Nats took a well-played series in Chicago, 2 games to 1. A very well pitched series on both sides. Nats starters went 19 innings, allowing 2 runs. Scores were 2-1, 2-3, 3-0. Sloppy defense cost them game 2. Harper added 2 more Hr's that run his season total to 18, 13 of them in May. Harper has had one heck of a month. -- Al

Al:

Harper is worth watching every at-bat. He has lived up to the hype.

He is certainly growing into the hype. Has already surpassed last year's numbers in less than half the games. Now if only we can get Strasburg to pitch decently and Fister off the DL... -- Al

Nats battling the injury bug right now. With Strasburg now on the 15 day DL, 40% of the starting pitchers are laid up, along with team leader and starting Lf Werth, starting 3b Rendon, and now Harper is day to day after getting drilled in the back last night. 5 others are on the DL as well.{sm2} -- Al

O's lost a chance to get to .500 today, dropping the game to Tampa Bay 3-0. Chen is the O's hard-luck pitcher so far this season. He has 6 QS in 10 starts, with an ERA of 3.21, yet has a unfortunate 1-4 record to show for his efforts. He pitches well, keeps the O's in the game but has had the misfortune to not get timely run support. He should have at least 5 wins, but every season someone seems to be unlucky on every pitching staff. Today's loss means the O's won't reach .500 again after closing to within 1 game of it for the second time since they were 12-12 on May 5. They have only won as many as 3 games in a row once all season (late April), it's just up, down, up, down. We need a good winning streak. -- Al

Nats took a header in Cinncy in what is a lost weekend. Lost all 3 games thanks to HORRIBLE bullpen performances in all 3 games. Relief pitchers took all 3 losses in situatuions where the Nats had the lead or were tied. A pitiful exhibition and it is obvious that in 2 of the games the loss of Clippard in the off season cost them. Next. -- Al

Wow, if you had told me that the O's, Red Sox would be the bottom feeders in the AL East and the Yanks/Rays would be fighting it out for 1st in June I would have thought you were Cray-cray!! no doubt my O's suck pretty bad right now, good pitching (no runs) good hitting (can't Pitch) to many injuries, players who had great stats last year not contributing, yada, yada, yada...well at least the boys from College Park are making noise, at this rate the Terps could probabley give the O's a run for thier money...Sammy

good pitching (no runs) good hitting (can't Pitch).................

Yep, the story of the Red Sox season so far as well.

No ace in their staff, no #2 or #3 either, they've got 5 #4 and #5's, plus their roster has older stars on the back nine (Ortiz, Napoli, Victorio, Pedroia) youngsters who aren't ready yet (Bradley, Boegarts, Castillo, Holt, Swihart, Betts), then throw in free agents who aren't performing in Panda and Ramirez and it's a recipe for last place....................

I don't care what the pundits say about how losing Cruz and Markakis wouldn't matter, it obviously has, if not in offensive/defensive output, then in team chemistry. Coupled with the underperforming Tillman and Norris (2 crucial startering pitchers) and this stumbling season is not all that surprising. Throw in MLB's worst road record and things are starting to look grim. Still not a lost season, there is too much time left, but it is time to get it in gear because it will get late, fast, if this stumbling along continues too much longer. One hot streak by NYY's or Tampa Bay could bury the O's if they don't find some consistency. -- Al

O's finally beat Houston today with some excellent pitching, getting a QS from Chen, who once again did a good job only to get another ND and remain stuck with 1 win in 11 starts. O's won 3-2, scoring the winning run after Chen had left. At least they broke the 5 game skid. -- Al

I am still having a tough time believing that Houston is that good. I know the numbers do not lie, but I keep waiting for them to implode.

Ha, Jason you're not the only one. They keep bowling teams over and I still don't believe. Maybe in another month or so.:rolleyes2: -- Al

We just left Yankee Stadium after watching the Angels getting pommelled. When you give up 2 HRs to Stephen Drew, you know you're having a bad night.

Moral victory as you all scored off of Betances. No one else has.:wink2: -- Al

Giants finally got a win today. The Phillies are just plain terrible, but a win is a win.

Unless the Orioles get their act together, looks like the MFY's will win the East with a bunch of guys I've never heard of; other than A-Roid, horseface, dreamboat, Sherman Klump and coconut head, I wouldn't know the rest of the team if I fell over them, yet there they are in first place.

Wonderful.

Same here; they were showing their faces last night on the scoreboard and I have never seen most of them before. There was very little buzz in the crowd last. Odd crowd. Lot of tourists it seemed to me.

Have to say that the NYY's season has been a huge surprise. I didn't expect A-Rod to be a positive factor or Big Tex to rebound so completely, plus the no-name rotation that keeps them in games until the lightning out of the bull-pen finishes the game. The NYY's success has been a bigger surprise to me than the O's struggles as I really expected the O's to be effected by the loss of Markakis and Cruz, but maybe the return of Weiters will light a fire. Like you say, O's have to get it in gear because catching the NYY's is just going to get harder as the number of games left to play keeps shrinking. -- Al

Whoa! Glad this day is over, as far as baseball is concerned. I hit the trifecta as all 3 of my teams lost. Nats lost 4-2 as their offense once again sputtered. The O's lost 2-1 in a most unusual game from a pitching standpoint as Umbaldo went 5 innings, walked 6, gave up 6 hits, and only yielded 1 run. Ugly game. No one could score. To top it all off, my Alma Mater, UMd, choked itself out of the college baseball playoffs. Bad day all around for my local teams. -- Al
