Hello Brad...glad to see you posting...hope all is well...I wash my hands like a surgeon operating on his mother...^&grin

Thanks Mike. I think a break was a good idea. When I told my son I was leaving, he said “this isn’t an airport. No need to announce your departure.”

I spoke with my long time friend and associate in Taiwan last night.
They did not have a major outbreak of the virus as they shut down travel
and quarantined as a nation early on. Today they have almost no cases
and everything has opened up. Only mandatory to wear face masks on
public transportation but almost everyone wears masks in public anyway.
Its now 36C/97F temperature in Taiwan but still he told me walking in
Taipei everyone is wearing a mask.
He said "it takes a disciplined society" to control the virus spread.
Of course Taiwan is an island nation with only 25 million population.

On the other side a good friend of mine here in NY told me that his wife
went out with friends for drinks last week and now 3 of the 6 women have
the virus. His wife has symptoms and is getting tested today.
The women are in their 40's and all have families who are now exposed.

Its not even close to being over and I'm afraid that without a national
response and cohesive policy this will go on and on.

Mike, wishing you the best. I’m sure I don’t need to mention about washing your hands, etc.

Best of luck.

Rich and Brad,

Really happy to see you posting again, my friends!

The numbers continue to look sobering. You also get the sense of COVID exhaustion and basically letting events run their course at this point. Doesn't bode well for society if a more significant threat has to be dealt with someday. Imagine what would happen if there were so many folks sick that they couldn't drive the trucks, keep the grocery stores open, and power on. Things would fall apart quickly. Almost no one can fend for themselves for more than a few days.

Went to a Supermarket this afternoon and only saw two other people among the shoppers wearing masks and yes people certainly appear to have become fed up and exhausted with hearing of COVID until it hits their own immediate family and friends and when the Sun comes out you get crowds at the beaches, which as we know is great for spreading this virus along with all the other ways and now just to top it off I read yesterday that another virus has emerged in China which can jump from Pigs to humans so along with the coming Winter flu there really doesn't seem to be a let up. Just goes on and on !

And there lies the rub; we as Americans are not a disciplined society, people want to do what they want to do and not be told what to do.

Like my moron friends who caved in and are having a July 4th party; good luck with that one.

They are predicting a much hotter July than normal here in the Northeast, which means wearing a mask is going to be uncomfortable and inconvenient.

Well you have two choices, deal with it and suck it up or risk getting sick or getting others around you sick.

As the saying goes, if your not part of the solution, then your part of the problem.

As I see more and more reports coming in regarding infections (one outbreak led back to a bar somewhere, EIGHTY FIVE people from that bar got sick), it's clearer and clearer to me that this thing is airborne, you get it from being around people who are socializing, laughing, talking, drinking, sitting next to each other...…………….sort of like at a July 4th block party...………:rolleyes2:

And if that happens, if he takes the corpse of Cam Newton and wins another super bowl, it proves that it was all Belichick, and he could have done it with anybody at QB.{eek3} I just don't see that happening.

Newton is 31 years old, basically agewise he's in his prime.

Yes, he's had shoulder and foot injuries, which for a QB, specifically a running QB are not good. He passed his physical and has been cleared to practice (whenever that will be).

Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for what Brady did here, but last year he reminded me a lot of Dan Marino in his last year as a Dolphin, constantly yelling at players on the field, making bad throws where you'd say to yourself "Wow, that's not the Dan Marino I know", he wasn't on the same page with his receivers all year long.

Same with Brady last year; he's 43 and I don't care how much avocado ice cream/vitamin water/whatever other goofy things he was doing, at some point, your body can't perform at a high level anymore.

If he wanted to keep playing, let him go somewhere else.

Not going to lie, I've cared virtually nothing about sports for the past 4 months, but this news got me excited.

I thought maybe I was overreacting until I stopped by my Mothers house yesterday and her next door neighbor/the Patriots hater saw me and came charging out of his house and said "CAM NEWTON!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"...……….at that point, I knew it was a good thing...………………

And like I said; everyone who was dancing on the Patriots grave in the media and on sports message boards right about now is going "Oh no, not again"...………………….:wink2:

Besides, who doesn't like good redemption story?

And imagine if it's Newton vs Brady in the Super Bowl, the tag line will be "The redeemed vs the Decrepid"...………….

April 6-10,764

May 1-63,871

June 1-106,195

July 1-130,123"

John,
Looking at these numbers, it's at least somewhat positive that the number of deaths is dropping month by month, it spiked by about 53K in April, dropped to 40K for May and now 24K for June.

PLEASE don't get me wrong, ONE death a month is one too many, but the number appears to be going the right way as the TOTAL number climbs.

