Bummer for UMd and USNA as they both lost. Navy has had trouble with turnovers and penalties the last 2 games, very unlike them. Today it cost them as they committed 5 turnovers and their leaky defense was unable to offset these. UMd was just typically outplayed. Oh well, there is always the next game. -- Al

Sooners with the bounce back win over Texas 29-24, almost blew a 20-0 lead, they were down 24-23 but scored a late TD to pull out the win.

Hoping they can get back into the national championship hunt.............

This year losing one game is a not a death sentence. Couple that with a tough Big 12 schedule and a win against Ohio State and I would say that Oklahoma is still in the race, if not a near the front of the pack to qualify for a spot in the playoff.

Some interesting games this weekend. Four of the top ten teams went down last weekend to unranked opponents.

Penn. St. 27 Michigan 17 - home field is the difference. Michigan's offense has also looked horrible.

Notre Dame 31 USC 27 - I hate to pick against the mighty Trojans but ND is quietly having a good season and they have set themselves up to win this one with a bye week and resting their starting QB. SC on the other hand has played a brutal schedule with no breaks, has a ton of injuries, has to go on the road. If they can run the ball consistently though, they will make a game out of it.

Texas 34 Oklahoma St. 17 - The Horns have flirted with a couple of big upsets and come up short. This week they hook the #10 team.

Wisconsin 20 MD 13 - Wisconsin is wildly overrated at #5 not having played anyone. The Terps have been hit and miss but could keep it close. I said that when they played Ohio St though and they got steam rolled.

Some biggies this weekend:

Ohio St. 30 Penn St. 27- game of the year. Home field is the difference. Whoever scheduled Michigan and Ohio St. back to back did PSt. no favors.

USC 27 ASU 23 - fresh off a humiliating beat down to the Irish SC bounces back. ASU is on a roll but SC has to be smarting after last week.

Notre Dame 45 NC St. 20 - I don't buy the Wolfpack as a football power. Unless ND has a post-SC hangover they get the win.

West Va. 37 Oklahoma St. 30 - I smell an upset or is that hillbilly road kill in Morgantown? Get the tear gas ready.

Terps managed to square their record at 4-4 with a 42-39 win over Indiana. Terps trailed at 14-0 and 16-7 before getting the offense in gear but it wasn't easy as the Terps were sloppy, committing 12 penalties for 133 yards. They can't do anything the easy way.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Been many years since I’ve said this with any real enthusiasm: How ‘bout them Dawgs!

Northwestern seems back on track with a win in OT for the 2nd straight week. We have a bunch of patsies down the road, so we SHOULD finish 9-3...though I suspect we'll lay an egg in there somewhere.

Crazy Ohio State game...they looked blown out!

I think Penn St. just ran out of gas. They played Michigan last week while OSU had a bye week. That's a tough nut to play UM and OSU back-to-back and have to play a rested OSU on their home field. PSU basically collapsed in the fourth quarter. Great game though.

Every year that Northwestern becomes bowl eligible is impressive. A tough Big 10 schedule coupled with restrictive recruiting based on tough academic standards means they have an up hill battle.

Real defensive battle underway between Oklahoma and Oklahoma St. as it is now 38-38 at the half. :rolleyes2: -- Al

I also see that #6 OSU is suffering a hangover from beating PSU last week as Iowa is kicking them all over the field, 48-17, in the 4th. -- Al

HUGE hangover and a flushed season as OSU losses 55-24! -- Al

PSU still hungover from that loss, as well, and gets it's second loss as MSU beats them 27-24. OSU and PSU now each have 2 losses and no shot at the championship. Bad 2 weeks for PSU. -- Al

Class move by Penn State head coach James Franklin at the end of the game against Michigan State. He saw that some of his players headed straight to the locker room after the loss without shaking hands with the MSU players so he ran over to them and instructed them to go and shake hands with the opposition. Here is a quote from the coach:

“I saw a few of our players running off the field, not going to shake hands. We’re going to win with class and we are going to lose with class, and we are going to shake people’s hands and give them credit because they deserved it.”

He is a class act, and that is another reason I am disgusted with my alma mater - U Of MD - he was the coach in waiting until the debacle with Ralph F. Ralph had hand picked him.....................................

On another note - Maryland lost to the mighty football program of Rutgers ^&grin^&grin but FSU needed a missed field goal by Syracuse to prevent an overtime game, go figure, that was a terrible display of football skills too of a game. Jimbo better get something going or he is going to be on a hot seat, maybe not this year, but they don't wait too long there.

UMd Terps are now 4-5 with the toughest stretch of the season to close out the year. They play Michigan, MSU, and PSU to finish out so it is all but guaranteed that they will finish 4-8. Actually, it is about the best record they could have achieved this season, considering they played 5 ranked teams (including 3 Top 10 teams). They were just buried by the schedule but it is what they wanted by the move to the Big Ten. May be a great move for money, but they have doomed the program to losing for many years until the powers-that-be decide to spend the money to compete. Like I say, doomed. -- Al

FSU can redeem their entire season by beating Clemson this weekend.

Now, I'm a big Navy football fan, but I also keep an eye on the other service academies. This year has been a special year for Army. They currently are 7-2 and are having great success with a running game that has been dominating and almost exclusive of a passing game. In 9 games, Army has gained 3,289 yards on the ground and only 266 yards through the air, an absolutely incredible stat. Army has had 4 games where they completed 0 passes (including 1 game where NO passes were even attempted). Army has completed 16 of 56 passes on the year. Of these, 8 completions and 141 yards came in 1 game against Temple. That means Army is 8 of 38 in their other 8 games, combined. With a running game averaging 365 yards per game, who needs an air attack? As long as you get the lead and kill the clock with the ground-pounders, it is a winning formula and so far this season, it has proven so. Army's 2 losses were to OSU and Tulane. Navy has a tough task this year to have a chance against Army. It will be an interesting contest. -- Al
