Sox won two out of three vs the MFY's, slapped some tomato can all over the place tonight.

Someone needs to splain to me how the MFY's are 1.5 out of first place with that starting staff, outside of Cy/Denny/Jim/Bob/Lefty Tanaka, they stink, as in stink on ice.

And Ortiz hit a BOMB tonight, close to 480 feet, wow did he murder that ball........................

At this rate, the division winners record will be 82-80................

Don't worry, it's the American League East...ESPN will continue to fawn over it as if there is no baseball anywhere else in the country.

Yeah, ESPN should really tone it down when it comes to the AL east as combined, that division has only won 40 WS titles/5 out of the last 12..............

I will say the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry that they constantly trumpet is really not much of one anymore, the shine has worn off of that apple quite a bit. To me, the Rays are more of a rival than the MFY's, there's some genuine deep seeded hatred going on there and each series is interesting.

This past RS/MFY series was a sure cure for insomnia.

It was fun though listening to FOX and ESPN fawn all over Derek Sanderson Jeter for two days; good God, does he walk on water too? The ballwashing was epic, Kruk last night went on and on and on about how Jeter goes to right field and how he handles each at bat and how he waits patiently on the pitch and shoots the ball to right; I guess it has nothing to do with the fact that he's 40 years old and his bat speed is a fraction of what it once was so a lot of his hits now go to right.

Thankfully I'll be in Chicago the weekend the MFY's come to Boston to cap Jeters fairwell tour............

The NYY's being where they are and continuing to compete with what they have has turned out to be the mystery story of the year. They shouldn't be anywhere near the top, based on the personal and stats, yet there they are. The NYY's are in the bottom half of MLB in most all significant batting and pitching catagories and they have already used 24 different pitchers. As George says, take away Tanaka and the next best record on the team is Kuroda at 5-5. No other starter has more than 3 wins. Yet, here they are and I'm betting the NYY's stay in it. The caveat is that the hottest and longest baseball months are now here and the NYY MUST find Tanaka some help. I just don't see how they hang in otherwise. Then again, I don't see how they've done it this far. -- Al

Al:

If you have strong middle relief than 5 innings or so from your starters will win you lots of games. The O's seem to have that so I can see them doing well.

And the Nats are about to get Harper back............

Best,
Jason
Jason, I'm going to be surprised if Harper isn't back in the line-up in the next couple of days, maybe a s early as tonight's game. Sure hope he can spark the offense because not much else has helped. We're hitting .244 and averaging exactly 4 runs per game. No room for error there. -- Al

The commentators last night when they weren't slobbering all over Jeter said the MFY's are 100% going after starting pitching help at the trade deadline; they can have Peavy and Buchholz if they want them, I'll drive the two of them to the airport as a matter of fact.

They also said basically two of their free agent signings have been busts so far, McCann and Beltran; not sure what they expected from Beltran as he's getting up there in age, McCann is the classic "Signs for a ton of money and feels the pressure of the contract/playing in a big market" failure thus far. They also said Ellsbury hasn't exactly lit it up either; he's doing what he does every year, 270-280ish, on track for 10 to 12 HR's, 50 to 60 RBI's, noodle arm in center field and stealing a lot of bases.

Not worth anywhere near the kind of dough he signed for...................

Al:

I would geuss that his return will have an instant impact.

Harper has been reinstated and a relief pitcher optioned. The impact will be immediate in that someone has to go to the bench to make way for him. With Harper back, the Nats will have their opening day lineup back for the first time since opening day. This means Zimmerman, the new LF (old 3B) goes back to 3rd so Harper can take left. Also means Rendon goes from 3rd (where he was very good) back to 2nd, which means slick fielding Espinoza takes a seat on the bench. We'll see if it clicks. Feeling is that Zimm was happy in LF and well glad to be rid of 3B because of his arthritic shoulder. Maybe the moves will ignite what has been a relatively moribund offense. -- Al

Al:

How do you think Zimmerman did in left? I remember there being some concerns when they first made the move. I saw one extra inning game where he made a great catch and got a huge hit but beyond that I was never sure how it panned out?

