Guys, name your worst films! (1 Viewer)

Not sure why but the Four Feathers with Heath Ledger was a major disappointment which I blamed on the Director.
Enjoyed Dances with Wolves very much and have to admit I was surprised I enjoyed Mamma Mia (in my defence my wife made me watch it !!).

Brett

'My wife made made me watch' the universal excuse of millions of guys around the globe!(me too!;))

Tend to agree with lancer here as to be honest I have never completely understood the continual downer on Costner particularly on your side of the pond. Sure he has made some real crappy movies but so did Brando let alone De Niro and Pacino who between them have churned out a few turkeys over the years. I personally have always admired Costner's courage to take on roles within movies that just by reading the script had to be no-hopers as far as cinema-goers passing over their bucks at the box-office.

Some other roles I would give him kudos for are:

"Field of Dreams" sure whimisical and Capra-esque but sorry guys I thoroughly enjoyed it and prompted me to find out a little more of the back history of the game of baseball and it's hall of heroes which had always eluded this Brit as I'm sure our game of cricket does to most of you.

"No Way Out" a very tight well scripted thriller that is still very watchable today.

"Open Range" which in my book- being an immense western fan - was one of the best and grittiest westerns that came out of the Hollywood stable in years.

And "The Upside of Anger" once again I thought to be a powerful film with virtuoso performances from Joan Allen and Costner almost playing a Bull Durham in retirement. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Subsequently, just cannot understand Americans apparent national pastime of let's bash Costner because I could name a whole shed load of actors that have delivered a much worse body of work than he has

Reb
I am not sure what the majority of Americans think about Costner since like most majority sentiment, it is typically not mine.;) That said, Waterworld and the Postman, which he also produced and directed, were simply horrible films and no doubt he suffered from his association with those. The ones you mentioned are some of my favorites for him as well, especially Open Range, which he produced and directed. Of course, I really liked Dancing with Wolves and For the Love of the Game , in which he showed his baseball prowess by throwing every pitch. I also liked his performances in Silverado, another favorite of mine, The Bodyguard and Tin Cup.

Just to name 2: Borat and Brüno with Sacha Baron Cohen...
Saw the first one and was left with the "whats all the fuss about" feeling. Never got the point and found it unfunny. -- lancer

The American remake of "Godzilla", with Matthew Broderick. That was the only time that I was in a theater and actually considered walking out of a movie, it was so bad. Only the thought of losing the price of the ticket kept me from leaving.

I'll have to disagree on "Airplane!", but I understand that the humor might not be everyone's cup of tea. But I was already a fan of the Zucker- Abrahams team before they produced "Airplane!" ("Kentucky Fried Movie", "Police Squad"), and also, having seen all of the classic Irwin Allen disaster movies, I thought the spoofing was spot-on.

Prost!

Agree on both counts,Godzilla was dire.I didn't much care for the King Kong remake either,if memory serves didn't King Kong fight two T Rex?.I mean you can almost hear film producers;' Look since Jurassic Park we've got to jam in a T Rex or Velociraptor in any film we can'!

Police Squad,Airplane,Naked Gun,Top Secret are all great films, love that sort of humour.

"The hospital? What is it?"
"It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now!"

"...and don't call me Shirley!"

And "Police Squad!" ! Great send-up of all police shows from the early and mid-60s, starting with "M! Squad", whose opening theme was used for the series. The serious narrator, intoning the episode's title, which never matched the title that printed on the screen (and my favorite title, "Act II-Gesundheit!"), the guest start who was killed off in the opening sequence ("...and Murray Hamilton, as Abraham Lincoln")

Gotta see if it's on DVD...

I must be part of a very small minority as I like these movies.:)The worst movie I ever saw was called The Fiend. It started off with this guy walking, Then his face turned red (by a flashlight I think ) and he started to walk around like a cross between a zombie and the Frankenstein monster and that's all he did.We endured this for about 9 minutes (seemed like forever) until I was forced to turn it off.It was a long long time before I was ever allowed to pick another movie.:(It made Attack of the Killer Tomatoes look like a Oscar winner.

How can you not like Air America??????? Maybe not a great script or story, but definitely entertaining.

My take on movies is that if it entertains me for the time I put in, then its a good movie, it succeeded.

That being said, obviously some are better than others.

Regarding Star Wars, you have to be a real fan of the whole SW universe to get and like the prequel trilogy. I grew up on Star Wars so they were good for me.

