Just about half of my basement is filled with empty TS boxes to the point that its really starting to be a problem getting to my work bench and household utilities (water heater, furnace, water softener). I have shelving with nothing on them but empty boxes. I have 9 very large plastic storage boxes stacked on top of each other filled with empty boxes. I have stacks and stacks of empty boxes on the floor. Yikes . . . I have had it and have come to the realization that I need more space just to store empty boxes. Decided this afternoon to go to CostCo where I purchased 10 additional 27-gallon plastic storage boxes (on sale @ $7.00 ea). Will use these to store the loose boxes that are on shelves and on the floor. Once I have all these empty boxes contained I am going to rent a small self-storage unit and store everything in it. There's s brand new storage facility just 6 miles from my house and a 10'x10' unit is less than $80/month. Pay one year in advance and get 13th month free. Operation Basement Liberation is about to commence.

Has anybody else felt over whelmed with what to do with all the empty boxes you are keeping?

I certainly have a box storage problem. Most of my boxes are on the top shelf of the built in wardrobes in the bedrooms. I've been thinking of buying some plastic boxes that will fit thru the manhole in the garage ceiling so I can store boxes in the ceiling area. Attics and basements are rare in Australia, the roof-ceiling area is rarely utilised in this country. Has any one else tried this?

I kept mine over the years but through the lot out its liberating.

Mike...
it's a problem to some degree that all collectors that save their boxes have...

like you...I store my empties in tightly sealed large plastic tubs...it helps me keep them somewhat organized by manufacturer and genre...I have 2 closets full...and that's just the toy soldier boxes...

I have a large walk-in closet that I store all my buildings/structures/trees boxes etc...in...and it's full too...

I rarely will buy a set unless it has a box...as they make them so much easier to sell with the original box...I won't throw them away...

I'm thinking of moving the tubs into the attic just to free up some space...it's a problem...

like you...I display all my collections in my house...either in large scale dioramas or on a shelf...

I recently abandoned collecting a series that I have collected for many years just to make room for new stuff...there are so many things I want to collect...I just don't have the room...

Luckily I do not keep mine, recycled. Had a storage unit about 10 Klm away for a number of years for other collections costing $1400 a year, seemed silly, only visiting every 6 months to change items over. As I rarely saw them and they were not seeing the light of day, decided to sell them off and do away with the wasted financial cost of the unit. Win, win. Robin.

I have about 80% of my empty boxes in the attic above my garage. Out of the way but a major pain if I need to find a box in regards to a sale.
About 3 years ago looking for a box in the attic I took a misstep and went right through the drywall ceiling and took a ten foot fall to the concrete garage floor. Thank God I just received some bad bruises, no broken bones. Now everytime I have to go up I,m scared s---less.

I have moved away from the tubs and doing more compression and other seal-able bags. I had bought a bunch for a move, and found they are rugged enough and seal tightly. They are more flexible and easier to handle than the tubs.

I still use tubs some, and store a lot of my collection in easy to access containers. The boxes are going into backs more and more.

You can cut the cost down to $3 or $4 for the same room as a large plastic container.

I just get rid of the boxes the cost per square inch of storing them will never cover the cost of selling a set with or without a box......If you make the math you will come to that same conclusion

Toy Soldiers collecting is like chocolates eating
If you enjoy eating chocolates, you get rid of the packing . If you want to resale chocolates, you don't even open the packing If you enjoy seing/playing with toys ...........

Great responses, interesting thoughts and insights. I especially find it interesting that several members have disposed of their boxes altogether. I just can't bring myself to do that at this point. As much as I enjoy collecting and all the sets that are in it, once in awhile I do sell an item or two and the original box not only facilitates the sale but also makes it easier to ship. What ever trips your trigger . . .

I have the same problem and often feel like one of those crazy cat ladies when I see all my boxes. Not sure it is a healthy sign, but I like them. I also collect books and those folks are really pedantic nuts. So maybe TS collectors are ok at least by comparison.

you guys that throw your boxes away...
you might contact your dealer...
I bet you will find that they might pay the postage to them...
if you would ship back the empty boxes...

Boxes are a major PITA, but I keep them anyhow.

I think that they are important, in terms of storing both figs and models.

For models, they are a necessity for shipping.

And it's my understanding that they really impact resale value.

Several years back, I gave up and rented a 10x10, climate controlled storage locker.

Storing boxes may be a hassle/added expense, but if ever a time comes when you want to downsize your collection, you'll be glad you saved them, especially vehicle and scenery boxes. Without them, the resale value goes down the drain.

When I buy collections, my offer drops 75% when I am told there are no boxes.

I just picked up a 100 plus JJD figure set collection and finalized a deal on another 100 plus K & C/JJD/Conte/W. Britain figure set collection, easy as pie when there are boxes.

I keep all the boxes for my collection. Have you seen the prices empty Trophy boxes go for on Ebay{eek3}

I'm looking for a few (15-20) empty K&C single figure boxes, anyone throwing any away please throw them in my direct^&cool :rolleyes2: ^&grin

Stay safe

Martyn:)

I am currently under a box seige, I have boxes of boxes. I'd love to toss them as I never plan on selling the collection but can't bring myself to do it.

You're right. I'm starting to come to the same conclusion. Especially since the hobby is losing more and more collectors without an equal amount of new collectors.

Therefore, when you're ready to reduce or rid yourself of your collection, you're selling into a market with less demand. Yes, there are always exceptions.

Resale value verses ongoing storage costs. That is the question that you guys have to answer for yourself.

10 years ago, the answer was, always keep the boxes...Today, maybe not.

Toy soldiers are like cars as soon as you take them out of the shop they lost big money ! I’ve moved some of my collection on and sold them with out a box no problem
