Mlb 2022 (3 Viewers)

The awesome Nats are now 49-89 on the season and only need to go 14-10 to close out 2022 with less than a 100 losses.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I see MLB is going to bigger bases, a pitch clock and defensive shift limits in 2023. Players are not happy about it.

I can understand the clock and the anti-shift stuff, but bigger bases? I guess it's a safety measure but I see it as a first step towards outlawing the stolen base. At least they did away with the Little League 7 inning doubleheaders this year. Now to get rid of those pesky wooden bats and go with metal. Who doesn't love the plink of the metal bat on ball? -- Al

I do think they have to try to liven up the game. I'm a traditionalist but the game has evolved in the last 20 years and I don't really think for the better. Top batting average is only .328 .Less than 20 players are hitting over .300. I have never seen anyone hit .400 but I did see George Brett hit .390

In terms of BA., I remember 1968 when only 6 players hit .300 or better and 5 0f those were in the NL, led by Pete Rose at .335. The AL had one player over .300, Carl Yastrzemski at .301. It was truly the Year of the Pitcher and led to rule changes like the lowering of the mound. Things change. -- Al

Yes I remember that year only I didn't realize only 6 players hit over .300. Didn't they also change the ball the way they were making them?

Honestly can't remember if any official change to the ball was made but the ball seems to change from season to season anyway. :rolleyes2: -- Al

In general I feel like any change that the players oppose is good for the game.

I like the changes, especially the banning of the defensive shift. People watch the game for offense and that will improve. That will actually help pitchers because the premium on good pitching will get even more expensive.

The game has to change because games take too long and whether the rest of you (who are mostly older anyway) like it or not the pace of play has to change to attract newer audiences who like faster moving action. The NFL recognized this by emphasizing offense (and de-emphasizing defense). Most of you complain about basketball but it’s got a lot of action, which is why it’s very popular.

These are steps in the right direction.

Getting rid of or modifying the defensive shifts is OK by me and anything that improves pace of play is a good thing as long as the game's integrity stays intact. Games just take too long with all the fiddling around between pitches, batters stepping out to adjust a batting glove, etc. Getting the pace back to about 15-20 minutes (closer to 15, please) per full inning would be an improvement IMO. Half-hour innings and I start flipping channels... -- Al

# 696 for Pujols last night. I hope he gets to 700 which would be a great ending to a great career and I'm glad it's with the Cardinals.

O's picked the wrong time to start a slump, going 2-6, including 1-3 against the Jays, a WC rival. Now 5.5 back of Seattle for the final spot and only 1 game up on the red hot White Sox. Things are getting tight with 22 games to go. -- Al

He did it! # 697!!!
Mark

He is a superior home run hitter and an even better human being:

The ball was caught by Pirates fans Matt and Samantha Brown, who met with Pujols after the game. The pair was attending the game on the one-year anniversary of the death of Samantha’s father. When they offered the historic home run ball back to Pujols, he declined, insisting that the ball would mean more to Samantha than it would to him. He also signed two additional baseballs for them.

The bluebirds are killing my O's playoff chances 🤬🤬 each time we sneak up on the Rays the Jay's knock us back down..oh well, just to be saying playoffs in September has been a awesome ride and the future looks bright for my Orioles.

Yep. O's picked the wrong time to go bad against the Jays. After winning 6 of the first 8 against the Jays, the O's have now lost 6 of the last 7 against them, all but killing their playoff chances. All is not lost but things are going to be tough now. -- Al

From a dedicated sports fan, I like the direction that Baltimore is headed.

I know that winning a World Series matters the most but the O’s were recently the worst team in baseball.

Yet, according to Sportrac they have the lowest payroll and they are still in the playoff conversation.

Being above .500 at this point in the rebuild is a win, no doubt they will be actual contenders soon.

Great post. It sure has been fun watching the O's play some meaningful baseball in Aug/Sept for a change. Really looking forward to next season as well as still hoping for the playoffs this year. -- Al

Fun with numbers: The Mets last topped MLB in team salary in 1989 with a total of $21.3 million. This season the Mets will lead MLB with a total team salary of $273.9 million. Times have sure changed. According to ESPN, Scherzer, DeGrom, and Lindor total $103 million for the season, more than 8 other clubs pay their entire team. -- Al

Thank god for Uncle Steve. DeGrom, assuming they re-sign him, will probably cost $50 million. They have a lot of FAs to sign, including Diaz and Nimmo. I’d like them to take a try at Judge but I don’t think that will happen. Hal supported Cohen’s purchase and I don’t think Cohen would try to take Judge from him. In addition, even billionaires have budgets. That’s how they become billionaires.