With the spike in positives in Texas, Arizona, Florida and elsewhere, we'll see what August 1st looks like; if the number of deaths vs June drops again, we're trending in the right direction.

If the number goes UP vs June, then we are in deep ****.

You are right, we as Americans don't like to be told what to do. With freedom comes responsibility and sometimes you have to compromise or even give up some freedoms to remain safe and secure.
In addition we have a system of states and regions that want to fend for themselves. If people remained put that could work but we are a very mobile society and this virus spreads quickly...."like a forest fire".
My family is staying close to home and keeping our distance wherever possible. A very challenging time for everyone.

agreed...

Americans are not disciplined enough to do this 100%
we don't like to be told what to do...
and it's a shame...
cause this is mandatory in my opinion...
gotta wear the mask...

Texas has been lighting up the scoreboard for most new cases in the USA daily for at least a week now...
glad to see Gov. Abbott allowed our local mayor (Galveston Island) to shut down the state operated beaches for 4th of July weekend...

the overwhelming influx of tourists is just not prudent right now...
I know this is a hardship for local eateries, hotels and tourist related business's (bike/umbrella rentals...gas stations...convenience stores...etc...)
but I feel this is the right thing to do to encourage/enforce social distancing...
I hope this will stay in effect for a while and the daily new case numbers will drop...

the mandate from the City of Galveston is that the beaches are closed...
no entry to the sand...
no swimming in the Gulf of Mexico...
and parking on the Seawall Boulevard Strip is prohibited...
the sidewalks can only be used for exercising (biking/jogging/walking etc...)

both the beaches in Corpus Christi and South Padre Island had already committed to this earlier in the week...

gonna be a lot of mad tourists if they arrive and didn't know this...

I don't know why it is so hard to wear a mask. It is an easy thing to do and doesn't bother me at all. On the flip side, I have no issue visiting the beach, like I said, we never sit close to anyone anyhow, so no big deal there to distance. I don't really get bugged out with outdoor activities, again, we maintain our distance. One thing I am not doing is running out to a bar or anything like that. Additionally, when I am on the shore, we take food and grill in, being on the water, I have always wondered why I go out to eat down there, the view is better from the deck!!!!

So, I guess, long story short, making the best of it. Again, I am in the middle, i.e., I don't buy into hysteria and panic reactions, but also do not believe in arrogance and nonchalant when looking at this situation. I have relegated myself to the belief it will be here a bit, but it will pass.

I am actually surprised that there is not a larger spike right now.

TD

it's not impossible to wear a mask outdoors...it maybe very uncomfortable in the Texas heat...but not impossible...so a good portion of the beach visitors don't wear them...and I believe when you're outside practicing safe social distancing...the need to wear one is far less...but that hasn't been the case here...also while there is no law to make someone wear a mask...you can control the city/state owned venue where they choose to do it...you can just close it...and then nobody can go there...

Texas has closed all bars until further notice...if over 50% of your gross receipts are liquor related...you are considered a bar...I have always thought bars were mostly to socialize...to meet people...not just sit at the bar and pound down drinks by yourself...and if most people are going there to meet people...it kind of dispels/discourages the concept of social distancing...now drinking has not been banned...if someone is overwhelmed with the desire to drink...there are plenty of liquor stores in Galveston to get a bottle so they can get their fix on at home...and they don't even have to wear a mask at home...

right now...Texas is requiring mandatory wearing of masks in all business's...

Effective June 23, all residents and visitors to Galveston Island and over the age of 10 must wear a mask or face covering when in a place of business and whenever maintaining social distancing requirements is not possible.
Face coverings may be removed when:

 • Consuming food or drink
 • When at the beach or exercising outside
 • While in a building that requires security surveillance such as a bank
 • While driving along or with passengers of the same households
 • While pumping gas or operating outdoor equipment
 • When doing so poses a greater mental or physical health, safety or security risk

as there is no law in Texas about wearing a mask...the onus is being put on the business to make patrons conform...if customer refuses to wear a mask in their business...they are instructed to contact the police and they will be removed as an "undesirable"...

over 7,000 new cases today...getting higher every day...I don't want to cater to tourists who can't offer me the protection I am willing to offer them...

All,

NY, Jazz and Horus...glad to see you back!

George,

I noticed that too. The number of deaths declining that is. I am just so apprehensive to applaud that with the recent record breaking spikes here in Texas and Arizona. Its like we pushed "pause" and then "play" again and I fear the numbers between July and August are going to be sickening.

