Not the outcome that I wanted to see but when Miggy and Fielder don't show up then its a given. Boston earned it and I wish them the best of luck in the World series. Fielder is something else. Come Monday morning Detroit talk radio when be tearing him apart. Just pathetic.
Cabrera was hurt and has been for a while now. Hard to put particular blame on him as he kept playing and doing his best. Fielder is another matter. That man should never be allowed on a base path. Anyone can have a slump and not hit like Fielder, but as you say, take your two big bats out and there will be trouble. Even so, Detroit was in it and had a chance in each game except the bullpen gave it up. Can't get around relief pitching that doesn't do the job. Kind of sorry we didn't get to see Verlander have another shot in the series. Game 6 was a worthy game for all concerned though. -- Al

George, this wouldn't be a reference to the NY Yankees 27-13 record in the World Series, would it?

Bingo, give the man a cigar.

Of course, this assumes that the NYY's won't win another WS in the next 100 years or so.

From your lips to Gods ears.

Thanks Joe, if the Tigers had advanced, I'd be pulling for them as well.

Relief pitching was the difference in this series, the Detroit starters were basically lights out, Scherzer and Verlander allowed 3 runs in their three starts, unreal.

DID NOT want to see a game 7, Verlander scares the @#$% out of me.

We'll see what happens starting on Wednesday.

To be honest, even during the season, I never thought the Tigers were good enough to win it all. They're a good team but they didn't take that next step and were not as complete as the Red Sox who can bludgeon you as well as win the close ones. That tandem of relief pitchers makes getting a lead by the sixth inning paramount or game possibly over.

Why is Arod reviled as a cheater and yet Ortiz is a God in Boston. Boston fans want to throw away our WS titles because Arod, Pettite, etc. were involved, but no one challenges the drug involvement of Manny and Ortiz, etc. in their WS wins. Where is the indignant Shilling and others who played with both. Just saying..Michael:mad:

Hate to break it to you Michael, but not sure if you noticed during the presentation on the field of the American League Championship trophy, but Mrs Autry said "Congratulations to the 2003 American League Champion Boston Red Sox".............SO, we got that trophy just like we should have, MLB corrected that wrong too...............;).........

Arod has never been likeable and has never been popular with the Yankee fans, except until recently because he's viewed as the subject of a MLB witch hunt. Exhibit A: trying to knock the ball out of a Boston fielder's glove during the 2004 Pennant Series, the Esquire article and pulling that stunt against the Blue Jays.

For Ortiz, it's just the reverse. Whenever I've seen him, it always seems like he has a smile on his face and is enjoying himself. I even got a kick out of his applauding that great play made by the Tiger 2B or SS (can't remember which) last week.

As in the game of life, a smile, a good attitude, goes a long way.

Brad:

You beat me to it on that one. That image of Ortiz clapping and smiling as Iglesias made that catch was huge, it really reflects the kind of guy he is. There is a likeability factor in life, sports, politics etc. and Ortiz has it.

Well, it's almost time for the WS. Boston and St. Louis, baseball's two best teams by record and achievement, each at 97-65 (regular season), will meet to decide who's #1. That's as it should be. Used to be, decades ago, that the 2 teams with the best record always decided #1. Rarely happens these days. It should be a real good series as both teams seem well matched. Both teams have excellent relief pitching so it looks as if the games will be decided by starting pitcher effectiveness, or lack thereof. Starting pitching depth seems to be in Boston's favor with Lester and lackey both being effective in post-season, but Buchholz and Peavy much less so. St. Louis also has 4 men to use. Wacha and Wainwright have been very good, with Wacha, in particular, bordering on incredible. The other 2 pitchers, Kelly and Lynn, have been less effective. So in basic terms, it looks as though starting pitching match-ups will be very important and the # 3 starter even more so. As usual, pitching will tell the tale. So, who wins?^&grin I don't know but I think it will go 7 games. This should be a MLB dream WS.^&cool -- Al

After that buildup and you don't pick a winner.....sheesh! {eek3}
^&grin Weedle, weedle. I think it will be the Cards in 7, unless it's the Sox in 7. {sm3} I'm trying to be PC here, as there are many fans of both teams on this forum.:wink2:^&grin I think that Wainright and Wacha give the edge to the Cards. -- Al

I am sad that my team is not there but we have two of the best baseball cities and two of the most storied franchises going at it. I think this one will be a classic. Sox in 7. I love game 7’s in any sport, it takes on a Super Bowl, winner take all mystique that way.

We'll see how it shakes out, proud of this team and what they've done so far this year, keep grinding boys, seven down, four to go.............

Not WS related but I see where the SF Giants have resigned Tim Lincecum for 2 years for 35 million. That's a lot of money for a pitcher who hasn't had a winning record in the last 3 years and has gone 33-43 with a 4+ ERA over that time. Lincecum was a top pitcher from 2008-10 but hasn't been able to reach those heights since then. He is still a solid #4 starter, or maybe #3, but 17.5 million is a lot to pay for 11 wins. I'd like to see Lincecum reestablish his excellence but I'm not sure he can. Still, his numbers have remained relatively constant with the exception of the worrisome upward inflation of the ERA over the last 2 seasons. A tweak here or there and maybe learning to fool instead of overpower might help return him to good fortune. -- Al

Al:

Talk radio in the Bay Area is alight with this and most callers echo what you are saying. $35 mil for a 10-14 starter with an era of 4.37 this past year does not make sense (his 2012 was worse at 10-15 with a 5.18 era). If he repeats that trend we will be paying him $1.7 million per win. He was dominant his first few years, but that was then this is now. I remember analysts during those first few years saying that hitters were having trouble with him because of his delivery but in time the hitters would figure him out so he had better add some new pitches to his resume. He did not and now he gets lit up on a regular basis.

Hand it to the umps. They corrected a horrible call. Don't see that too often. Cards don't look ready to play. Can't believe its nerves. Sox looking good after 4. -- Al

How come Lester doesn't get more attention? He's been outstanding this postseason. He has won the first crucial pitching matchup, completely shutting down the Cards. This is a real good start to the series for Boston. Puts Cards in a must win position already for game 2. I thought the Cards would have the edge with Wainwright and Wacha in the first 2 games. Now Wacha has to win, which is a lot of pressure on a rookie with a total of 12 starts under his belt. He's capable of winning, as he has proved, but pitching down 1 game is a lot different than pitching up 1 game. Cards will have to win or there is a real possibility of a Sox sweep. Beauty of a win for the Sox in Game 1. -- Al
