The problem is that the Yankees don't have the patience to build it up because that means you have to get bad or be as clever as the Cardinals but few teams are as good as the Cardinals in that respect.

To to build it up takes time and the Yankee fans, having been spoiled, are impatient. The results showed up at the gate and on the YES ratings. As Fox is the majority owner of YES, they can't afford to be patient. In a sense they are the victims of their own success.

Brad:

Well said.

Do you think the AL East is the toughest division in baseball from top to bottom now?

Now that all this Superbowl silliness is over, there are less than 2 weeks left before pitchers and catchers report. Thank goodness.:wink2:^&cool -- Al

Al:

Sports talk in the Bay Area is already churning out baseball! It is great.

Best,

Ralph Kiner has passed away at the age of 91. Ralph was a feared slugger with the Pirates and Cubs, among others, and is a member of the Hall of Fame.

Ralph was better known to later sports fans as one of the voices of the Mets, along with the late Lindsay Nelson and the late Bob Murphy, all three of whom have now passed away.

His Kiner's Korner on WOR Channel 9 in NY after Mets' games was legendary.

Later on in the 1980s, he was teamed on TV with Tim McCarver and Steve Zabriskie as the voice of the Mets. That was one of the best broadcasting teams ever. I'm sure Timmy is upset upon hearing of Ralph's passing as they were very close and got along very, very well.

Ralph retired probably about five or six years ago and did an occasional game.

RIP Ralph. Feel like I've lost part of the family :(

Brad:

This is a truly sad passing. He was a pillar of the game and broadcasting.

I had hoped that the Giants would pick up Bronson Arroyo but I guess it was not meant to be.

With the signing of Tyler Clippard to a contract today, the Nats have avoided having to go to arbitration with any of their eligible players. One big, happy team for this season's playoff run.:wink2: -- Al

Agreed, the Nats have had a quiet off-season which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Yes, it was a relatively quiet off-season, mainly because we are in real good shape with our present personal. The big signing was RHP Doug Fister to join an already strong starting corps of Zimmermann, Strasburg, and Gonzalez. There are at least 4 others who will battle for the 5th spot with Detwiler having the inside track. Barring the catastrophic injury, and with a big year expected from Strasburg, this starting staff is as good as any in baseball. The bullpen is in equally good shape. Nats are also set with outstanding talent at all the fielding positions. It is no understatement to say that after last season's disappointment, a LOT is expected out of this team. Play ball! -- Al

That kind of off-season stability is priceless. Good move on the management's part to realize that they have a good thing going, no need to attempt to make a splash with a big unnecessary component.

I think the Nats will really challenge my Giants, like you said, Play Ball!!!!!

Derek Jeter announced he will be retiring at the end of the 2014 season. Wisely he is not going to try to keep playing past the limits of his age and health. He is going the way he came, and stayed, gracefully.

Preface [I am not a Yankee fan]

Derek Jeter is one of the classiest players to ever where a baseball uniform. In fact, he is one of the classiest players to where any uniform.

Sad to see him go, but glad he is going out the right way.

I wonder if Jeter will get a send-off type tour as the team goes from one road series to the next like Cal Ripken did when he retired. The send-off Cal got is going to be hard to beat. Seemed like every team they visited had a send off for him. I still remember his final home game like it was yesterday. I rather imagine NY will do a fine job. Jeter deserves it. -- Al

I am not sure if he is going to get a Ripken style send off but I am going to see the Yanks when they play at Oakland in the hopes of seeing him play live one last time.

A quick tip of the cap and get well to Mark Mulder. His come back was derailed by a torn Achilles' tendon. I met him a couple of times when he was an Oakland A at a yearly fund raising event (both times he gave me grief for wearing a Giants hat). He was a really cool guy and I wish him well.

O's have signed RHP Ubaldo Jimenez to anchor their starting pitching rotation. He would seem to be the final piece to what the O's hope to accomplish with their starters. He will get $48 million for 4 years. His lifetime record is 82-75 with a 3.92 ERA over 8 seasons. This give the O's a solid 1-2 top of the rotation with Tillman. The O's needed a solid vet and they got one. Like the O's chances as the starting pitching just got well improved. -- Al

I would say it's a just ok signing and I think the Os overpaid. Since his 17 game winning season with the Rockies in 2010 he's been on a downward trajectory, except for 2013. I think teams wondered which pitcher are they seeing, which is probably why no one signed him until spring training started.

And in other big news, Machado took BP and fielded some grounders. I am really pulling for him to make a full come-back.

I agree about the overpaying. GM Duquette is obviously hoping that the pitcher from 2010 is the one that they are buying. I certainly expect the O's can get 13 or more wins out of him and I would guess the O's want 17-18 out of him. At least we know he can pitch, which is what the O's wanted in the way of someone to anchor a rather unsettled starting rotation. O's have several starters with great potential but they haven't proved they can stay consistent or pitch an entire season yet. -- Al

Hi Al, also noticed the O's signed a pretty good Korean pitcher (forgot name) and now lets hope Ubaldo has a season he had a few years ago, so maybe no real big signings for the Orioles but the core of the team is back and hoping D. Bundy is ready by June and sounds like Manny M. is making good progress as Jason mentioned, lets hope it continues...Sammy
