Wait? The season started? I am so confused by the schedule, the Dodgers playing the D-Backs in Australia is the official start of the season/opening day?
Yes that is correct they played at the Sydney Cricket Ground {a rather famous old stadium in OZ}....so game has had some good media attention.
They interviewed some fans on the news one was from Arizona he said he had never been to a opening game before in his life but flew down for this one.
A few days before the D-Backs also played a game against team Australia.....one thing for sure they must have spent big to change the SCG for baseball.

Although the games count, opening day doesn't start until a week from this Sunday as teams are still in Spring training. Baseball has done this before with games in Japan but these games are not Opening Day, just a marketing move to promote the game in Australia.

Speaking of the Dodgers, I see that Puig has picked up where he left off by irritating his manager and teammates. Could be a long season for Donny Ballgame if he has to babysit this character all season. :rolleyes2: -- Al

This guy irritated the doctor in the delivery room when he was born and has been on a roll ever since..........

Amen! Gots the O's in the AL and the Nats in the NL already for a BW Parkway World Series. Play Ball! -- Al

I could see the Nats doing it (and they should have done it last year) but not the Os. They've got a good offense but pitching is suspect in my view, not to mention Machado: is he healthy? I heard earlier in spring training that his comeback was slow. In the AL East, I still like the BoSox and Rays. Os are like the Yankees: a lot of questions.

True enough. Machado is starting the season on the DL but is expected back by May 1 at the latest. The O's pitching has some questions but they have 4 good starters, and if they pitch to potential the O's will be in the thick of it. The AL East is going to be fun, as always. Lots of expectations with the Nats, and justly so. They have a crowded pitching scene. Lots of good arms with 5 solid starters and 2 more starters waiting, one in the pen, the other at AAA. I know a lot of people think Detroit has the best starting pitching, but the Nats are real close, if not even. It's going to be a fun ride. -- Al

No matter what happens, it is just great to be talking baseball again!

And now Cabrera gets $292 mil over 10 years. Does anyone really think this guy will be worth $29.2 mil when he is 38 or even 36, 37?

Salary insanity continues unabated as the Angels just locked up Trout for 6 years at $24 million per. This sounds like a bargain relative to the Cabrera signing. Can anyone say "salary cap"? :rolleyes2: I get ticked off every time I see these huge numbers. MLB should go to a salary cap. As my wife says, these salaries are just sinful. Even if salaries were capped at a 'miniscule' one million bucks a year, the players still get to play a game for a living, at a money level higher than 99% of the population. It would be a tough life. -- Al

Why is it sinful, which is really a moral judgment and these are financial decisions. Morality doesn't enter into it. They are the best in their profession. Why should they not be compensated accordingly? Actors and actresses and singers are highly paid. Why not athletes?

In our culture, when you are the best at something you get paid more than others. I don't see anything wrong with that.

It really is just the warped values applied to entertainment, sports or movies. Hard to justify, to me anyway, paying a ballplayer $20 million a year or a movie star $20 million for a picture when people like our military, firefighters and cops risk their lives for, maybe, $50 k a year. But that's just my opinion. I am just whining to whine. -- Al

Al/Brad:

You both make valid points. I still think firefighters, police officers, teachers and the military should get paid more than athletes or entertainers.

My question is who pays for all of this? I tend to think it is you and I through $6 dollar hotdogs and $10 beers. There is no average fan left who can afford to go to a game, it is all corporate etc.

Opening Day is here at last! O's have Boston at home, providing the field has dried out from yesterday's snowstorm, and the Nat's travel to the Mets. Game one on the long road to the World Series. Play ball! -- Al

This is the first time I can't say I'm excited about the season. Mets look to be a total disaster. I just wish the Wilpons would sell the team to someone who will spend some money. They have one of the lowest payrolls in the game.

Successful opening day for both the O's and the Nats, although I wasn't expecting the slugfest that the Nats game turned into. The race is on, at last.^&grin -- Al
