As a born and bred southerner, with deep southern family roots, I find your above comment reprehensible and grossly ignorant. But then again, sure, maybe that bathroom at the mini mart was a perfect symbol for the entire region.

I’ve also lived, as an adult, in the Midwest (3 different states) and Texas. Every place had its fair share of nimrods. Hmmmm, perhaps we have met.....

Rut, I am truly sorry if I offended you kind sir. My humblest apologies as I did not mean too. I'm simply relaying a story of my Alabama experience when I was moving my mom back to Texas from Alabama. At that time she was working for the government and got transferred there and then transferred back to Texas. I had just returned from overseas, where I had not been back to the US for 3 straight years (8 in total). So, you can (maybe) imagine that after serving my time, traveling the world, learning about other cultures, religions, FOODS, customs, languages, governments back to the greatest country on earth (my opinion) and then seeing a flyer for a Klan meeting outside of Montgomery? Wow. I thought that was stuff that I just read about in high school and from another time in our history. Nope, front and center in my face. I should have ripped it off the wall and urintated on it, but was so shocked as to what I was reading and more importantly frightened.

As a man of color, with a whole lineage of family of color who worked in the South as migrant workers they too had their fair share of indignities of prejudice. When my mom was a little girl she sat in front of the rest room crying to herself because she did not know which bathroom to go into as she die not fit the "Whites Only" nor "Colored Only" category. She was brown and there was not a entrances for brown people. It was my Grandfather who had to explain to her that was for the colored people (old term there) and that she could use the "Whites only" one...but hurry up.

So, like those who are taught racism at an early age, there are those of us who are taught to fear racism at an early age. Further, we are taught to avoid conflict, situations or areas that are historically persona non grata for minorities. So, what I am telling you Rut, is that I have the opposite type of mentality. Whereby, those of use who have been targets of racial slurs, attacks, taunts, humiliation, embarrassment because of skin color have no business further exasperating the situation by being in places were I might not be welcome. My mother has that fear, I have half the fear because I am from a different generation and my kids...well they don't give it a second thought because they have not yet been affected or experienced it. I still have to endure it now and then and as early as last summer I was singled out and belittled at an HOA meeting by, you guess it, an older caucasian women around my moms age who was the HOA manager. The only thing I could only figure at that time was it an act of micro aggression racism (thanks Jazz) due to my skin color. I was humiliated in front of my neighbors and afterwards some of my neighbors asked me "what was that all about?" I raised so much hell with HOA and management company that I vowed to never participate in the HOA again until she was gone. Thankfully, she was eventually replaced. Yet sadly, as far as I can remember in my life, I have experienced racism even when I was in the military. The funny thing is-is that all happened state side, but never overseas.

But, your right Rut, I should have not indicted the entire south in my comment as this situation is in Minnesota north of all of us! Which goes to show that racism exists everywhere including in my home state of Texas. As a matter of fact, Vidor, Texas is so bad with KKK that it is not even listed in the Texas Handbook of Places to Visit and yes when traveling down the I-10 I don't stop there for anything. Taught that lesson to my kids early on. A lesson that has been handed down from generation to generation for those of us who are of color and its just one of those things to stay safe...in my own state and country.

Regardless, Rut I did not mean to offend you with my ignorant, reprehensible and nimrodish comment. I've been called worse, but I own what I say and write and again I apologize to you sir for any offense and given the opportunity to meet I would apologize to you in person like a man and beg for your forgiveness. And that is why I responded to your post which was simply to explain where I was coming from, thats all. To me, not to answer or respond would be kinda chicken chit. No Rut, you my fellow collector in arms and forum friend deserved an answer and a apology to which I hope you accept.

Hard to separate what’s going on. You have many angry, rightfully so, black people mixed in with a lot (my viewing, it’s gotta be half) Antifa types just looking to cause problems.
I fear this being about Floyd ended a few days ago for many out there.

ZB,

Forgive my arrogance, but I had to look up "Antifa". I mean I dig anti-facisim, but uh with molotov cocktails and violence...no.

I'm wondering if your going to make a cameo on the Samuel Adams beer commercials where they highlight the relative from Bah-ston.

John from Texas

this is no protest...this is rioting and looting...I bet half the people out there don't even know the name of the victim...these are mostly opportunistic people taking advantage of a situation that the police can't control...

Mike,

We talked about this before...the looting. I just don't get it! It has nothing to do with the issue that is being protested. Nothing! I swear it takes away from the message, the memory of the victim and the just cause of protesting. *** does steallng merchandise have to do with his murder? It sooo stupid.

