Baseball Hot Stove 2015-2016 (3 Viewers)

He's just a lefty specialist now, that's all he can be. A screwball, if there was ever one. Mets fans will enjoy booing him again.

Heard a mention that the Giants have signed Jeff Samardzija to a 5 year deal. Can anyone confirm? -- Al

Baseball has lost it's mind. Samardzija gets $90 mil., a pitcher with a 47-61 record and an ERA of 4.09. The definition of mediocrity and he's worth $90 mil? The guy has been around for 8 years and has 47 wins. Jeesh.:rolleyes2: Zimmermann should have got a LOT more money. -- Al

It's a panic move. They would have been better off signing Bartolo Colon. They have a lot of mediocre pitchers like Peavy and Heston. They needed a solid number 2 and he isn't it.

They wanted Greinke (although now it seems they might have been in it to drive up his price with the Dodgers), then they wanted Lackey and now they have to settle for the consolation prize. Time will tell on this move.

I am still hoping for a hitter to be signed, maybe they will get one at the upcoming meetings?

John Lackey joins the Cubs to become another ex-AL starter that has ended up with the Cubbies. Their rotation boasts Lester, Arrieta, Lackey, and Hammel, all of whom started out in the AL and spent the majority of their careers in the AL. Maybe the Cubs should swap leagues with the White Sox. :rolleyes2: -- Al

They were rumored at one point to be interested in Cespedes.

I think Wei Yin Chen would have been a better choice. He has a nice record the last couple of years and is not old.

According to the O's talk show today, the Trumbo trade does not mean the O's have written off Davis. Apparently, the O's want Trumbo for DH, a position that they saw produce much less in 2015 than in 2014. They are still in the Davis sweepstakes and also the O'Day sweepstakes. This does not address their need for outfielders or starting pitchers. O'Day is expected to make a decision in the next couple of days, between the O's and Nats according to the talk show. O'Day was offered more money by the Dodgers than either the Nats or O's but O'Day wants to stay on the East coast because his wife has a good job in DC. One wonders that it must be a real good job for O'Day to turn down bigger money than what he can expect by staying in this area. -- Al

I would definitely take Cespedes.

New rumor out west is that the Dodgers are listening to offers for Puig. I don't see it happening.

Giants are one of the team's hot for Zobrist. Giving a 34 year old a 4 year contract is a bit too rich for me.

O'Day is expected to re-sign with the Orioles.

Done deal as O'Day stays with the O's. He got a 4 year, $31 mil contract. Lot of money for an 8th inning man but he's worth it, I suppose, based on today's market and he is good. -- Al

So far so good, O's resign O'Day, picked up Trumbo, now if we could resign Davis maybe a solid pitcher maybe we can get back into the AL East again...Sammy

The Orioles GM was on MLB Radio last night and said they've been talking to Davis but that pretty soon they're going to have to move on.

Dodgers are interested in Chapman and are talking to the Marlins about Fernandez. I have no idea why they want Chapman when they have one of the best closers in baseball and why Marlins would trade a number 1 pitcher is also beyond me unless he and the club are not getting along. Reportedly, the Marlins are open to the possibility but have requested Seager and their number 1 pitching prospect in return.

Papelbum has filed a grievance against the Nats for his pay over the 4 day suspension from his altercation with Harper. I guess the dork wants to be paid for his misbehavior. Isn't it enough he gets paid for not being an effective pitcher? What more can he do to get himself run out of town? His acquisition was a disaster from the get go and it keeps getting worse. Nats should just cut him and eat the salary but that won't happen. -- Al

Dodgers have acquired Chapman for prospects and will team him up with Jansen. That will be a lethal back of the bullpen combination. Unless you score by the 7th, you're not going to be getting many runs after that.

Another one lost by the Nats. The Nats were after Chapman and O'Day but I fear Rizzo is being handcuffed by the Lerner's allergy to multi-year contracts for relief pitchers. They lost O'Day over refusal to offer a 4th year, not money. The Dodger signing is a one-shot at the ring type of thing as both Jansen and Chapman become FA after 2016. -- Al

I don't blame the Nats on the O'Day thing. I think that it's just ridiculous to give a reliever a four year deal. Starters are bad enough but a reliever. Frank Cashen must be spinning in his grave.

That's a good point. O'Day will be 37 at the back end of the deal. Still, it seems to be the trend to offer more years than is practical for a team, knowing that the player will likely be a losing proposition for the last couple of years of the long contract, but that seems to be what is needed to stay competitive for the big names. -- Al

Red Sox have traded Wade Miley to the Mariners for Smith and Elias; Elias is Miley light, a long reliever/spot starter, but Smith..............wow, he's a 7th inning specialist.

Red Sox now have a legit bullpen with a new closer, two good set up men and a lights out seventh inning option.

Their new GM does not fool around I guess................
