Mlb 2023 (2 Viewers)

No doubt come from behind win was my most favorite win of the year for the Orioles against the @#$%% Jays....really taking a dislike for Toronto, they biitch more then they play...a sweep today would be sweet but the Bullpen has been used frequently and needs rest, but in hopes we can pull one out today.

Good weekend in the DMV as the O's swept the Jays and the Nats took 2 of 3 from Detroit. O's now 31-16 and only 2.5 games back of Tampa. Both the O's and Nats are doing better than I expected them to do. Would have been happy to see the O's a few games over .500 at this point but to have the 2nd best record in MLB and be 15 games above .500 is just incredible. The Nats are a much less impressive 20-27, and in last place in the NL East, but they are much more competitive this season and have 5-6 more wins than I thought they would. -- Al

The Nats get a ton of grief for not signing Harper, Rendon, Soto and Turner.

However this year:

They are hitting a combined .278;

They have 57 total RBIs;

and they have 15 home runs.

Not all that impressive and actually pathetic when you consider that their 2023 salaries total $101.77 mil.

Yep. I keep track of these former Nats. Soto just recently has started producing for the Padres; Rendon has been underperforming since signing in LA and has been very injury prone, can't stay on the field; Turner has not really gotten untracked in Philly; Harper just off the IL and is warming up nicely but really hasn't given Philly the bump they had hoped for on his return, still, he is close to being where he should be. Interesting that all 3 of their teams are among the seasons big disappointments. Evidently, money can't solve all baseball problems or guarantee performance. Who would have guessed that? -- Al

We are 48-50 games into the season. There are 5 teams with 30+ wins, and 3 of them are in the AL East. The Oakland A's at 10-40, are off to the worst 50 game start since the 1932 Red Sox who started with the same record, and ended the season at 43-111. The O's, meanwhile, on the heels of 2022's remarkable overall improvement, continue to improve having posted a 31-17 record after 48 games, an 11 game improvement over 2022's 20-28 record. The O's are no fluke. -- Al

The best team so far this year lost 20-1 last night.{eek3}

Al:

Great post.

I get it, lots of baseball left in those contracts but I feel like the media forgets once players sign these huge deals and no one gives credit to organizations that avoided the massive signings once the stats do not equal the money.

Not sure what the City Connect uniforms are all about?? Just another way for Nike to make money but as far as the Orioles City Connect uniforms that look like garbage 🗑 all black on black??? What?? ..oh yea, 0-2 while wearing these pitiful looking jerseys..please bring back the home Whites.

Sammy, I noticed that the jersies have misspelled the city name...should read Ballmer across the chest to be true city-connect. -- Al

I’ve never liked the City Connect jerseys. Thank goodness the NY teams haven’t done them yet. The worst is the Giants one. That is quite unflattering.

O's wore home White jerseys and get a Win, throw those black jerseys away please!!!!

Don't expect it to last too long, but this AM, the Nats are no longer the worst team in the NL East. They are tied with the underperforming Phillies for 4th place (aka, last) with a 25-32 record. Nats are scrappy and SLOWLY improving. For what it's worth, the Phillies have the 4th highest payroll in MLB while the Nats are 24th. The Philidelphia Nationals, Harper, Turner, and Schwarber are making $73 million this season, compared to the Nats total payroll of roughly $63 million. Cha-ching! -- Al

Harper is doing ok, Turner started off good but has steadily went down hill Schwarber can hit homeruns but that's about it as he is a sub.200 hitter. And the pitching sucks!
Mark

It appears, from recent reports, that Stephen Strasburg may not be able to ever pitch again. Reports say he has severe nerve damage and has basically stopped any rehab attempts because of exercise related pain. A truely unfortunate (probable) end to a very promising career for the 34 year old 2019 WS MVP. Because of ongoing physical problems, he has only pitched in 8 games since 2019. He will always be a hero to the fans of the Nationals for helping to bring the WS title to DC in 2019. -- Al

As it stands, I would love to see Harper still in DC, Turner, too for that matter. In another direction regarding ex-Nats, Anthony Rendon has been a disaster of a signing for the Angels. He can't stay healthy. He has only played in 187 games in the 3+ seasons with the Angels and that includes 52 out of 60 games in the lost season of 2020. He has hit only 21 Hr's with LA in the time there compared with the 136 Hr's hit in 7 seasons with the Nats. Rendon's nick-name in DC was Tony 2-bags as he averaged 35 doubles a season in DC (245 total) but only has 38 total in LA. Injuries have just gutted Rendon. Too bad as he was an absolute lynch pin to the Nats WS title. -- Al

Turner is probably too much pressure on himself because of his new contract. He may not bounce back this year but I’m sure 24 will see him return to normal.

Al:

Great post.

He was one of the main reasons why they won the World Series.

He also seems to have taught the Nats a valuable lesson in free agency.

Strasburg was the one player they signed to a huge contract and that contract paid zero dividends.

Rendon, Turner, Soto and even Harper have not paid any championship returns on their massive contracts.

Not wining is terrible, not winning while you over-pay your roster is even worse.

Really sucks when management signs some of the worst contracts imaginable...Orioles still paying O-Day, Chris Davis contracts but my fav is Bonilla until 2028 🙄 not even sure what year he retired but it was many years ago ..my boy made out like a bandit on that deal.

Hey Sammy, do you remember the Glenn Davis trade? Ranks up there with the Baltimore contracts debacles. Jan. '91, the O's sent RHP Curt Schilling, RHP Pete Harnisch, and OF Steve Finley to Houston for Glenn Davis. Boy, did we ever get fleeced on that trade, one of the worst in baseball history. Davis lasted 3 years with the O's, playing in only 185 games, batting .247 while hitting only 24 HR's with 85 RBI's. We all know the heights Schilling reached while Pete harnisch had a decent 13 year career, winning 95 games after leaving the O's, and Finley, after his first 2 years in Baltimore, played another 17 years, becoming an All-Star, winning Gold Gloves, batting .271, and hitting 304 Hr's. That trade still gives me nightmares. -- Al

Yea, I remember parts of that deal, mainly the part where the X Orioles had mostly success elsewhere..🙄