Anyway, I guess wearing mask to stop the spread has a secondary purpose...covering your face so you don't get seen looting. Looting and stopping the spread...God Lawd what have we come too?

Mike, we should have seen each other this past weekend. I was truly sad there was no show this year.

Wait until you see the covid spike in a week from all of this! That’s a boat load of people all together spreading this sucker around!

Zach,

In the Austin suburbs, the crowding in grocery stores is considerably worse than what was we saw on television among the protesters, looters, and rioters.

There's a strong disposition among Texans, native born and noob alike, against doing ANYTHING in the way of mitigation that's suggested in the press.

The majority of people here simply don't trust the institutional media any longer.

I should note that there's an age component to approaching COVID-19 in Texas, with younger residents having little interest in relatively simply mitigation like wearing a mask.

So, I fear that the state is in for some rocky times until some level of herd-immunity is achieved.

Thank you for putting the discussion back on track,

Agree, what I saw last night til 2AM EST was not about George Floyd in the least and that is just downright sad, maddening and infuriating all at the same time. Minneapolis looked like FSU (Free S... University) out of control. It is disgusting and they need to get control. That is a city under assault. No cause is being furthered, it is just small business and people being hurt. It makes me sad on one hand and mad as hell on the other. It is just not right.

What I saw in Oakland, Bakersfield, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Phoenix, Dallas and even the small crowd at the White House for Krist's sakes was NOT protest. It was anarchy and I think at the White House I saw extreme restraint by the Secret Service and Capital Police. They had bricks, fireworks, bottles and everything thrown at them and they didn't react, they just held the line, that is NOT right either and all of this action should be condemned from all circles and fortunately in the most part it is. I also really liked what the Atlanta Mayor said, it was an inspiring plea as well as a stern warning. The only problem is it didn't reach of the rioters and troublemakers, she needs to continue that message.

I don't pretend to understand the Civil Rights Movement, I was born in 1973, BUT I studied Dr. King a number of times in my academic life and fairly in depth and I don't remember any of his words advocating or condoning what we are seeing today. That is also a shame, he didn't stand for this, as a matter of fact, it is the opposite of his successful legacy. He is respected because of how he approached equality even when dealing with the hardened non budging racist he dealt with. His actions and demeanor demanded respect and he got that and is still revered today among people of all colors. As a matter of fact, he is a hero to people of all color who believe in equality.

Black Live Matters, Antifa, and other groups Advocate Violent Protests are bad apples and are horrible representations of what they supposedly represent. Quite frankly, I would now start to argue that they are Domestic Terror Groups. This is Anarchy and needs to be stopped.

Just about every ill of our society was on display last night. The ineptness of state and local governments, anarchists creating chaos, criminals, media pundits turning it all into a big reality TV show while lecturing us on the causes etc. Quite a circus. At least those Covid masks were put to use. My favorite was the deadpan reporter in Minneapolis interviewing folks as they looted a liquor store. Some great insights there. And the gas station on fire where the reporter noted it might be a good idea to "move back." I cringe when some idiot is just smoking at a gas station. A huge blaze like that was fortunate it didn't take out half the city. Today is a new day. Can't wait for that MN governor to explain whose fault it is and what the plan was last night. Maybe the national guard was supposed to supply the marshmallows for all the fires since they were doing nothing else.

Well, I am going to say this while holding a lightning rod, but I hope the VIOLENT protestors and lowlifes all get COVID and stop breathing otherwise viable air that could be utilized by productive members of society.

Doug, I saw all of that but to give credit to a few, I saw a young African American female filming the entire mess and they interviewed her and she was very upset saying a lot of what was said on this board that she was documenting these horrors as they were opportunistic criminals playing on the death of a civilian. She was a bright light in that horrid mess we all saw on television, hopefully more people locally start to speak out and more leaders emerge.

In the interim, the inmates need to be returned to the padded cells.

As I have mentioned, in the late 60's I was going to school at George Washington University in DC, from1968 through 1970. It was the time of Vietnam War protests, Civil Rights protests and anti-capitalism.
I volunteered as a student marshall and our function was to keep a buffer between the demonstrators and the police (CDU, Civil Disturbance Unit). There were massive demonstrations of tens of thousands
and the vast majority of protestors were peaceful and included families and many adults.