Mike,

You have watched the madness going on in Galveston day after day and weekend after weekend with horror. Now, its 3 doors down from you and that is so sad and could have been prevented. Just hunker down my friend and check your six to make sure El Cucuy is not behind you. Ugh.

I have been over shopping on ebay and have purchased more books than I can read and knick knacks for my new office downstairs. In fact, I just purchased a Pulaski corner display case from ebay to fill in a spot in my new digs. I'll post a pic when I get it set up, but this office is a dream come true; in the basement, lots of square feet, LOTS of space for the TS and other memorabilia that I have collected world wide and pictures both old and new to hang on plenty of walls. I got some old school black and white pics of family and even some that are sepia in color. So, forming and pouring concrete footers in the morning and office set up in the afternoon. The wife is painting a couple of accent walls in a metallic paint which should be pretty cool.

This week has been brutal in terms of the weather with a combination of the Sahara dust cloud pounding us and the off the charts humidity. This weekend we should finally clear of the dust cloud and will be hitting over 100 degrees by the 4th of July. I'm trying to get these footers poured before it really starts get hot. I know it sounds crazy, but theres hot and then there smoking hot and the latter has not come yet, but is on its way.

Then theres the virus which is spreading like wildfire here in town and our hospitals are getting to capacity. It just goes on and on and on and on and...

John from Texas

Mike, wishing you the best. I’m sure I don’t need to mention about washing your hands, etc.

Best of luck.

Brad,
Great to see you back! :smile2: I hope you and your family are well.

Best wishes,
Joe

Michael,
I believe you hit the nail squarely on the head here, and it is a shame. I expressed this same sentiment with my son on father's day, and he agreed.

Crazy thing about masks I've noticed when I have to go out, most folks have 'em on, but a lot of them don't have them on right. Or they do the dumbest thing and pull the mask down when speaking, like I saw someone do with a postal clerk the other day. I'm just sayin' when we mask up we gotta do it right.

Yeah, Joe just wear it and shut up 'bout it. Frankly, I am happy the city imposed the mask guidelines until August as it keeps the coughs and cooties to your self. We should never of relaxed that restriction, rather made it (at a minimum) a Federal Mandate for the public good. It is simple and makes sense and I have beat this point to death on this thread that masks will become the norm and when and if COVID is longer the public will demand that anyone with a seasonal sniffle or cough mask up for the sake of public health...like they do in Japan.

Mike,

I'll add to your discipline comment by saying (like I have said before) we as Americans are not displaying the proper attitude either. Your attitude towards the concern, problem or dilemma in turn spurs the motivation for discipline in ones decorum. Remember when nobody used to wear seatbelts? That wasn't too long ago when seat belts weren't the law and after a cold bath in the military about seatbelts (which I might add is so minuscule of a habit) putting your seatbelt on became a second nature act after being classically conditioned to initiate the act of driving. In other words, its second nature. Our country, is in its infancy of practicing that discipline and with repetition and practice, masks too will become a norm in our psyche. So, for right now its masking up whether your ill or not to stop the spread, but in the future we will all expect our fellow man to wear one as a part of the hygienic nomenclature while in public. For if not, we the public will either look down or crooked eyed at the offender, just like we do when we hear those awful words in a reported accident where the drivers or passengers were not wearing their seatbelts. It will be one of those "why weren't they wearing their seat belts" or "no wonder they didn't make it...no seat belts" The same mentality...I think...while be the same when flu season is upon us where we will reflect or cajole "I cannot believe so and so came to work, sick, coughing and didn't have the courtesy of wearing a mask" or "I have to go into work today so let me get my mask(s), etc so I keep it to myself". I believe that day will come, but in the mean time we have people invoking their constitutional rights to stave off mask wearing or what have you. Those folks in my opinion have neither the proper attitude nor a smidge of discipline in their everyday lives, but I guarantee they all wear seat belts.

John your neighbor

The NFL is hoping to have fans in seats this year and according to reports they may ask fans to sign liability waivers. I went to an estate sale this past weekend and the seller put up a notice that by entering into the house, we assumed the risk of contracting COVID and agreed to waive any liability against the seller and the house owner.

Never underestimate greed. The NFL owners would play this season if an asteroid were hurtling toward Earth to end all life as we know it. And there would be a traffic jam from fans heading to the game who believed it was all overblown. I read that 19 NBA players already have the virus. I'm all for some sports to help pass the time but it does seem reckless. Going back to work seems like a necessity. Opening Disneyworld and playing football not so much.

I hope that the government has to sense to shut down the stadiums. 50,000 drunk fans in close proximity in cold windy weather screaming their lungs out . . . there will be tens of thousands of new cases after each game. The greed and stupidy of some people is ridiculous!
