I see deGrom has moved to the 60 Day IL. I think this means a late June, early July return, at best. Mets must feel like the decision to not sign him was a genius move at this point as deGrom has been out since the end of April and pitched in only 6 games. Actually. Texas hasn't missed him. They are killing everyone without him. -- Al

Just saw an update that deGrom is headed to surgery to repair his UCL, possible 2nd TJ surgery. At any rate, he's done for the year and maybe 2024, as well. Mets knew what they were doing with deGrom. -- Al

RHP Jordan Lyles led the O's pitching staff in 2022 with a 12-11 record, with a 4.42 ERA in 32 starts. Solid work. He went to KC where 2023 is proving a nightmare. In 13 starts he is now 0-10 with a 6.89 ERA. One reason for the fall might be that he has allowed 18 Hr's in his 74 innings, so far. -- Al

The A’s are literally trying to pull a “Major League” except things are not going according to plan.

While Bryce Harper’s antics can wear on me, it was a class gesture when he wore cleats in support of the A’s staying in Oakland while playing at Oakland this past weekend.

Don't expect it to last too long, but this AM, the Nats are no longer the worst team in the NL East. They are tied with the underperforming Phillies for 4th place (aka, last) with a 25-32 record. Nats are scrappy and SLOWLY improving. For what it's worth, the Phillies have the 4th highest payroll in MLB while the Nats are 24th. The Philidelphia Nationals, Harper, Turner, and Schwarber are making $73 million this season, compared to the Nats total payroll of roughly $63 million. Cha-ching! -- Al
I was right about how brief the Nats getting out of the cellar lasted. Lasted until game 2 of the Philly series. Since tying the Phillies for 4th place in the NL East at 25-32, the Nats have collapsed. They have gone 2-11 since then and have taken a firm grip on last place in the entire NL. They have been awful. It is like they threw a switch from being 'scrappy and competitive' over to 'let's sleepwalk and play like ****e for the rest of the season'. They are beginning to piss me off. At least the O's have stayed in the fray in the AL East, and continue to play decent ball. -- Al

My Phillies have done the complete opposite but I still don't think their pitching will hold up.

The A’s continue to get mountains of grief for their historically bad season.

Just yesterday ESPN and MLB Network pointed out how no one in the past million years has come close to their season low win total.

Oakland currently has 20 wins, Kansas City has 21.

lol!!!

Ok, ok, I have to finally concede, Ohtani is worth the hype. 30 Hr's in half a season, so far, and he's got 7 wins with 127 K's in 95 innings. He is good. There, I said it. Now my sons will be happy. -- Al

Happy Bobby Bonilla Day everyone, especially Mets and O's fans. Because of salary defferment payouts, Bonilla gets $1.2 million from the Mets every July 1 from 2011 through 2035. Also, he gets $500 grand yearly from the O's that started in 2004 and will end in 2029. AND that doesn't include his Social Security that kicks in a few years from now...:rolleyes2:. Now that's the way to retire properly. -- Al

Perhaps so, perhaps not. An in-depth analysis would look at what the dollars he receives today would be worth if he received them years ago - after compounded interest and or stock returns. Especially as $1.2 million today, after the effects of recent and ongoing raging inflation, is not worth near what it was “back then”. One might / should also consider what tax levels were then, now, and will be, as rising rates would possibly subject more of his income to higher taxes.

Besides, most likely the Mets bought an annuity contract for him at the time he signed his deferred contact. So in effect the Mets are no longer on the financial hook. While obviously such a deal ensures Mr. Day never runs out of money, per se, a proper analysis considers what those dollars back then would be worth today, assuming a reasonable compounding rate of return, taking into account taxes along the way, as well as the ability to use tax deferral or other tax minimization strategies.

Of course he’s surely better off now if he or other family / advisors were recognized as poor managers of his baseball income, and thus the deferred structure eliminated, basically, that risk.

“Also, Bonilla may have screwed himself a bit. According to Insider, if Bonilla had accepted the $5.9 million and invested it at 8%, it would have grown to $104.1 million by 2035. If he took each annual payment at an 8% investment, it would reach $95.2 million in 12 years – the current deal "only" has him netting just over $29 million.”

It’s not that big a deal; many athletes have deferred comp.

Al:

Great post.

Ohtani is a ridiculous talent.

He has such a great swing you almost forget he is a pitcher.

Best,
Jason

Beginning to wonder if Tampa is ever going to cool off long enough for the O's to make a run at them. O's have been 4 to 6 games back of Tampa most of the season. Just can't seem to gain on them. -- Al

Perhaps the AL Central should be declared a disaster area and eliminated from playoff consideration. It should be a requirement that a division winner must be at least over .500 or the playoff position goes to the next team that meets the criteria, regardless of division. -- Al

ESPN, MLB Network etc. have all decided that the current weekend series of the Braves vs. Rays is a World Series preview.

The Braves win in that scenario every time.

My two AL teams are the Red Sox from birth and the Oakland A's since about 1970, they have THE best uniforms in baseball, first team to wear white cleats, which were all the rage when I was in high school and college.

My two NL teams are the Giants from about 1970 and the Braves from about 1985 or so, they are originally from Boston.

I'm hoping for a Braves/Rangers world series, that would be great.

Better than this uniform? Nope.
