It's a panic move. They would have been better off signing Bartolo Colon. They have a lot of mediocre pitchers like Peavy and Heston. They needed a solid number 2 and he isn't it.
They wanted Greinke (although now it seems they might have been in it to drive up his price with the Dodgers), then they wanted Lackey and now they have to settle for the consolation prize. Time will tell on this move.
I am still hoping for a hitter to be signed, maybe they will get one at the upcoming meetings?
They were rumored at one point to be interested in Cespedes.
I think Wei Yin Chen would have been a better choice. He has a nice record the last couple of years and is not old.
Done deal as O'Day stays with the O's. He got a 4 year, $31 mil contract. Lot of money for an 8th inning man but he's worth it, I suppose, based on today's market and he is good. -- AlGiants are one of the team's hot for Zobrist. Giving a 34 year old a 4 year contract is a bit too rich for me.
O'Day is expected to re-sign with the Orioles.
According to the O's talk show today, the Trumbo trade does not mean the O's have written off Davis. Apparently, the O's want Trumbo for DH, a position that they saw produce much less in 2015 than in 2014. They are still in the Davis sweepstakes and also the O'Day sweepstakes. This does not address their need for outfielders or starting pitchers. O'Day is expected to make a decision in the next couple of days, between the O's and Nats according to the talk show. O'Day was offered more money by the Dodgers than either the Nats or O's but O'Day wants to stay on the East coast because his wife has a good job in DC. One wonders that it must be a real good job for O'Day to turn down bigger money than what he can expect by staying in this area. -- Al
Another one lost by the Nats. The Nats were after Chapman and O'Day but I fear Rizzo is being handcuffed by the Lerner's allergy to multi-year contracts for relief pitchers. They lost O'Day over refusal to offer a 4th year, not money. The Dodger signing is a one-shot at the ring type of thing as both Jansen and Chapman become FA after 2016. -- AlDodgers have acquired Chapman for prospects and will team him up with Jansen. That will be a lethal back of the bullpen combination. Unless you score by the 7th, you're not going to be getting many runs after that.
That's a good point. O'Day will be 37 at the back end of the deal. Still, it seems to be the trend to offer more years than is practical for a team, knowing that the player will likely be a losing proposition for the last couple of years of the long contract, but that seems to be what is needed to stay competitive for the big names. -- AlI don't blame the Nats on the O'Day thing. I think that it's just ridiculous to give a reliever a four year deal. Starters are bad enough but a reliever. Frank Cashen must be spinning in his grave.