There were several groups of violent protestors that included anarchists and communists such as the Weathermen and SDS at these marches. Their tactic was to congregate at the rear of the peaceful protestors and throw rocks and coke
bottles filled with dirt at the police lines. When the police were pelted with these missiles they reacted with force and severity, rushing into the front ranks of the peaceful protestors and beating and arresting them.
I was caught in the middle and the student marshall standing next to me was hit in the head with a coke bottle and his head was split open, pouring out blood.
The strategy of these anarchist groups was to incite the police to violence and thereby radicalizing the peaceful protestors to join them. They wanted to destroy our system not reform it.

As has been noted here in this discussion the violent, criminal, vandals and looters are a very small minority of their communities. It is a shame that they will hurt their cause and dishonor the victims and those who
want real constructive change.

To be fair in understanding motives and promoting reform many in the African American and other minority communities have tried to go through our justice system with no results. So the frustration in many cases
is real and can boil over. If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

John,
We all tend to generalize based on certain experiences and you have explained yourself with honesty and humility.
I have worked with many good people from Southern States and we have plenty of racism and bigotry up here in the North.

Some of the views expressed here go against everything I believe and since I would never want to associate with these people in actuality, I have no desire to associate with them online. Therefore, this is my last post on this Forum. Adiós.

This is why we should have refrained from discussing politics on this thread, and on this forum in general. I ahve long counted Brad as a good friend, and he has left the forum because of the political discussion on this thread. I too have been guilty of participating, because it is a very interesting topic.I have enjoyed most of the discussion, especially as it has been for the most part civil discussion among friends, but when members of our community decide to leave because they find some of the commentary offensive, we need to take a step back. I think we should try to focus on the subject matter of the thread, the Covid virus. Lets all try to get Brad back in the fold.

.

There is no "guilt" involved in participating in this thread. What is being discussed is a fairly significant event. Similar in a way to the riots in UK several years ago.

i have been following the thread with interest but can't see what was so offensive. All agree the police officer was in the wrong and happy to see him charged. I think all here don't have a problem with lawful peaceful protests but what is happening has gone way beyond that. All posting are against that and expressed their views accordingly. I think Brad is being overly sensitive and I can't even identify what comments made go against his beliefs.

As as a side issue I thought John of Texas's point pages back about civilians not trying in interfere to help, for fear of being arrested, was a very good analysis.

Louis,
A lot of what is currently being discussed is speaking out against anarchy and violence. I know Brad well too and I cannot believe he is not for that, so his post caught me off guard. Unfortunately what is occurring is awful but it is real and serious. I think more people need to speak out and not tolerate this violence, not less.

Personally, I am offended as an American this is happening in our Country. It is so counterproductive.

Not sure if any of you saw the St. Paul Minnesota Mayor speak this morning, quite frankly it was one of the best speeches on this I have seen and I applaud him, more need to follow his lead and again, the Atlanta Mayor's lead. They are on the right track.

I actually think moderate people will unite on this and maybe once and for all the organized anarchists will be left in the cold, that is my hope.

Rich,
very true, the old statement that bad apples spoil the entire bunch cannot be more true here, and unfortunately it is a whole lot of bad apples, the situation is just downright sad and scary all at the same time and then on top of the current COVID crisis. I mean ,holy smokes, that is about all to say, it is insane. I could never have imagined the year 2020 quite like this so far.

By the way, been meaning to ask you, what years were you at George Washington? My late Dad got his Doctorate there.

My friend at work told me his Niece works at an assisted living facility and with each patient they wash down and change their PPE and she still got it.She's 25,healthy,works out.So no I don't believe everything that's being said. With everything that's going on I think there's a hidden agenda going on here and it's not pro-American

Just got back from the grocery store, there was an angry mob outside of it protesting.

"WHAT DO WE WANT?!?!………..JUSTICE!!………..WHEN DO WE WANT IT??…………..Well, as soon as the officer is tried in a court of law as afterall, these things take time!!"

It was a bunch of white folks, they haven't got this whole protesting thing down yet.

Good thing they weren't looting and burning the store; I never quite figured that one out. YOU shop there, so why loot and burn it down, where are you going to shop now?

Hey John, mighty big of you to apologize to Rutledge; yeah, you wouldn't want to offend a good old boy like him from the great state of Georgia. As he told us once before, his people had and held slaves, but they weren't in the KKK, you gotta draw the line somewhere you know!!

Too bad Brad left the forum; you don't like the tone and tenor of a thread, then don't read it, pretty simple really.

Politic and religion fellas; politics and religion.

Ok, got my popcorn ready; have at it.
