Mike Tarantino's Toy Soldier Collection (3 Viewers)

Correction on post #578 which I identified as ACW4 ELLSWORTH'S ZOUAVES which was hand written on the label. I was digging through my garage "collection" and I found a few more Trophy sets. One of them was identified as ACW4 3RD MARYLAND GUARD ZOUAVES which I believe to be the correct designation of the set on post #578. I checked an old catalog and found the description of ELLSWORTH'S ZOUAVES as wearing blue tunics with red trousers, which these obviously are not. This wouldn't be the first time I have bought something at auction that was not correctly identified. So, this means I have a duplicate set of ACW4 3RD MARYLAND GUARD ZOUAVES and don't have ELLSWORTH'S ZOUAVES.

Great looking ACW sets, Mike. I think having two sets representing the great state of Maryland is a big plus for your collection, especially since they wear such a fine uniform. ^&grin -- Al

Thank you, Al. They are wearing great uniforms, but I don't know about needing two sets that are exactly the same. If I am not mistaken, they were a Confederate Regiment.

Did anyone notice that the sculpts for the heads in the Iron Brigade set had changed from the standard head sculpts that had been used on Trophy's figures for years. Interestingly, the Iron Brigade terrain bases are dated 1997, while the terrain bases on the 4th Kentucky are dated 1999, but revert back to the standard head sculpts. This is a mystery to me. Maybe Martyn can shed some light on this.

I went back and photographed again the first three sets which were too light and washed out because I didn't use a flash. Here are the ACW1 4th Kentucky, ACW1 54th New York, and ACW3 54th New York with richer, deeper colors.

This is Trophy's Set No. ACW32 - 11TH INDIANA (WALLACE) ZOUAVES. I believe the regiment's colonel was Lew Wallace who later wrote the novel "Ben Hur." In spite of the grey uniforms, this was a Union regiment. The addition of the drummer is a nice touch.

I recall that Lew Wallace became a General and I think but am not completely sure was involved with emancipation in Md. There was a book written about him a couple of years ago that was quite well received. If anyone is interested, I can provide the title and author.

Beautiful figures. You gotta love the Zouave uniforms. Maryland Confederates in blue, Illinois Union in gray. Uniforms at 1st Manassas were so varied it's a wonder that friendly fire didn't cause all the casualties. -- Al

I am especially found of the ACW Zouaves because of the color and variety of their uniforms. I have at least three dozen ACW sets from Edmund's Traditional Toy Soldiers which specializes in 1861 units with a wide variety of colorful uniforms, which became more practical and standarized as the war continued.
