Mlb 2023 (2 Viewers)

Going into today's game, the Rays are 11-0, they are a top shelf organization that does a tremendous job of drafting top shelf players, developing them into MLB talent, then trading/ not signing them, they are a great talent feeder for the rest of MLB.

And they have as many championships as I do.

Their home attendance is embarrassing even by MLB standards. I don't know how most teams meet their outrageous payroll but the stands in Tampa are empty. It is like a tomb. If no one is buying tickets when they are winning, most likely no one is watching on TV or buying jerseys etc. So how do they afford the incredible salaries?

Phillies won 14-3 today but lost to same team yesterday 13-0, go figure. Every starter had 2 or more hits. Must be some kind of record.

They're 28th in MLB payroll, only the LET'S GO O'S!! and the AAA'S spend less.

Embarrassing.

My cousin sent me a pretty comical video; some guy is interviewing a Mets fan, he's all decked out in some really nice gear, nice cap and jersey, he's probably in his late 20's/early 30's, the guy asks him "What's the best part about being a Mets fan?"..........the guy says "Following this team builds character and teaches you life lessons".............then he asks "What's the worst part?" and he says "May through September"........

Classic; their ownership is not shy about spending money as they lead MLB in payroll, so the fans have to be happy that ownership wants to win.

Early season frontrunner for 'Hard-luck Pitcher O' the Year' goes to the Nats Josiah Gray. He lost to the O's tonight, 1-0, to make his record 0-4 with a 3.74 ERA. In his 4 starts, the Nats have scored 1 (one) run. His last 3 losses have been 1-0, 2-0, and 1-0. Hard to win a game when your team can't score... -- Al

This record of futility hardly compares with the 1968 season of HoFer Ferguson Jenkins, though. In 1968, Jenkins went 20-15 with a 2.63 ERA, spectacular numbers, but they should have been much better. He started 10 games in which his team, the Cubs, were shutout. He was 0-9 in those 10 starts, including an incredible 5 losses by a 1-0 score (not including a 1-0 loss where he got the ND). Eventually, Fergie lost a total 0f 13 1-0 games in his stellar career. So Gray has a ways to go, but he has a right smart start in this chase.:rolleyes2: -- Al

The stands at the Tigers game this week were completely empty. As in a post-apocalyptic disaster movie. Granted it was a cold, weekday game but unreal. Maybe 500 fans actually in the stands despite the inflated attendance figure. Cincy also set an all-time low attendance record this week. It's a business model that doesn't seem sustainable as salaries keep skyrocketing.

April can be a hard sell, especially if your team is doing poorly.

The Reds payroll is low, $65 MM but the Tigers a bit higher, $120MM.

Kind of a good news, bad news stat for the Nats. Nats have played 9 straight games decided by 2 or fewer runs. Good news is that the Nats have stayed close and been in every game until the last out. Bad news is, close only counts in horseshoes as the Nats have gone 3-6 in those games. At least they are being competitive.:redface2: -- Al

Sad day as Madison Bumgarner has been DFA'd by Arizona. It was obvious it was coming, as Bums hasn't been the same pitcher he was prior to 2017, and was only 15-32 with Arizona since signing that big contract in 2020. He was beaten up badly in his 4 starts this season. In his 8 seasons through 2016, he was 100-67, but was only 34-57 in the 7 seasons since. As a LHP, he may catch on for a final shot somewhere, or he may be done. Whatever, he was a huge post-season winner with the SF Giants during their glory years in 2010, 2012, and 2014. -- Al

Just a thought...Maybe Juan Soto should have taken that huge extension contract for $440 million that the Nats offered him. Based on his performance since he left the Nats, he won't come near getting those numbers at this point. -- Al

Love beating the DC teams any day!!! Al, keeping my excitement in check but I'm enjoying these young Orioles! They have some decent talent, young, brash, ( loved the water bong) 🤣🤣 way to early to get to excited but so far..so good

Sammy, just like last year. the O's are proving to be a very fun team to watch. They are running wild on the base paths, and players like Mateo, Hays, and Rutschman make for exciting games. If the SP solidifies, this will be a dangerous team every night. -- Al

Never a big fan of the Pirates but it's good to see them playing well.

That AL East is one tough division.
Mark

The Red Sox lost again today to the LET'S GO O'S!! to fall to 13-13, they are a 500 club in last place.

They'd be competitive in any other division, they can't help it if they are in the same division as the 1927 Yankees, also known as the Rays, who ironically have a lower payroll than the 1927 Yankees.

O's are off to an incredible (for them) start with a 16-8 record, yet they are only in 2nd place, a full 4 games back of the Rays, who play tonight and could add 1/2 game more to the lead. The AL East is brutal. O's would be in 1st place or tied for 1st place, in any other division in MLB. -- Al

I know it's still way too early to draw conclusions, but the glaring disparity between team salaries and team performance just kind of smacks you in the face. The top 6 payrolls in MLB, the Mets, NYY's, Padres, Phillies, Dodgers, and Angels, are all sputtering around with records close to .500 and none of them leading their divisions (only the Mets and Dodgers rank as high as 2nd place). Three division leaders, the Rays, Twins, and Pirates, all rank in the lower half of MLB payrolls, (Rays are 28th, Twins are 17th, Pirates are 27th), with the O's being in 2nd place and a payroll that ranks 29th. It's bizarro world in terms of pre-season predictions, up is down, day is night, and money spent means very little, to this point. Lots of other pre-season favs are off to really slow starts, like the Cards and White Sox, but as I said, it is really early. Teams will gel, injuries heal, and underperformers will find their stride, but current standings are just kind of shocking. -- Al

In the case of the Mets they didn’t really improve the offense. Adding Correa would have made a difference but that didn’t work out. The SP is sputtering as they lost three starters to injuries; Verlander is due back soon. Just when I think they should have re-signed Jake, he goes on the IL.
