Well gents...thanks to a sweep by the Crew the Dodgers no longer have the best record in the NL. That goes to...the Nationals! Both Milwaukee and Washington are 15 games over .500, but the Nats technically have a better winning percentage. Even the fight for home field should be interesting this year.
A season best 6 game winning streak for the Nats, thanks to a second consecutive walk-off win vs the Pie-rats. As up and down as the Nats have been for most of the season, they have been playing well of late but I hadn't realized they now owned the best NL record. We'll take it and be thankful to the Brewers for the outstanding assist, whose own 3 game lead is looking pretty good. :salute:: -- Al

Al:

Yup, should be a great season down the stretch!

And George's Sox can still do some damage. As Tom Hanks (Captain Miller) says in Saving Private Ryan after the tread has been knocked off the Tiger: "He is still in this fight......"

I see Timmy L got his 10th win today. Giants staying close.^&grin -- Al

Al:

It was tough going but he got the win.

Now if we can just keep playing the Phil's while the Dodgers play the Brewers we should wrap up the West shortly!

Jason, I hear you on that one. Nats need to keep playing the Mets and avoid Atlanta. We are 10-2 against the Mets and play them 7 more times. On the flip side, we are 4-9 against Atlanta and still have to play them 6 more times. We just can't play well against Atlanta. -- Al

Al:

I think you're right, we are both in the same boat. The Giants do exceptionally well against the likes of Philadelphia and San Diego but struggle against teams like the Brewers, Nats and Dodgers. I still think the Giants can make the playoffs, the problem is I don't think the Phil's or Padres will.

Just rub it in, why don't you? One day the worm will turn. It brings to mind the story I'm sure you've heard: at the end of the Civil War, a freed slave now in the Army sees his ex-owner being led away in chains and says to him, "Hello massa, bottom rail on top this time." That day will come :wink2:

Not trying to rub it in, Brad. It's just the way it is right now. It could change next series. Actually, I'm thinking the Nats would trade a few wins over the Mets for a few wins over the Braves. Besides, and completely off track, the Mets already broke my heart in '69, so whatever my teams (Nats or O's) do against the Mets, is just inadequate as payback.:wink2::rolleyes2: -- Al

More famous last words:

Before the 1934 season, Giants Manager Bill Terry was asked about Brooklyn's chances in the pennant race. He answered, "Brooklyn? I haven't heard anything from lately. Are they still in the league?" This sparked a war of words, and a wager of two new suits, with Dodgers Manager Max Carey. Brooklyn then spoiled the Giants' spoiled the Giants' playoff hopes on the final day of the season, 8-5 in 10 innings.

My new favorite team in the NL (beside the Mets): AWBTN (Anyone who beats the Nits) and, no, that is no typo :mad:

I've never heard that one, Brad, and I don't recall slave owners being imprisoned after the war for being slave owners?
If so there were plenty of Northern slave traders who should have done time as well. Right?

I think what you mean is reversion to the mean, or "being due". The Cubs alone are proof reversion to the mean doesn't always come to pass - though there are plenty of other examples (I.e., Atlanta Hawks)

The Nats are responsible for my BP being on the rise. For the 3rd game in a row the Nats have won in a walk-off after blowing 2 late game leads. Beat Arizona 5-4 with a LaRoche Hr in the bottom of the 11th. Truth is Arizona should have won this one as they loaded the bases with no out in the top of the 11th but couldn't score as the Nat's pitcher fanned 2 and got the 3rd out on a weak grounder. The Nats have a 7 game winning streak, 5 by 1 run. They have needed every break as Atlanta continues to win to keep pace. -- Al

Al:

I just saw the highlight of that walk-off HR by LaRoche! Now that was a great dramatic win!!!!!

The Pirates have chosen a FABULOUS time to lose 7 in a row, so they are fading quickly from the playoff picture. It'll come down to Milwaukee against St. Louis, and they have plenty of games against each other.

Last night the 'Crew kept the Blue Jays reeling with 7 doubles and a brilliant outing by Mike Fiers (some guy I'd never heard of until a couple weeks ago). Garza and Lohse go down...new guys step up. It's just one of those seasons...

Good night for the B-W corridor. Nat's Strasburg got his 10th win to stretch the Nat's winning streak to 8 and maintain their lead of 6 over Atlanta and 8.5 over Miami, who both won, again. Nats are winning but not gaining ground. The O's Tillman won his 10th game as the O's gained on the entire AL East, who all lost. O's now lead NY by 8.5 and Toronto by 9. O's are in a good position. All they have to do is play .500 ball to give themselves 91 wins, which means NY has to go 28-11 to tie them and Toronto would have to go 27-9, both big hills to climb. Only an O's collapse will let NY or Toronto back in at this point. We'll see, as someone once said, "Baseball is a funny game.". Amen. -- Al

I want 100 wins Al! Chris

Chris, I would be happy with that, too. O's would have to finish 28-10 but it would solve the pesky pennant race equation, as NY would have to go 38-1 to beat us (Toronto would have to finish 36-0 just to tie). Yes, 100 wins would be good.^&cool -- Al

Al:

The Giants were in a rain delay most of last night so I saw plenty of highlights of the Nats. As I have said time and again, when Strasburg is on he is just about unhittable. His control and movement last night were amazing, he simply dominated.

Jason,
Stras was sharp last night, and for once he was pitch efficient. I was hoping Williams would let him finish the game but he came out after 8. If Stras can get some consistency going it would give the Nats a big boost.
Tough loss for the Giants. Don't need weather shortened losses at this stage of the season. -- Al

Al:

Yes, it was a tough loss for the Giants. And now, when they get shut out I start to worry that they are going to start to slump. I am keeping positive but this team has given me fits all year, once they seem to have turned it around they take 2 steps back. Ugh!

Looking forward to watching the Giants as well as the Sox and Angels tonight.

Jason, I see the Giants won their protest about the rain-shortened Cubs game and will get to finish it on Thursday. That is good news. It's the first upheld protest in 28 years. -- Al

Absolutely shocking and great news. The Cubs and Giants have a long history of rain issues going back to the early 90's but I think this tops them all!
