Rob..

well said plenty of double standards from Blatter!!! Portugal were poor and a better team will carve them open at the back and midfield.

As long as Carrol is allowed to [play with rooney instead of wellbeck italy will have their hands full against us. Who cares about ugly football when your winning games. where did good footy get Holland??? Hodgson for me is a far better coach that Redknapp

I have to disagree, though I wouldn't rate Portugal as high as Germany or Spain, IMHO their back and midfield have been excellent, it's the number of goal chances that they miss that worries me. A better team might win against Portugal but the semis (again) is great stuff. The quality, touch, pace and beauty of their play in their last 2 games has been fine, much above most of what we have been watching, and certainly above what England has shown...:wink2:

Paulo...

I have wanted a wholesale change to the English team for many years and, think dropping Lampard, Terry and ferdinand would have been my first act had I been in the job. I would have used Micah Richards instead of Terry and culled the lot in one fell swoop. too many see the shirt as a fashion accessory rather than a privaledge to wear. I agree we have been playing poorly but, topped the group. I think we have already outdone what was expected of us as many in this country did not believe we would get through the group.

To beat Italy and germany we need defoe, carroll, and rooney to be on their game. I would always start with carroll as he will cause havoc to any defenders and, also works his socks of every game even when he is playing poorly.

I have to say that without the one who wishes he was Messi and, to a lesser extent Nani the portugese look an ordinary side (just my opinion). I think they rely on one player to much. Croatia, who lets be honest, were ordinary to the extreme last night still frustrated the opponents and on the break caused the portugese lots of problems.
Best Wishes

I agree with many points on this thread regarding England, both criticisms and positives. We just don't have the natural flair of a Spain, Brazil or Portugal, but we do have spirit. Funny thing, there was not a great deal of expectation for England at the start of the championship, perhaps that has spurred them on some, who knows. But now its knockout stage so anything can happen if we get past Italy. Thats a big IF of course. Whilst there will be no divided loyalty in my house, my grandad on my mums side was Italian and it was from him I inherited my Pasta addiction:wink2:.....but still come on England!{sm4}

Hi Mitch,
When it comes to goal scoring and attack, Ronaldo is our most potent weapon indeed, and we don't have Figo or Rui Costa anymore. But the back 4 (Coentrão and Pepe especially) have been outstanding. And Moutinho in midfield has been terrific. For now the midfield has been controlling games sooner or later. What we would need would be a great centre forward. But well, great stuff for a small nation.
About England, you are in fact doing the job and other teams have won championships «winning ugly» like tennis' Brad Gilbert used to say. But from what I've seen of English club football and to a lesser extent national team in the seventies and eighties, early nineties, I would really like to see a better standard, the one that made me like English football back then. I am not sure if it's just about players but about starting to play a more modern quality passing game as opposed to the long ball, fast possession loss game. On this will Rodgers at Liverpool have some impact in the middle/long term? I now prefer basketball but could go on talking footie for ever...Some other time I guess^&grin.

Best of luck to England,
Paulo

As mentioned above, IMHO you've had players and teams with great flair and skill in the past (think Liverpool, Keegan, Hoddle, Souness,Dalglish, Coppel, etc... yes I know 2 of them are Scottish...^&grin). Will you have them again at this level after a transition period?

As everybody in Europe and hopefully elsewhere knows the European Championships, second only to the World Cup in prestige, in national team competition has started.

The big surprise so far are the Dutch losing to Denmark; they could be in serious trouble. The goal, so to speak, is not to lose the first match. Germany managed to eke out a deserved win. Spain looked ok and Italy looked scary at times. Why the Spanish coach, Del Bosque, played a mostly strikerless match, is beyond me. It was a well deserved tie for each in what, aside from them, is not a terribly strong group.

England France tomorrow should be interesting.

Jazz...where have you been on the KC post?

Anyway let us talk about...

GERMANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ludwig,

Ahhh, that's where you're wrong. I lived overseas in my younger days in South America and lived in both Madrid and Barcelona. I am fluent in Spanish and follow La Liga. Spain is a second country for me.

If we make it to the final, same result in 2008!

So Brad my FRIEND OF MANY YEARS here on the forum, in tomorrows game of Italy v ENGLAND,who will YOU BE ROOTING FOR MY FRIEND??????????????????????????^&grin:wink2:

Rob

Rob,

You have to ask? ^&grin

Love to see England in the final. It's a wide open tournament and I think anyone can win.

As I've been down in Washington on business, I didn't see the Portugal game or any of the early week matches but did catch most of the second half of the Germany Greece game. Germany looks tough but it being Greece I don't take much away from that match.

I'm traveling back now and look forward to this weekend's matches where we should see very competitive matches with some of the best teams in Europe, if not the world.

Cheers,

Brad

Rob and Jazz......finally out of bed{eek3} Too many liters....you should have been here, some of the women ....oops that would get censored..

I must apologize if I have left any offenses posts .....

Now Jazz adopted countries are great!! Mine is America. I am German first with also relations in Wales and Scotland. Quite the mix no? I love love love Barcelona and have made many a vacation there in my life with friends and family. I love Wales and of course all of the UK.

OK back to the sport. I want England over Italy. I am not that optimistic as England has trouble with Italy and has lost at this same stage 7 out of 9 prior meetings. Both have strong starters with different angles. It will be great to watch. The game here is in 1 hr and 45 minutes!!

Spain will win. I do not think Portugal can hold. As I must go find prescription remedies for my hammer head right now I conclude that it will be Spain or Germany that takes it. This is ....as hungover to the bone..... Ludwig sees it...

I will be watching with you my brothers!!!

No offence taken here !:wink2:

Although my blood runs red and white and I'd love them to make it to the final, common sense and the odds say otherwise. I'm guessing Spain v Germany in the final but fully prepared to see Portugal be there instead of one of them. All three are very good teams and we are not up there with them right now, still I'm very proud of them and they have got further than a lot of teams.

As Brad has said before this is an excellent competition and at this level all the games are enjoyable, will be sorry when its over, roll on the world cup!{bravo}}

YOU SAID IT ALL RIGHT THERE ROB!!!

We are proud of all of these teams that have made it so far.

It is the SPORT and the hearts of these PLAYERS that makes me diehard a Fussball fan.Country is secondary. Other then Rugby there is no sport in my opinion with so much heart and soul!....don't get m,e started on Rugby or I am going to miss the games!!

Ludwig

Ludwig,

No offense taken. Sounds like you had quite the night though.

So far the match looks good. However, the French will need to do something. Although Ribery has had to change his jersey, unless he's hitting the ground, drawing fouls and annoying defenders, he's not playing his game. With Spanish ball control that's not easy.
