Mlb 2022 (2 Viewers)

Reading the new book on Jim Thorpe who baseball played for the NY Giants among many other sports. Interesting to read about early 20th century sports including baseball and football. Those guys had real stamina. Baseball pitchers with several complete games in the World Series. Football players with no helmets. The same players played on offense and defense. If they had to leave the game, they were not allowed to return. There were a number of deaths.

I can't believe there's hardly any complete games anymore. Pitchers from generations past were able to have long careers and were effective right up to the end of their careers.

That’s not quite correct. The numbers have been declining for years.

In the 40s the number was 45%, in the 60s, 24%, the 80s, 15% and so forth.

Today, good pitching is hard to find and (and expensive) and teams are not going to risk arms for an extra two or three innings per game.

Yes the numbers have been declining but why, were the oldtimers tougher, able to play injured? Yes MLB caliber pitchers are hard to find but we have a much larger pool to choose from as the caribbean is a gold mine for talent and and our population is much larger than 50-100 years ago. I cannot see paying 20 million or perhaps even more for a pitcher to play maybe 20-25 games a year and and pitch maybe 5 innings a year.

Charles "Chief" Bender pitched three complete games in the 1911 World Series. You won't be seeing anything like that again.

Al...congrats...another good win for you...can't wait for you guys to leave town...lol...not so much fun for me the first 2 games...8 hits and 1 run in 2 games...hard to win with that kind of offensive production...your starters have stymied the Astros...hope we don't get swept tomorrow...

Mike, the back to back starts of 8 innings and 7 2/3 innings are the longest back to back starts for the O's since Brandon Hyde took over as manager in 2018. Hard to believe but that is where O's SP's have been until this year. Been a good series for the O's so far but I rather imagine that comes to an end with Verlander on the mound for the Astros on Sunday. -- Al

Al...after two games...the Astros have averaged a 1/2 run per game in this series...won't take much to beat Verlander if we can't score...lol...

I would still put my money on Verlander.:wink2: The O's starter is Austin Voth, a 30 year old former Nats pitcher that the Nats gave up on and DFA'ed earlier this season. Voth has been reborn with the O's, a totally different pitcher and much more effective. Voth was 9-8 in 5 part time years, with a 5.70 ERA, while with the Nats but has turned in a 4-1 record with a 2.85 ERA in 11 starts while with the O's. Can't explain the complete turnaround, perhaps pitching philosophy, perhaps coaching, perhaps change of scenery, perhaps just finally given a chance as a starter, who knows? Whatever is responsible, Voth has been outstanding with the O's. Today will be a good test for the reborn Voth. -- Al

Glad to see insanity in regards to collecting pieces of cardboard has not abated this century. The finest known example of a Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card has sold at auction for a record $12.6 million. It is the highest total for a piece of sports memorabilia. I'm a huge baseball fan, a huge Mickey Mantle fan, but I find this just incredibly idiotic. It's a piece of cardboard, with a picture on it, and that's all it ever will be. Don't get it wet... :rolleyes2: -- Al

The O's pushed the Stros and Verlander to the very end, I'll take 2 of 3 in Houston all day long!!

Sammy...
don't know if you watched the game or read the box score...
Verlander left after 3 innings with soreness in his calf...
he was scoreless...
bad series for the Astros...1 of 3 is bad...but no run production is a negative trend...by either team really...
10 runs in 3 games...
still...congrats on winning the series...
I know you guys are fighting for #6 spot...

The Yankees lost two out of three to the AAA's this weekend.

LMFAO.

The Red Sox stink, the Patriots aren't much better.

That's all I've got.

The NYY's need to find the 'On' switch that apparently was turned to 'Off' at the break. Hard to believe it's the same team. George, don't feel too bad about the Pats and the Sox, I have to deal with the Nats and whatever a Commander is supposed to be. Jeez, what the heck is a Commander in football. They should have stuck with WFC or *** or whatever. Gonna be a couple of bad seasons around here. -- Al

During my hiatus from watching/following the Giants I have watched a few A’s games.

I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable baseball fan, yet I do not recognize one player on Oakland’s roster.

I am amazed they can score, let alone win a game, especially against the best team ever, the 2022 Yankees (according to ESPN and MLB Network).

The Dodgers are now at +285 in runs scored differential. No other team in MLB is above 200. The Dodgers do seem to play a lot of bottom dwellers of which there are many. They have feasted on those non-playoff teams.

Dodgers and Mets coming up this week. Three games in NY. I happened to see the ticket prices thinking this would be a hot series. They were listed between $5 and $12. LOL. I'm sure those are nosebleed seats, but you couldn't go to a Little League game for those prices.
