Nice try. Phillies and Padres are this years Braves.

I've always been a Braves fan, they are originally from Boston and two of their best pitchers are from MA, Tom Glavin/Billerica, Steve Bedrosian/Methuen, so slow your roll.

Speaking of rolls, they should have rolled the Phillies.

They blew it.

Well, you sure called this one, much to your chagrin, I'm sure. The games were fun to watch but now that 2 of the best teams are gone and a third on the verge of being gone, MLB and it's financial supporters are probably tearing their hair out. Can you imagine the audience for a Cleveland/San Diego WS? Big hit in those 2 cities, the rest of the nation, not so much. MLB is right now trying to figure a way to get the NNY's at least to the next round. I could deal with Houston v Phillie, but I was hoping, as many were, for LA v Houston or NY, (as was MLB, I'm sure). Congrats to the winners, they earned it, and it's back to the drawing board and loan departments for the others. Looks like I might have to learn a player or twos name on Cleveland... -- Al

No words really, just a stunning loss; image as you said we've got 3 100 plus win teams out, none of them advanced to the championship series, nevermind the World Series.

And yes, MLB must be thrilled at the prospect of a San Diego/Cleveland WS, although I'd 100% watch as either SD wins their first, or the GuardIndians win their first since Christ was in a crib.

The Yankees are still alive and Houston is a wagon, so let's not get ahead of things, still a lot of baseball to be played.

Still in awe over Garcia yesterday; to come in in that situation and be lights out, very happy for that kid, man he was nails.

The Padres completely outplayed the Dodgers. They were the better team for the entire series. Not even close. Freeman was the only Dodger who showed up. Roberts needs to be fired. He has choked away too many playoff series to lesser teams with his bonehead decisions. Even going 162-0 shouldn't cut it if you lose to the Padres. Starting Kershaw in game two. Pulling Anderson after five innings when he is throwing a shutout? The old timers must be rolling in their graves. Who is looking forward to that Cleveland/SD World Series? At least it frees up a lot of time.

To be honest, with no dog in the fight, I would love to watch an SD/Cleveland WS, simply because of, as you said, the historical meaning of the outcome. Just don't think the rest of the country would care much. -- Al

Garcia was lights out tonight, he basically won that game for the Astros, good for him, he pitched his *** off.

The better team won and is moving on, best of luck in the ALCS, they'll be rested and ready.

Garcia is really gonna struggle with that new 15 second rule next year...
it takes him 10 seconds just to get through his rock the baby twice and double 2 step before he even releases the ball...
Astor's pitching coach really needs to work on a less complicated routine in the off season to speed him up...
he's got to be the easiest pitcher to steal 2nd on in the entire league...

Thought Turner played pretty well, but Freeman and Turner weren't enough. Agree about Roberts. Just how many chances does a manager need to get a loaded team to the WS? A few more, evidently, in the case of Roberts. -- Al

LOL. Yep, that 15 second rule is going to be a problem for some... -- Al

That's his thing though, it's what he does, gets him into rhythm.

And congrats to the Astors, first time in the ALCS era to get to 6 in a row, no other team has done that, the A's got to 5 in a row in the 1970's.

They change managers, lose players to free agency and just keep rolling along, that's a nice achievement.

I was so torqued off when Betts turned down a 300 million dollar offer from Boston as he wanted to test free agency, forced their hand and they traded him and got garbage in return, then he immediately signs an extension, he was awful this series.

Big money player, small time performer when the lights are brightest, he stunk in the 2018 WS vs the Dodgers too, the rest of the team carried him that year.

I really don't get how Roberts remains their manager as he blows chance after chance; again, when the lights are brightest, he shrinks, pretty easy to bludgeon Colorado and the Pirates during a 162 game season, beating a team in the playoffs, not so much.

Al...
after watching last night's game...
I concur...and they really do need to speed things up...

not sure this is the answer though..
I see lots of pitchers take 30-45 seconds to get situated...
this is gonna be a problem for a lot of pitchers...
maybe 30 seconds would be a better time frame...

I didn't realize that in the playoffs they don't start the 10th inning with a man on second base...
that surely could of sped last night's game up...
but I do like that format cause it makes you earn a run from scratch...
instead of a small ball strategy with a bunt and a sacrifice to score...

Astros are very lucky that they finished in 3 and can rest their starters and bullpen for the next series...
that's a big advantage to start a new series with the top of their order...
Verlander is scheduled to start as the Game 1 pitcher...
that will give him a full weeks rest to digest and hopefully forget that last outing...
hopefully can do better than 10 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings...

The seven-inning game would be a huge improvement. A change that won't cut into the owner's profits like a shorter season and shorten the games to the point that fans can actually watch them without going from childhood to the nursing home before they end. They are just waiting for the last of the baseball purists to die off. A few more years.

Your right about us purists as I would not want shorten games and shorten seasons. That would affect seasonal and lifetime records. And we purists love our statistics.^&grin

Yeah, unfortunately he is also right about we purists and just a few more years...geez, geez...cough, cough... {eek3} -- Al

It’s true the Phillies and Padres completely outplayed their opponents but ask yourself why. Starting back in May there was no team hotter than Atlanta all the way through the end of the season. They did very little wrong. However, the new playoff system hurt them.

They didn’t play a game between Thursday and this past Tuesday. Baseball is an every day sport. You can’t sit for four or five days and expect to be fresh. Meanwhile the Phillies, who almost blew getting into the playoffs because they played so poorly down the stretch, went into the Braves series hot after beating the Cards. The Braves and the Mets had a great race down the stretch but for what? For nothing because it was ultimately meaningless. I’m obviously not a Braves fan but in my opinion MLB did them no favors , to put it mildly.

Consider this: three teams won over 100 games in the NL and all they have to show is three victories, combined.

Things that will never happen in MLB...Return to 2 divisions within each league...no WC teams, just division winners to see who goes to the WS. I know the money makes this format impossible, but it would take the 4 legitimate best teams with no excuses allowed in a 2-team playoff system within each league. Well, I can dream, can't I? I also know it is much more likely that the importance of the regular season will be further diluted by adding more WC teams, rather than eliminating them. MLB must find some way to put winning your division regular season title back on top of the crucially important podium. -- Al

Even in the two division system there were upsets: Mets beating the Reds in 1973 and Mets losing to Dodgers in 1988.

Upsets are the name of the game, but it should be upsets between the best teams possible. Believe me when I say, I know upsets...Colts/Jets, Orioles/Mets, Bullets/Knicks. 1969 was a rough year...waaaaah! -- Al

The Dodgers loss felt inevitable. Same story, different year. They play the hot gutsy team that goes on to win the WS. How many times in recent years has the team that "upset" the Dodgers in the playoffs gone on to win the WS? I've lost count but it has happened a lot.

Mets played poorly or average this September. They stopped hitting and then the pitching got a little iffy. This all culminated in that three game sweep by the Braves the last weekend of the season. They stopped hitting at the wrong time. It wasn’t hard to predict a Padres win. The Padres were the better team that weekend, sad to say.
