The O's are in trouble. They have the bats, defense, and bullpen to make the playoffs. What they don't have is the starting pitching. All their starters are capable of an outstanding game, every now and then, but inconsistency is the order of the day and that makes a stretch run very difficult, if not impossible. I really wish they had gotten off their money and had signed a big name starter to anchor the staff. The 4 starters the O's have were able to hold it together last year and get them to the playoffs, this year has been a different story. Chen has been the only consistent note and is their best starter but, for whatever reason, has continuing bad luck (every staff has that hard-luck starter) and wins are hard to get. Tillman is their horse but has been a roller-coaster this season. Gonzalez and Jimenez have had great games but both have faded since the break and are becoming detriments. Gausman is the #5 starter and has been decent but he isn't a difference maker. I have held out hope all season that this collection of #3 and #4 type starters could get it done, like last year, but I have come to the realization that it's just not happening this season. The O's aren't officially DOA yet, and their bats, with an occasional great start, might still get them to the promised land, but we all know that pitching in the playoffs is essential, will be the opponents best starters, and will stop even hot bats dead in their tracks, and the O's simply haven't got those kind of starters this year. Any trip to the playoffs is likely to be a hello/goodbye sort of visit. They should have spent a little money and at least taken the shot, but the playoff trip last year convinced management that similar results could be had on the cheap again this year. Oh well. -- Al