Also, pls no slights to Kelly's Heroes, it is just too much of a classic. Where else can you get a loudspeaker on a Sherman driven by a Turk and the famous Moriarty??????

Seagal and Van Damme do their job, 1.5 hrs of action entertainment. Above the Law and Under Siege were pretty darn good. Van Damme, the original Kickboxer was cool too.

Finally, anything that wins an Oscar I usually hate, most of them are just not that entertaining.

The Hulk, fell asleep during it! The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Finding Neverland.

Best Regards,
Vick

Can't remember the name for sure but I think it was called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It was really bad.

Sorry Tom (and I really don't want to ignite my long running discussion with Bill about this-Hi Bill!;))But 99% of anything starring or directed by Gibson is pure undiluted...well you get the idea.Again sorry but Kellys heroes is crap and makes Gibson's films seem desirable.I have actually heard people call it a 'War film'.Its as much a War film as the Wizard of Oz is a ****ing statement on global warming, never seen such a pile of hippy garbage in all my life.

Apologies Tom,but you are without doubt in the majority who like KH so I will retire to my air raid shelter and wait for the torch carrying villagers!;)

Cheers

Include me also within that minority as I liked them both too-not classics or even good films by a long shot and both, especially the latter, very self indulgent outings for Costner.

But like I said in my first post most "bad/crappy/worst movies ever" have a at least one or two redeeming scenes somewhere amongst the dross and this was indicative in both of these KC outings.
Quite a few of the set pieces in both movies were extremely well filmed cinematic scenes which certainly entertained me.

Just so you know Rob, Kelly's Heros is one of my favorites as well.;) But then I am a bit of an old hippy so perhaps that is my connection. Funny thing about that little excursion in SEA, there were quite a few of us there.;) You are entitled to watch and comment on any film you like as far as I am concerned. In fact, it is no skin off my nose if you like "things" like Airplane that are about as appealing to me as fingernails on a blackboard.;):D It is just like that "why is .... greatest" thread; opinions may vary.

Bob mate,I defy you to find a redeeming scene in 'Mamma Mia'!:D

As a kid I had a huge crush on the Blonde Girl in Abba, she never returned my calls though, used me and threw me away she did;)

Now now Bill, you know there was no need at all to bring the K&C thread here;).I am perfectly entitled to post a thread like that in that area of the forum.I went onto another forum and gave my honest and somewhat complimentary opinion on a FL product.I was shouted down for my honest opinion, now I am being critized for supporting my chosen company on their own thread.I have had the courtesy not to go onto FL's thread on this forum and voice my opinions on the Stug, and if I have they have only been complimentary,I like to think I consider the feelings of others whenever possible.(except when I get wound up of course-but that hardly ever happens mate:eek:;))

I bring it up as an example of how different tastes and opinions can be; nothing more.:) Of course calling one's choice of something "the greatest" or another's choice "a pile of hippy garbage" do not rank among the more sensitive comments I have seen but I take it all in good fun; as should you. As I have said many times, it is much more how you say something than what at many times.;):D That said, no one, especially me, is criticizing you but whenever you state things in absolutes, you may expect to see some pushback from those with contrary honest opinions; kitchens have heat afterall.:)

Ok Bill I understand where you are coming from and you make some good points. But I will ask one last question for fear of ruining my own thread here!.With regards to 'sensitive' remarks. Can I take it then, when on another forum, when members make downright rude remarks about certain producers and their product, lets say K&C,you would point this out to them even though you yourself are a fan of their particular favourite producer?.

Rob

I can promise you that I try my best not to be rude and to appreciate that others have different tastes. I also do and will try and call them the way I see them, no matter whose product is involved. My point here is not that everyone needs to screen their comments for potential offense or that we all need sensitivity training but rather simply that what some consider obvious or hold deeply may be quite contrary to the views of others and there is nothing wrong with contrary comments that point that out without personal animosity. While I am sorry that you consider one of my favorite movies "crap", I rather liked the "hippie" analogy and of course the movie did itself feature a "crap game" so what's the harm?:D I am sure you will enjoy Airplane no less as a result of my observations and certainly I am no less excited that KH will be coming out this year in BR. The list of things in my collection we can watch when you come over is slowly shrinking however but at least I have BoB and soon I think, In the Loop.:D

Again more than fair Bill.;)I apologise if my use of the word crap offended, there is a slightly different meaning between the UK and US versions I think.Over here its not really seen as quite such a ****ing term as it might be stateside. If you have a 'pretty crap' morning its not as bad as saying 'my morning was s***!.Are you still with me here Bill;):D