Jason, Zimm was working out pretty well. He's not the fastest guy but he seemed to be where he needed to be. He has made several fine catches and made a couple of good throws. He seems happy there and the team didn't seem to have any worries about his ability to play there long term. He has also played some 1B and that would seem to be his long term future, especially if Adam LaRoche should leave for any reason. -- Al

So far, so good. Nats win Harper's return game 7-3. Harper got a hit, a walk, and an RBI in his 4 at bats. Made some good, agressive plays on the base paths. Zimm had a grand return to 3rd base, going 3 of 4 with an RBI and playing well at 3rd. So far, so good. So far, so good.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I keep an eye on former O's pitchers that have ended up on other teams and one of them is Jake Arrieta, now with the Cubs. Jake just fanned 11 in a 7 inning outing that resulted in his record going to 3-1, 1.98 ERA, with the last place Cubs. Interesting that Guthrie of KC also won today, lowering his ERA to 3.86. These two could have been of use to an O's rotation that has 3 starters with ERAs over 4.40. I wish they had stayed in B-more. -- Al[/QUOTE/]

Arrieta handcuffed the Red Sox tonight, allowing 1 hit in 7.2 innings, 0 runs and fanning 10. Arrieta is rounding into the pitcher the O's hoped he would be, but lost patience on. He is now 5-1 with a 1.81 ERA for the terrible Cubs. -- Al

I hate it when a former Giant tears it up. I know I should be happy for the player, but it does hurt when your team gives up on a guy who turns out to be great with another team.

Don't worry Al; I'm sure the Yankees will end up with him, Theo will trade him to the MFY's for a bag of balls to stick it to the Red Sox.................:wink2:

I'd rather Theo send him back to the O's.^&grin Theo will probably send Arrieta and Samadzija to the NYY's if he wants to stick it to Boston. Don't you think A-Rod and CC would look good in Cub's blue?{eek3} -- Al

I am seriously wondering if this team will ever learn how to field a baseball. 3 more games, 2 more errors, 3 more unearned runs. Now at 53 games, 46 errors, and 32 unearned runs. This poor fielding has cost them 4 or 5 wins and made several others a lot harder than they needed to be. This sloppiness could really cost them a shot at the playoffs. As a team, the Nats are allowing 3.85 runs a game, with .6 of it as an unearned run, per game. That puts a lot of stress on the pitchers and the offense, literally forcing the offense to score a run more per game to overcome defensive liabilities. Little wonder the Nats are hovering at .500. -- Al
When I wrote the above, the Nats stood at 26-27 on the season and had looked very mediocre. Their fielding had been a disaster, no ifs, ands, or buts. Since this low point, and timed with Ryan Zimmerman's return 3 games later, this team has turned around, both in record and fielding. They have gone 19-11 in the 30 games since being 26-27, but more impressively, the Nats have learned to field a baseball. Since the turn around in the last 30 games, the Nats have committed only 8 errors and allowed only 2 unearned runs. The pitching continues to be outstanding, leading the NL, and now the fielding has come around, leaving the hit-or-miss offense as the weak point. At the very least, the Nats are now earning their losses instead of just giving games away as they did in April and May. I am getting more optimistic by the day. -- Al

Big time good stat for the O's. Since May 31, they are 18-12, the only AL East club with a winning record in that time span. With Jones on his usual pace, Cruz crushing the ball, Pierce a very pleasant surprise, Hardy rediscovering his Hr stroke (somewhat), all they need to be offensively awesome is for Davis to get on board. Even the starting pitching has been doing a decent job. Optimism is the word of the day for Baltimore and Washington. -- Al

Have to give Cubs fans credit; for a fan base of a team that blows, they travel well; today I met Miss Tiffany in Boston for lunch at Fanuel Hall and they were everywhere, waddling around in their Cub hats and XXXXL tee shirts.

And props to the guy who was looking at Miss Tiffany and not where he was walking; he creamed a lamp post but good, hope it was worth it..............:wink2:
