard to believe he is a rookie who played only about half the season.

Only guy I've ever seen do a bat flip/pose on a triple; would have been awesome if he got thrown out at third.

Imagine him and Cano on the same team, there isn't enough mustard on the planet for that scenario.

George, Brad, Jason, you guys are killing me.^&grin^&grin^&grin -- Al

Glad we could keep you in stitches Al :wink2:

I was always taught and have observed over the years that once you hit the ball you run hard. I can't tell you how many times I've seen players do what Puig did last night and get thrown out.

I understand that he was relieved about finally getting a hit although it did remind me of the demonstration that Winfield put on in the 1981 WS against the Dodgers.

If you're looking for a player to emulate, look no farther than Anaheim for the best player in LA, if not of the best ones in the sport today: Mike Trout.

Trout is a terrific player but being on the left coast, he is not a player I have seen much of. Have to follow him through stats, which makes it hard to get a real feel for non-stat contributions. I don't follow the Angels so I don't really know if they are close to being playoff material (a missing part or two) or if they need an overhaul, starting with management. It would be a shame if the Angels can't field a contender with Trout, Trumbo, Pujols, Hamilton, and the like but I fear they may have fallen victim to the spend big/long term contract illness that plagues some teams. Wilson and Weaver are a solid basis for the starting rotation but the overall pitching needs attention. Brad, one last question on Trout. How long is he under contract for and do you think the crippling contracts for Hamilton and Pujols will cause a problem when it comes time to resign Trout? -- Al

I don't think he was celebrating getting a hit. He has plenty of those in the playoffs batting .333. He thought it was a home run. And if it was three inches to the right, it would have been. He ran pretty hard once he realized it was staying in the park. In fact, he looked like Seabiscuit rounding the bases. He goes into third standing. With TV ratings at all-time low, Puig is perfect for baseball. He's young, charismatic and talented.

Another pitching gem. Sox win 1-0 as Lackey comes through big time and outduels Verlander. Wouldn't have called that one. Now Boston has the advantage as Detroit has thrown it's two best pitchers and come away with zero wins in those games. Boston has Peavy going in game 4 against Fister. Boston looking good. -- Al

Verlander was brilliant tonight, as was Lachey, playoff baseball at its finest.

Sox have home field advantage back, need to keep grinding.

And their bullpen has been lights out.

Jake, you're up.

Ok, you can breathe now. Unexpectedly, this series is going to be very low scoring and taut. That doesn't augur well for the Tigers.

I think many saw the Cards as an afterthought, conceding a space in the WS to LA, but taking the Cardinals for granted is an activity one takes at his peril. Although a cliche, this team is battle tested and tough and their manager, although only a sophomore, is superb.

Excellent points, Brad. Cards always seem to be in the mix and as their WS record shows, they often take home the prize. -- Al

Gm 1 1-0 Tigers
Gm 2 6-5 Redsoxs
Gm 3 1-0 Redsoxs
Gm 4 6-5 Tigers....Hopefully^&grin

Great series so far. Fantastic pitching from both teams.

Off subject hockey games between Detroit and Boston have also been great so far.

With no home team to root for, I expected to be rather ho-hum about these last 4 teams, but I have to say that I am enjoying these 2 series immensely. The games have been tight, well-pitched, well played, and exciting hero -of-the-day worthy. Hard to beat baseball for these kind of drawn out and tense championships. I wish everyone with a beloved team in these playoffs luck. This is just a great way for the season to wind up for baseball fans. -- Al

Nice job by Peavy last night, way to step up.

As brutal as that inning was with him walking the bottom of the Tigers line up, he could have gotten out of that inning giving up the one run were it not for Pedroia booting a tailor made DP ball, four more runs scored after he butchered that ball, way to go Dustin.

What can you say about the Tigers pitching, it's been absolutely lights out aside from their closer who once again made things interesting in the 9th; that guy shouldn't wear a number on his back, he should wear a picture of a gas can.

If it weren't for him serving up that meatball to Ortiz, this series would basically be over at this point.

IMO, whoever wins tonight wins the series; if Sanchez pitches like Cy Young again, they are toast as if they go back to Boston down 3-2, no way, as in NO WAY they beat Scherzer and Verlander back to back, not going to happen, no way, no how.

Memo to Red Sox bats; WAKE THE @#$% UP!!!! TWO for SIXTEEN last night with RISP, just God awful.

George, this has been a tremendous series so far. As you said, the Detroit starting pitching has been dominating. In 4 games, 27 innings, the starters have only yielded 14 hits and 3 runs. It is the bullpen that has been the weak point for Detroit, 8 innings, 10 hits, and 7 runs. Boston has gotten to the bullpen and beaten them and that is all that matters, as long as it continues. Agree that Boston has a tough draw in Sanchez, Scherzer, and Verlander, but only Sanchez has a win in the series. As long as the bullpen for Detroit has a say, Boston is in it, but it is living dangerously. Boston needs to beat Sanchez and Scherzer as Verlander in a Game 7 will be a tough nut to crack.. Verlander has been beaten by Boston already, but that run Boston scored in beating him 1-0 the other night is the only run Verlander has given up in the post-season as he has pitched to a 0.39 ERA in 23 innings. I like Boston's chances in games 5 and 6, not so much if it goes to a game 7. As Boston proved, Verlander can be beaten, but twice in the same series is asking a lot. In games as close as this series has been, Ortiz has proved the well timed hit is all that is needed, along with a good closer, in order to win. This series is what baseball is all about and it has been a pleasure to watch. I'm hoping for another well-pitched classic tonight. -- Al
